Description and Sources Description House has a late 16th century east wing and a main block and west wing of the 17th century, making the plan H-shaped. The timber framing is mostly exposed. In the interior, there is an original moulded ceiling-beam in the east wing. (1) The farmhouse has a late 16th century east wing and a 17th century west wing and central block, refronted and remodelled in the mid 19th century. It is timber framed with part wattle-and-daub and part brick infill, brick refronting, sandstone plinth and stacks, and a slate roof. The building is broadly H-plan with east and west wings extending to the south and slightly to the north; the central block is aligned east-west, facing south. There is a lobby entry with a large central axial stack and two further lateral stacks to the east and west wings, plus later lean-to additions to the rear. The building has two storeys, with attic and cellar. The central block has a 20th century panelled door, partly obscured by a lean-to penticed porch extending between the wings. There are decorative 19th century barge boards to the gables. The framing of the wings is revealed at the rear of the west wing, with four panels from sill to tie beam with diagonal brace from sill to main post, two struts to collar and curved V- struts in gable. The east wing, partly obscured by a lean-to, possibly has close-studding above girding beam to tie-beam, three struts to collar, V-struts in gable. Both north gable struts have similar 19th century decorative barge boards. Interior not inspected. (2) Sources (1) Bibliographic reference: Royal Commission on Historical Monuments. 1932. SMR Number Site Name Record Type 16777 - MHE24064 Roman Town, Stretton Grandison Monument Roman settlement, possibly a small town, at Stretton Grandison.

Monument Types and Dates TOWN? (Roman - 43 AD to 409 AD) Evidence EXCAVATED FEATURE

Description and Sources Description A fort was constructed, probably in the middle of the 1st Century AD, on the slightly higher ground to the east of the military road from Gloucester where it crossed the River Frome and close to the junction with an east-west road possibly linking Worcester and Kenchester. A settlement developed on, or close to, the road junction to the east of the fort. It is not known when the settlement developed, nor when it was abandoned. The status of the settlement is unclear, but the settlement was provisionally classed as urban by the Central Marches Historic Towns Survey. The Roman name of the settlement is not known. There are no standing structures of Roman date, but the accidental discovery of buried remains in the 19th and 20th Centuries, and the survey undertaken by the Herefordshire Valleys Survey, have demonstrated that archaeological deposits of Roman date survive. The available evidence indicates that the Roman settlement at Stretton Grandison can be classified as a small Roman Town. The evidence from fieldwalking and salvage recording as well as the samples provided by augering suggest that survival of deposits varies over the area of the town. (1) More recent excavations within the area of the town during water pipeline works revealed significant archaeological remains dating to the Roman period. Description and Sources Description Dilapidated barn at Little Tuston, in area known as Wood End. Roofing slates have been removed - awaiting conversion? Possibly the property of Mr. Bradstock of Freetown, Tarrington. (1) The barn is of oak-framed construction on a sandstone plinth rising to a height of approximately 1.2m. The frame is constructed in four bays and the majority of panels are infilled in brick. The remainder are either open or close boarded with softwood boards. There is an extremely dilapidated lean-to structure to the east. It is constructed in two bays from oak posts and beams and is bordered out to the east in close butted oak boarding. None of the original roof covering has remained and the lower two thirds of each slope are bordered and counter battened. The upper third is battened and counter battened. There are two full-height ledged oak doors on strap hinges and one half door of similar construction. Internally, a floor has been inserted to the southernmost two bays. Description and Sources Description Lying 3/4 of a mile north of Ashperton church, on the opposite side of the Hereford and Gloucester Canal, Walsopthorne is a moated site. It is a gentry property, and was owned by the Pichards of Suckley in Worcestershire during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The moat is substantial, with an outer enclosure which may have held a garden. The timber-framed house was built c.1600. It is unclear whether Walsopthorne ever had a park. Description and Sources Description Begins at SO 66622 42790. 5-6m wide, drop off of 0.50m on the W side, 1m on the E. May be continuation of trackway HER 37948. Proceeds uphill. Continues to SO 66637 42856, where it appears more like a hollow way. Continues to SO 66624 42882, where hollow way ends at heavy undergrowth. Continues at SO 66607 42914 on the other side of the undergrowth. Runs on to SO 66593 42901, where it returns to quarry HSMR 37961. Continues at SO 66605 42774, where it curves, and then continues at SO 66598 42762, where it curves again. At SO 66616 42691 it curves again and goes over the two bridges HSMR 37957 and 37958. At SO 66617 42687 it appears like a metalled surface, 5-6m, with ditches on both sides, 1m wide by 0.20m deep. At SO 66605 42678 it follows the wood boundary. The trackway continues at SO 66539 42663, and meets a crossroads at SO 66528 42680. At SO 66502 42669 it is 4m wide; the drop off on the N side is 0.40m and the down-slope drop off is 0.20m. It continues at SO 66407 42611 and SO 66385 42608, and ends at SO 66388 42612 (platform HER 37967 and bridge HER 37968). At SO 66300 42585 (from bridge HER 37972 northwards) the track continues as a hollow way, 5m wide. It has an up-slope drop of 0.40m, and a slight bank on the down slope is 1m wide by 0.15m high. At SO 66376 42654, S of bridge 37972, the track is 5m wide with a down slope of 0.25m, and the N side drops 0.50m. At SO 66234 42564 the trackway extends to the S and at SO 66201 42533 it enters undergrowth. It continues at SO 66103 42391, where it is 4m wide with a N side drop of 0.40m. At SO 65848 42343 it joins a crossroads. S of dam HER 37972, the trackway is followed by the parish boundary between Munsley and Canon Frome. The boundary continues to follow the trackway as it turns to the W; it is suggested that at this point either the trackway has replaced the boundary bank or that the bank has been incorporated into the downslope bank of the trackway. Description and Sources Description An oval enclosure about 80m in diameter with two small pits and one large pit and a possibly entrance on the north side. (1) Clearly visible as cropmarks during July 2003. Chris Musson's 2003 colour slide aerial photograph catalogue (2) (3) An excavation was carried out at the site as part of the Frome Valley project in 2004. Rectification of the aerial photos showed that although the enclosure was curved on the northeastern side, the rest of the circuit comprised five straight sections of ditch. The aerial photo also showed possible pits or quarries, and indications of a smaller enclosure appended to the main enclosure. Three trenches were excavated across different arcs of the main enclosure ditch. The excavation established that the site represents an enclosed settlement of the Middle to Late Iron Age. The pottery recovered from the ditch fills indicated that the ditch was probably dug in the mid 1st Millennium BC, with subsequent infilling and re-cutting. There was also evidence for the former existence of an internal bank. At some stage, the eastern portion of the ditch was enlarged substantially, probably during the Mid-Late Iron Age. One of the internal pits was partially excavated in Trench 1, and would appear to be later than the ditch, although this could not be conclusively proved. Iron Age pottery, including Malvernian ware, was recovered from the ditch fills. Romano-British pottery was also recovered, but this was mostly a continuation of fabrics and forms of the local Later Iron Age, suggesting continuity of occupation at the site by the same family. The absence of Romanised pottery or forms dated beyond the Roman Conquest period suggests that this site was abandoned within a century after the Roman conquest. Monument Types and Dates FIELD SYSTEM (16th Century to 17th Century - 1501 AD to 1700 AD) Evidence CROPMARK Evidence EXCAVATED FEATURE

Description and Sources Description A series of rectangular enclosures about 1/10th ha each, showing on an aerial photograph by Chris Musson 2004 may represent small fields, probably Roman. (1) The cropmarks do not correspond to the field pattern shown on the tithe map. (2) Three trenches were excavated in the field in 2004 as part of the Frome Valley project, in order to investigate the cropmarks. Features were revealed in all three trenches, and the results, from both artefacts and from stratigraphic relationships, showed that the cropmarks represent a Late Medieval or Early Post-Medieval field system. The linear features appeared to form boundaries around agricultural fields, and cut across the lines of earlier Medieval Ridge and Furrow cultivation. Abraded glazed pottery and ironwork were recovered from the excavated features. The archaeological deposits had been severely damaged by recent subsoiling. The results of the excavation are significant because they show that the landscape must have been re-organised between the Late Medieval period and the production of the tithe map in the 1830s. Description and Sources Description Evidence of Prehistoric activity was found during the archaeological excavation of access pits during the construction of the Ledbury Trunk Main water pipeline. This consisted of two concentrations of worked wood fragments found at a considerable depth within Access Pits 2 and 5 (both pits measuring 9m x 8m), which appeared to represent the remains of wooden hurdles or panels, constructed of alder and oak, forming part of a larger structure, possibly a trackway over marshy ground, or a fishtrap/weir. None of the fragments were found in situ within a discernible feature. Radiocarbon dating of the wood fragments from AP5 indicated a Late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic origin for this particular structure. (1) Sources (1) Unpublished Report: Border Archaeology. 2009. Description and Sources Description Evidence of several phases of Roman and Post-Roman/Early Medieval settlement and burial activity was found during the archaeological excavation of a 9m x 8m access pit for the Ledbury trunk Main in 2007 (Access Pit 4). Features relating to the principal phase of occupation, dated to the 2nd to Early 4th Centuries AD, included the well-preserved remains of a stone-lined well shaft and a series of enclosure/drainage ditches, which may indicate the presence of a farmstead or villa complex in the immediate vicinity. The pottery assemblage included samian ware. Evidence for substantial grain-processing activity and a ceramic kiln further confirms the impression of a large, potentially high-status rural establishment. A series of adult and neonatal inhumation burials, and several cremation burials, appeared to be associated with these settlement features. Two of the burials were contained within wooden coffins, one of which survived in a remarkable state of preservation. Analysis of the skeletal remains from the latter coffin revealed that they represented a male aged over 46 years old, and radiocarbon dating yielded a date of AD 10-210. This coffin was, at the time, one of only three complete coffins of its age, form and function ever found in the UK. The random distribution of these burials, and their close proximity to the settlement features, suggests a localised, possibly familial grouping connected with a farmstead/villa rather than an extensive communal burial ground associated with a fully-fledged urban settlement. However, it is possible that there are more burials still to be discovered at the site. The evidence from Access Pit 4 suggests that there was a gradual decline in settlement activity from the Late 3rd-Early 4th Century onwards, following which there was a phase of low-level occupation and burial activity which extended from the Mid 4th Century through to the middle of the 7th Century. These later burials were clearly distinguishable from the earlier phase of burial activity, and included the prone burial of an adolescent, which showed evidence of having been violently assaulted and decapitated, and has been interpreted as a possible criminal or battle/murder victim. The radiocarbon dating and stratigraphic evidence indicate that this series of burials is likely to date from the Late Roman or Early Post-Roman period, i.e. later than c.340 AD and continuing up to c.550-650 AD. It remains unclear as to whether the later burials indicate a cemetery whose use extended into the Early Medieval period, or whether they indicate intrusive Early Medieval burials into a Roman cemetery. One possible interpretation for this later phase of burial is that it may represent a 'deviant burial ground' established on the fringes of a pre-existing cemetery site. Monument Types and Dates DEER PARK (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1539 AD) Evidence DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE

Description and Sources Description 1292: Will Grandison had licence to strengthen his house within a park. (1) (2) Earliest reference to park is in 1358, Public Record Office Calendar of Inquisitions Post Mortem X, 347, ownership Peter de Grandison. (3) From at least the 13th century, Ashperton belonged to the de Grandisons, a wealthy and powerful court family. Ashperton would therefore have been an important country residence with a setting to match. The site included an ample moat, below which is the site of a pool of some size, now called Church Coppice; these features indicate the grandeur of the house's setting. The park was probably a feature of the estate from the earliest times, and lies on the site of Ashperton Park Wood. During the 17th century it was owned by the Lingens of Stoke Edith; around 1655 it is described as being well-wooded but having no deer. The whole Stoke Edith estate was bought by Paul Foley in the 1670s. The park has been woodland since that time, and is mentioned at intervals in the Foley estate records.
