NASA Measures Southwestern US Record Rainfall NASA measures southwestern U.S. record rainfall 22 July 2015, by Hal Pierce an extra impact in bone dry areas of California. Rainfall totals were estimated by IMERG to be over 268 mm (about 10.6 inches) in some areas of California. This rainfall may provide some drought relief to the state of California that has been in the grip of exceptional drought conditions. Heavy flooding caused an interstate 10 bridge collapse on Sunday July 19, 2015 forcing closure of this main roadway between Southern California and Phoenix, Arizona. Rainfall totals were estimated by IMERG to be over 268 mm (about 10.6 inches) in some areas of California. Provided by NASA Credit: NASA/JAXA/SSAI, Hal Pierce Moisture pumping into southern California and the Desert Southwest from the remnants of hurricane Delores has caused record July rainfall. Data from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission core observatory was used to estimate the rainfall. Dolores formed over the weekend of July 11 and 12 about 175 miles (275 km) south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. The storm moved north- northwest and on July 17, moisture associated with the storm began streaming to the northeast over Baja California, mainland Mexico and southern Arizona. As the storm continued moving to the north-northwest over the open waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean, that stream of moisture moved north over southern California and Arizona. Data from NASA's Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) were used to estimate the extreme amount of rain that fell from the remnants of former Hurricane Dolores. This analysis included data collected from July 13 to July 20, 2015. Hurricane Dolores, currently spinning well off west coast of Baja California, will continue to move NW as it slowly weakens into Sunday. Beginning today, a significant tropical moisture plume will surge northward out of the Gulf of California and Sonora, MX into Arizona. Current area dewpoints are running in the upper 50s to low 60s with precipitable water running around 1.50”. These values are expected rise further later this evening into Saturday as moisture pools across the southern half of the state. Daytime heating and forcing from a remnant MCV moving across the region will likely lead to the development of scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon/evening across southcentral AZ. Subsequent waves of activity will then be possible during the overnight hours and again on Saturday from local triggers and an unstable air mass. Given the amount of moisture in place, any stronger storms that develop will be very efficient rain makers capable of heavy rainfall rates upwards of 1.00”-2.00”/hour. South/southwesterly steering flow may also aid in storm training and orographic enhancement as storms move north/northeast into the higher terrain regions of Maricopa County.

Our objective was to determine how regional monsoonal patterns influence mountain precipitation near the NAM northwest boundary. Among the data we analyzed, a unique opportunity was provided by hourly observations collected on the Sheep Range (2300 m asl), in the Mojave Desert of southern Nevada, during 2011–2017. Long-term 800-m Parameter-elevation Relationships on Independent Slopes Model (PRISM) precipitation time series showed that the site is representative of mountain areas in the NAM northwest region. Based on in situ observations, we divided the water year into three seasons: cool (1 October through 31 March), early warm (1 April through last day with dewpoint <9.4 ◦C), and late warm (first day with dewpoint 9.4 C through 30 September). Dewpoint temperature differed by about 8 C between early warm ≥ ◦ ◦ season (mean of 6.3 C) and late warm season (mean of 2.3 C). According to ANCOVA model − ◦ ◦ results, increasing hourly dewpoint associated with afternoon thunderstorms in the late warm season had the greatest relationship with hourly precipitation (F-value = 237.8, p-value < 0.01).

    Minnesota WeatherTalk January-December 2015 Cold start to January Minnesota WeatherTalk, January 09, 2015 By Mark Seeley, University of Minnesota Extension Climatologist After a mild December (11th warmest since 1895 on a statewide basis), the other shoe dropped over the first full week of January, with temperatures averaging from 7 to 10 degrees F colder than average through the first seven days of the month, somewhat analogous to the start of January last year. Brimson (St Louis County) reported the coldest temperature in the nation on January 4th with -28F and on January 5th Togo (Itasca County) reported the coldest in the nation at -29F. In fact over the first week of the month a few records were set: • New low temperature records included: -28F at Thief River Falls on January 4th; and -28F at Grand Portage on January 5th • New cold maximum temperature records include: -7F at both Grand Marais and Grand Portage on January 5th; and -8F at Wright (Carlton County) also on January 5th • In addition a new daily precipitation record was set for January 3rd at International Falls with 0.58 inches (associated with 7.8" of snow) At least 45 Minnesota climate stations reported low temperatures of -20F or colder this week. The core of the cold air occurred over January 4-5 this week under high pressure. As a measure of the strength of the air mass, some climate stations reported extremely cold daytime highs. Temperatures rose no higher than -15F at Isabella and Kabetogama, and no higher than -16F at Sandy Lake Dam and Ely.
