Measure 5 (2019) Management Plan for Antarctic Specially Protected Area No 151 Lions Rump, King George Island, South Shetland Islands Introduction Lions Rump (62º08’S; 58º07’W) is located on the southwestern coast of King George Island, South Shetland Islands, covering approximately 1.32 km2 in area. The Area takes its name from the distinctive rocky hill lying between the southern extremity of King George Bay and Lions Cove. The Area was originally designated as Site of Special Scientific Interest No 34 through Recommendation XVI-2 (1991, SSSI No 34) after a proposal by Poland on the grounds that it contains diverse biota and geological features and is a representative example of the terrestrial, limnological, and littoral habitats of the maritime Antarctic. The Area was designated primarily to protect its ecological values. It is also valuable as a reference site with diverse avian and mammalian Antarctic fauna, against which disturbance at sites situated near locations of human activity can be measured. A revised Management Plan was adopted in Measure 1 (2000). The site was re-designated ASPA No 151 in Decision 1 (2002). A second revised Management Plan was adopted in Measure 11 (2013). Based on the Environmental Domains Analysis for Antarctica (Resolution 3 (2008)) ASPA No 151 lies within Environment A (Antarctic Peninsula northern geologic), which is a small, terrestrial environment around the northern Antarctic Peninsula consisting entirely of ice-free land cover and sedimentary geology (Morgan et al. 2007). Other protected areas containing Domain A include ASPA No 111, ASPA No 128 and ASMA No 1 (Morgan et al. -

POLISH POLAR RESEARCH 13 3-4 273-302 1992 List of place-names in Antarctica introduced by Poland in 1978-1990 The place-names listed here in alphabetical order, have been introduced to the areas of King George Island and parts of Nelson Island (West Antarctica), and the surroundings of A. B. Dobrowolski Station at Bunger Hills (East Antarctica) as the result of Polish activities in these regions during the period of 1977-1990. The place-names connected with the activities of the Polish H. Arctowski Station have been* published by Birkenmajer (1980, 1984) and Tokarski (1981). Some of them were used on the Polish maps: 1:50,000 Admiralty Bay and 1:5,000 Lions Rump. The sheet reference is to the maps 1:200,000 scale, British Antarctic Territory, South Shetland Islands, published in 1968: King George Island (sheet W 62 58) and Bridgeman Island (Sheet W 62 56). The place-names connected with the activities of the Polish A. B. Dobrowolski Station have been published by Battke (1985) and used on the map 1:5,000 Antarctic Territory — Bunger Oasis. In addition, the potential application of certain parameters obtained from the GSD analysis for the assessment of the formation stage of both creeks is comprehensively discussed. To achieve these goals, River Bedload Traps (RBTs) were used to collect the bedload, and a sieving method for dry material was applied to obtain the GSDs. Statistical comparisons between both streams showed significant differences in flow velocity; however, the lack of significant differences in bedload transport clearly indicated that meteorological conditions are among the most important factors in the erosive process for this catchment. In particular, the instability of flow conditions during high water discharge resulted in an increase in the proportion of medium and coarse gravels. The poorly sorted fine and very fine gravels observed in Siodło Creek suggest that this trough is more susceptible to erosion and less stabilized than Fosa Creek. The results suggest that GSD analyses can be used to define the stage of development of riverbeds relative to that of other riverbeds in polar regions. -

Szafer Institute of Botany Institute of Botany Polish Academy of Sciences Lubicz 46 31-512 Kraków, POLAND On the age of fossil flora from Barton Peninsula, King George Island, West Antarctica ABSTRACT: Three tectonic units occur in folded stratified volcanic sequence on Barton Peninsula. Fossil flora (Del Valle et al. 1984) occurs in the basal part of the upper unit which age is not younger than Paleocene. The rocks of the middle and lower units are older, possibly Mesozoie. Key words: Antarctica, paleobotany, stratigraphy. Introduction Fossil flora has been recently reported (Del Valle et al. 1984) from Barton Peninsula, King George Island. The site has been re-examined in 1986, in the course of structural research undertaken on the peninsula (Tokarski in press). A small collection of fragmentary deciduous leaf impressions have been collected. This collection, designated as collection no. 173/739—752, is housed at the Department of Paleobotany, W. Szafer Institute of Botany, Polish Academy of Sciences, Kraków, Poland. Regional setting King George Island (Fig. 1) consists largely of stratified volcanic rocks. This volcanic sequence, except for its uppermost part, is calc-alkaline and belongs to volcanic arc related to Mesozoic-Cenozoic eastward subduction 294 А. К. Tokarski, W. Danowski and E. Zastawniak of ancient Pacific ocean crust, which ceased about 4 Ma ago (Barker 1982). According to Birkenmajer (1983), the backbone of the island is formed by the Barton Horst (Fig. -

The Area takes its name from the distinctive rocky hill lying between the southern extremity of King George Bay and Lions Cove. The Area was originally designated as Site of Special Scientific Interest No. 34 through Recommendation XVI-2 (1991, SSSI No. 34) after a proposal by Poland on the grounds that it contains diverse biota and geological features and is a representative example of the terrestrial, limnological, and littoral habitats of the maritime Antarctic. In accordance with Decision 1 (2002), the Area was redesignated as Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA 151). A revised Management Plan was adopted through Measure 1 (2000). The Area was designated primarily to protect the site's ecological values. The Area is also valuable as a reference site with diverse avian and mammalian Antarctic fauna, against which disturbance at sites situated near sites of human activity can be measured. PREFACE The first Poles to study Antarctica were HENRYK ARCTOWSKI and ANTONI BOLESLAW DOBROWOLSKI, who tookpart in ADRIAN de GERLACHE de GoMERY'S Belgian Expedition to West Antarctica in the years 1897-1899 on the ship S. Y. Belgica. They conducted geological, glaciological, meteorological and oceanographical studies (ARCTOWSKI 1901 a, b; DOBRD WOLSKI 1914, 1923). ARCTOWSKI also made interesting collections of Jurassic volcanic and Tertiary intrusive rocks from the Danco Coast (Antarctic Peninsula) see ADm (1964), EBERT (1980). In 1977 a permanent Polish Antarctic Station of the Polish Academy of Sciences was found ed at Admiralty Bay, King George Island (fig. 1), see also RAKUSA-SUSZCZEWSKI (1979). The station, named in honour of HENRYK ARCTOWSKI, provided facilities for geological -paleontological studies on the South Shetland Islands archipelago and the Antarctic Penin sula. During four successive Polish Antarctic Expeditions of the Polish Academy of Sciences to the Arctowski Station, which were organized in the years 1977-1981 by the Institute of Ecology of the Academy, groups of geoscientists led by Professor KRZYSZTOF BIRKENMAJER carried out geological mapping and studies in paleontology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, mineralogy, tectonics, Quaternary geology and mineral resources (see BIRKENMAJER 1983 for review). The studies were conducted within Interdisciplinary Projects MR. 11. 16 (in the years 1976-1980) and MR. I. 29 (in the years 1981-1985). Paleontologists of the Institute of Paleobiology of the Polish Academy of Sciences parti cipated in these studies by carrying out field work on King George Island and the Antarctic Peninsula (Hope Bay and Arctowski Peninsula) during austral summers 1978-1979, 1980 1981, and 1985-1986 (see Bl.ASZYK and GAZDZICKI 1980, GAZDZICKI and WRONA 1982a, b; 1986). -

[email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT – Imbricate-leaved podocarps (Dacrydium s.l.) are the dominant conifer remains in the Upper Cretaceous and Cenozoic successions of King George Island, increasing its abundance in the post-Late Paleocene strata and maintained until the Early Oligocene times, with poor taphoflora registered in the last. However, a more precise taxonomic relationship of their remains was ever difficult given the fragmentary nature of the fossils and most known from ex situ material. In new field works and collections looking for the original levels, the recent phylogenetic approaches proposed and comparisons with extant floras have been applied to these fossils, and have helped to clarify their taxonomic status and their preferable association with the Upper Paleocene-Lower Eocene levels. The two kinds of foliage discussed here initiated the taxonomic revision of the Podocarpaceae related fossils on the island and attest to a modern affinity with Dacrydium vel Halocarpus and Dacrycarpus, which was in part proposed by previous works. Those genera comprise today an important component of the eastern Southern Hemisphere forests, and their occurrence in the Antarctic Peninsula areas during the Paleogene supports a broader distribution in the past and attests to the importance of the ancient Antarctic coastal areas in the modern distribution of the Podocarpaceae. -
