For a second-straight season, a Baylor student-athlete was awarded Big 12 Player of the Year. NaLyssa Smith is the ninth Lady Bear to earn that distinction and the third in the last four seasons. The junior is averaging 17.2 points (9th in Big 12) and 9.2 rebounds per game (4th in Big 12), which both rank in the top-10 in the Big 12. A native of Converse Texas, Smith has recorded nine double- doubles and is second in the Conference with a 53.3 field goal percentage. Smith is one of 11 semifinalists for the Naismith Trophy, a finalist for the Katrina McClain Award and on the national ballot for the Wooden Award. Oklahoma State’s Natasha Mack joins Brittney Martin (2016) as one of just two Cowgirls to win Defensive Player of the Year honors. Baylor’s Lauren Cox brings home the eighth Big 12 Player of the Year honor for the Lady Bears and the first since Kalani Brown in 2018. The senior from Flower Mound, Texas, averaged 12.5 points and 8.4 rebounds in 22 games, missing eight games due to injury. Cox has amassed 1,570 points, 982 rebounds, 363 assists and 301 blocks during her four-year career. BU’s DiDi Richards garnered Defensive Player of the Year honors for the first time and became the ninth winner from Baylor since the award began in 2006. Richards’ teammate Lauren Cox had previously won the award the past two seasons. Richards is fourth nationally and paces the Big 12 with a 3.02 assist-to-turnover ratio. Additionally, she is 10th in the Big 12 with 1.73 steals per game and 15th with 0.83 blocks per contest. For a third-consecutive year and eighth time overall, BU’s Mulkey was selected as Coach of the Year. Mulkey guided the Lady Bears to a 28-2 regular-season record and a 17-1 mark in Conference action.
