To Hell with Happy Endings! an Anti-School Manifesto
Volume 16 | Issue 18 | Number 2 | Article ID 5199 | Sep 15, 2018 The Asia-Pacific Journal | Japan Focus To Hell with Happy Endings! An Anti-School Manifesto Tsuneno Yujiro (Translation by Akira Kohbara) with an Introduction by Kido Rie In an interview held in August 2017, Tsuneno believe that? Aleksandra Klimowicz 1
Aleksandra Klimowicz 1 The Portrayal of Race, Sexuality and Gender in Happy Endings Although America has one of the most racially and ethnically diverse populations in the world, Caucasians make up its majority. Due to this and socio-political hegemony positions of power are generally assigned to white males. This notion was challenged most recently by the Obama administration and over the years members of minorities have witnessed dramatic improvement in this area, but many people still struggle for respect and perhaps more importantly, for rights. Part of the problem is the representation of minorities on TV and in cinema, as it is not representative of reality. “Media, especially television, continue to stereotype both majority and minority by means of some thought-provoking contrast” (Downing). America’s proud identification with the melting pot is not effectively displayed within the narrow paradigms of Hollywood and television. Much like positions of power, leading roles are assigned to white males and many characters that represent minorities are merely stereotypical caricatures of real people. While topics of gender and race are no longer the same taboo they once were, considering today’s media landscape the inclusion of a gay character is nothing short of a political statement (Tommy). The following paper will examine the manifestation of race, gender, sexuality and their intersections in the ABC sitcom, Happy Endings, and how it relates to the relations of power within society. Happy Endings is an ABC sitcom that ran from April 2011 to May 2013, and it was “the funniest Friends-rip-off-inspired comedy since Ross and Rachel got married” (Surette). -
In Defense of Happy Endings, Or, Where Lies the Trap of Never
Abstract: The prevailing form in popular culture has for some time C R been TV-series. The question is why, at a certain historical moment, I we are witnessing works of fiction that renounce their own ending. In S In Defense of Happy I this context, one has to take a closer look at film as the narrative with a S closure, and especially at the Hollywood happy endings. This production standard was never respected as it was considered artificial, unrealistic, & and ideological. However, one can argue that happy endings are more Endings, or, Where C ambiguous and have far more interesting implications. Serial logic, on R the other hand, has crept into all the pores of contemporary popular I culture: it is imposed on the film industry with franchises and it dictates T I Lies the Trap of consumption of video content today, known as binge-watching; especially Q with the rise of streaming services such as Netflix. This new attitude U toward fictional ending demands also an analysis of the current political E Never-Ending Stories context which is characterized by the end of endings. / Volume 7.2 / Keywords: TV-series, happy end, the end of endings, Netflix, Casablanca, Issue 2 Game of Thrones, Handmaid’s Tale It seems obvious that we live in an age of series. We call them TV-series although the mode of producing, distributing, and watching them has far less to do with television than with the so-called digital revolution. Jela Krecic However, what is really interesting about this dominating cultural form is its logic of endlessly prolonged narrative; of limitless continuation.1 Moreover, it seems the logic of series is not bound only to popular culture and entertainment business but goes hand in hand with our current political predicament. -
