Lloyd: Faulkner Bibliography An Annotated Bibliography of William Faulkner, 1967—1970 by James Barlow Lloyd This annotated bibliography of books and articles published about William Faulkner and his works between January, 1967, and the summer of 1970 supplements such existing secondary bibliog raphies as Maurice Beebe’s checklists in the Autumn 1956 and Spring 1967 issues of Modern Fiction Studies; Linton R. Massey’s William Faulkner: “Man Working” 1919-1962: A Catalogue of the William Faulkner Collection of the University of Virginia (Charlottesville: Bibliographic Society of the University of Virginia, 1968); and O. B. Emerson’s unpublished doctoral dissertation, “William Faulkner’s Literary Reputation in America” (Vanderbilt University, 1962). The present bibliography begins where Beebe’s latest checklist leaves off, but no precise termination date can be established since publica tion dates for periodicals vary widely, and it has seemed more useful to cover all possible material than to set an arbitrary cutoff date. -
Art and Omnipotence: Genre Manipulation in Requiem for a Nun
ART AND OMNIPOTENCE: GENRE MANIPULATION IN REQUIEM FOR A NUN Requiem lor a Nun is usually classified as a novel. Yet it remains an irritating example of the genre, since it appears to defy even the loosest definition of a novel. Published in 1953, it consists of the three acts of a play called Requiem for a Nun, each of which is preceded by a long introduction see mingly unrelated to the action, if not the setting, of the play. Together, the introductions are about two-thirds as long as the play. If we consider that the text of a play, since it is not printed in continuous paragraphs, tends to take up more pages than narrative prose, we might actually end up with two Faulknerian texts of about equal length. Although Requiem lor a Nun has been produced as a play (most notably in 1956 at the Theatre des Mathurins under the direction of Albert Ca mus, who had also translated the text) the play cannot be truly understood if seen out of the context of the introductions. The story is a sequel to the events related in Sanctuary, published twenty years earlier in 1931, so that ideally even the play Re quiem lor a Nun requires a knowledge of the rest of the Faulk ner canon. Yet Temple Stevens, nee Drake, of Requiem for a Nun is no longer the Temple Drake of Sanctuary, nor is the Negress Nancy Mannigoe the Nancy of "That Evening Sun" (also published in 1931). Faulkner, although interested in the development of his characters, severs the ties between their 385 earlier and later versions because by the Fifties he had secretly become more interested in his own role as author. -

These are the Chroniques Algeriennes. l This is a facet of Camus seldom studied--the involvement in the race problem. Sometimes there is the feeling that Camus was not involved in one of the most basic problems of the world today. This problem lies astride the Jordan river, creates a ghetto of every American city, rents assunder the axis of one of the most monolithic political philosophies of history--the axis between China and Russia. This problem, too, tore into the very fabric of Camus' life. He was born; his formative years were spent in a festering sorespot of this problem, Algeria. Algeria! the land of the invincible summer,2 the one place where this problem should not be. -

Gura) Genre affords a theoretical and conceptual framework for knowledge production and knowledge distribution. Rhetorically, genre affords a political, artistic, and ideological tool that enables a rhetor to respond to personal and cultural anxieties. Geographies of the Mind: Narrative Spaces and Literary Landscapes in William Gilmore Simms’s Antebellum Fiction examines ten of nineteenth-century American author William Gilmore Simms’s works, including three manuscript-only ones. Drawing upon rhetorical theory and narrative theory, this project uncovers the breadth of Simms’s rhetorical and literary practices within the confession narrative, the ghost story, the pirate romance, and the sentimental novel. I demonstrate that Simms’s texts both adhere to and subvert the boundaries of generic conventions and, in doing so, elucidate legal, psychological, and transnational concerns of the time. By focusing on the narrative spaces of Simms’s texts, I prove that Simms’s geographic spaces reverberate with hauntings that serve to mark moments of intellectual, personal, and historical disconnect, thereby voicing the disjunctive nature of antebellum southern spaces. -

"But I found out afterward that not only each book had to have a design but the whole output or sum of an artist's work had to have a design." In the following pages I have sought to illuminate that larger design of Faulkner's art by placing the whole canon within successive frames of thought provided by various sources, influences, and affinities: Holy Writ, music, biopsychology, religion, Freud/Marx, William James. In the end, I hope these essays may thereby contribute toward revealing in Faulkner's work what Henry James, in "The Figure in the Carpet," spoke of as "the primal plan; some thing like a complex figure in a Persian carpet .... Review On a first reading of Requiem For A Nun can easily seem to be pretentious, portentous, almost formless, and erratic, a potpourri of observations, performances, local history, anecdotes, recollections, a court transcript, clemency appeals and jail visits. These prose segments are frequently presented in a stream of consciousness style. -

The Controversy over the Fate of N aney William Faulkner's "That Evening Sun" (1931) has been unanimously appreciated by critics, including 1rving Howe, who considers it Faulkner's best short story (53, 193); but the question of the fate of N ancy in "That Evening Sun," namely, whether she is ultimately murdered by her husband Jesus or not, provoked some initial controversy. N ancy, however, reappears in Requiem for a Nun, which Faulkner published in 1951, and Faulkner stated in 1957 that N ancy in "That Evening Sun" and N ancy in Requiem for a Nun are the very same person (Gwynn 79); and thus the critics reached the provisional conclusion that Nancy is not killed by Jesus (Zender 242). Nevertheless, some critics still claim that N ancy is murdered by Jesus; for example, Edmond V olpe argues in his book, published in 2004, that there is "sufficient evidence" for the theory that N ancy is murdered (288). Volpe claims that Jesus' killing Nancy is indicated by the word "tragedy" in a letter Faulkner wrote to H. L. :vIencken concerning Mencken's suggestions for revisions of "That Evening Sun": "I did not delete the section, the dialogue about pregnancy, altogether, because it seems to me that it establishes Judah [Jesus] as a potential factor of the tragedy as soon as possible."
