Playwright Brandt, who also directs Coded, took the opportunity to do some script tweaks, making the story even more current. The result is a resonant, hard-hitting and sometimes surprisingly funny story. Coded centers on Jerrie, who was on her way to being a leader in the gaming industry until a competitor armed with a legion of internet trolls launched an assault on her. Now, she’s back from hiding with a plan to revolutionize virtual- reality gaming. If she can keep the trolls at bay and control over her team, she might be able to dismantle the industry's boys' club. But when the virtual world begins to invade the real one, things get really surreal. Brandt is an interdisciplinary artist and educator. A director, playwright and producer, she specializes in musical and experimental theater, devised and ensemble-created events, Shakespeare, and the intersection of live performance and digital media. As associate artistic director of San Jose Rep, she directed Rabbit Hole, Groundswell, The Big Meal and many others. Other companies she has directed with include The Old Globe, TheatreWorks and Marin Theatre Company. She also wrote the rock musical The Snow Queen (continued on next page) (continued from previous page) (with Rick Lombardo & Haddon Kime), and her telematic play The Thinning Veil. • History and Background
History and Background Book by Lisa Kron, music by Jeanine Tesori Based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel SYNOPSIS Both refreshingly honest and wildly innovative, Fun Home is based on Vermont author Alison Bechdel’s acclaimed graphic memoir. As the show unfolds, meet Bechdel at three different life stages as she grows and grapples with her uniquely dysfunctional family, her sexuality, and her father’s secrets. ABOUT THE WRITERS LISA KRON was born and raised in Michigan. She is the daughter of Ann, a former community activist, and Walter, a German-born lawyer and Holocaust survivor. Kron spent much of her childhood feeling like an outsider because of her religion and sexuality. She attended Kalamazoo College before moving to New York in 1984, where she found success as both an actress and playwright. Many of Kron’s plays draw upon her childhood experiences. She earned early praise for her autobiographical plays 2.5 Minute Ride and 101 Humiliating Stories. In 1989, Kron co-founded the OBIE Award-winning theater company The Five Lesbian Brothers, a troupe that used humor to produce work from a feminist and lesbian perspective. Her play Well, which she both wrote and starred in, opened on Broadway in 2006. Kron was nominated for the Best Actress in a Play Tony Award for her work. JEANINE TESORI is the most honored female composer in musical theatre history. Upon receiving her degree in music from Barnard College, she worked as a musical theatre conductor before venturing into the art of composing in her 30s. She made her Broadway debut in 1995 when she composed the dance music for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and found her first major success with the off- Broadway musical Violet (Obie Award, Lucille Lortel Award), which was later produced on Broadway in 2014.

(Craig Schwartz) Lucas Hnath, part of a bumper crop of playwrights rethinking the parameters of American drama, has written a play about his mother that is rife with contradictions. “Dana H.,” which is having its world premiere at the Kirk Douglas Theatre while Hnath’s “Hillary and Clinton” is on Broadway and his wildly successful “A Doll’s House, Part 2” is being produced across the nation, is composed from interviews yet is stranger than most fiction. Hnath uses not only his mother’s actual words but also her recorded voice, yet her character remains elusive. ADVERTISEMENT But the most curious incongruity is the one that makes me want to see this fascinating 75-minute play a second time: It’s impossible to sort out fact from falsehood in Dana’s story, yet by the end a truth as profound as it is slippery is revealed. “Dana H.” tells a story of trauma, terror and the way victimization continues even after the threat of violence has subsided.

Brilliantly thought-provokingBy Jessie BaldingerIf you like allegorical personal struggles that act as a microcosm for hugely difficult issues facing our country and the world, you'll love this play. The dialogue is always gripping, and there are a lot of funny moments. Every character is completely rounded, and they each have a point of view that is perfectly and realistically in line with with who they are. It is worth reading a bit about Kron's intentions before actually reading the play. All in all, this play is a an incredibly well-thought-out, brilliant, and unsettling commentary on the way we (Americans) view ourselves and our country.0 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Narcissism masquerading as courage.By Christopher B. ConnellyThis play embodies everything that is wrong with American drama. once again the focus is the problems of rich white people and how they suffer. Politics, human rights, race, class are used as brain candy but the focus is always on how difficult romantic/family relationships are.

  • Lesbian Suicide Musical"
The Journal of American Drama and Theatre (JADT) https://jadt.commons.gc.cuny.edu Branding Bechdel’s Fun Home: Activism and the Advertising of a "Lesbian Suicide Musical" by Maureen McDonnell The Journal of American Drama and Theatre Volume 31, Number 2 (Winter 2019) ISNN 2376-4236 ©2019 by Martin E. Segal Theatre Center Alison Bechdel offered a complicated and compelling memoir in her graphic novel Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic (2006), adapted by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori into the Broadway musical Fun Home (2015). Both works presented an adult Bechdel reflecting on her father’s troubled life as a closeted gay man and his possible death by suicide. As Bechdel herself noted, “it’s not like a happy story, it’s not something that you would celebrate or be proud of.”[1] Bechdel’s coining of “tragicomic” as her book’s genre highlights its fraught narrative and its visual format indebted to “comics” rather than to comedy. Bechdel’s bleak overview of her father’s life and death served as a backdrop for a production that posited truthfulness as life-affirming and as a means of survival. Fun Home’s marketers, however, imagined that being forthright about the production’s contents and its masculine lesbian protagonist would threaten the show’s entertainment and economic potential. It was noted before the show opened that “the promotional text for the show downplays the queer aspects,” a restriction that was by design.[2] According to Tom Greenwald, Fun Home’s chief marketing strategist and the production’s strategy officer, the main advertising objective was to “make sure that it’s never ever associated specifically with the ‘plot or subject matter.’” Instead, the marketing team decided to frame the musical as a relatable story of a family “like yours.” [3] The marketers assumed that would-be playgoers would be uninterested in this tragic hero/ine if her sexuality were known.

Anything beyond the shores of Manhattan is designated, sometimes with condescension, “regional theater.” Lesbian and gay drama maps onto this topography. The history of scripted live performances by or about lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people in New York City is the history of a vexed relationship with Broadway, the mainstream visibility it offers, and the politics and aesthetics it polices. Broadway is an object of desire, a longed-for sign of success that can seduce theater practitioners toward conservative aesthetics and poli- tics, away from radical experimentation and social engagement. Broadway spotlights a few extraordinarily talented queer playwrights – often but not always white gay men – while routinely eclipsing equally brilliant people of color, white lesbians, and feminists of all stripes.

An unusual initiative for Lisa Kron, whose career has grown through one-woman shows and her participation in the Five Lesbian Brothers collective, this Brechtian creation stems from the personal and extends onto the political, using (auto)biography to discuss issues of bodily and social health while questioning the boundaries between author and character, character and actor, character/actor and audience. Through an interdisciplinary approach that activates concepts from Gender, Theater, and Performance Studies, this article intends to prove that autobiographical feminist performance is a living form, constantly updated and refreshed by committed artists; and that performed life stories contain a great potential for efficacy in the narrative of, and consciousness-raising about, issues of health and sickness in the 21st century.
