Eliot Mistah Kurtz The Hollow Man he dead. A penny for the Old Guy. I We are the hollow men We are the stuffed men Leaning together Headpiece filled with straw. Our dried voices, when We whisper together Are quiet and meaningless As wind in dry grass Or rats' feet over broken glass In our dry cellar Shape without form, shade without colour, Paralysed force, gesture without motion; Those who have crossed With direct eyes, to death's other Kingdom Remember us -- if at all -- not as lost Violent souls, but only As the hollow men The stuffed men. II Eyes I dare not meet in The Hollow Man In death's dream kingdom These do not appear: There, the eyes are Sunlight on a broken column There, is a tree swinging And voices are In the wind's singing More distant and more solemn Than a The Hollow Man star. Let me be no nearer In death's dream kingdom Let me also wear Such deliberate disguises Rat's coat, crowskin, crossed staves In a field Behaving as the wind behaves No nearer -- Not that final meeting In the twilight kingdom III This is the dead land This is cactus land Here the stone images Are raised, here they receive The supplication of a dead man's hand Under the twinkle of a fading star. Is it like this In death's other kingdom Waking alone At the hour when we are The Hollow Man with tenderness Lips that would kiss Form prayers to broken stone. IV The eyes are not here There are no The Hollow Man here In this valley of dying stars In this hollow valley This broken jaw of our lost kingdoms In this last of meeting places We grope together And avoid speech Gathered on this beach of the tumid river Sightless, unless The eyes reappear As the The Hollow Man star Multifoliate rose Of death's twilight kingdom The hope only Of empty men. V Here we go round the prickly pear Prickly pear prickly pear Here we go round the prickly pear At five o'clock in the morning. Eliot Mistah Kurtz -- he dead. The Hollow Men - Wikipedia Wells ' novel The Invisible Man. Bacon portrays the title character, a scientist who volunteers to be the first human test subject The Hollow Man an invisibility serum. When his fellow scientists are unable to restore him back to normal, he eventually becomes violently insane and goes on a killing spree. A direct-to-video stand-alone sequel called Hollow Man 2starring Christian Slater and Peter Facinelliwas released in Arrogant scientist Sebastian Caine has developed a serum for the military that can make a subject invisible. The team succeeds in reversing the procedure, returning an invisible gorilla to visibility. Sebastian becomes infatuated with Linda again but, unbeknownst to him, she has become involved with Matt. Instead of reporting his success to the military, Sebastian The Hollow Man to an oversight committee which includes his mentor Howard Kramer, telling them he is close but needs more time. He convinces part of the team to go right into human testing without military authorization, keeping the rest in the dark. The procedure is successful and Sebastian turns completely invisible. He enjoys sneaking around the lab in order to scare and play pranks on his fellow co-workers, including molesting Sarah. The The Hollow Man becomes concerned that Sebastian is taking The Hollow Man too far. The procedure to return him to visibility fails, and he is almost killed. Sebastian is quarantined in the laboratory due to his condition and the other researchers construct a latex mask for him to wear around the lab. Unable to cope with the isolation, he defies instructions and leaves the building. After he drives to his apartment to retrieve some lab supplies, he notices a female neighbor undressing and violently rapes her inside her apartment. Linda warns Sebastian that if he leaves again, she and Matt will tell the committee about the experiment. Ignoring their threat, Sebastian assembles a device that runs a video loop of his heat signature in his quarters. He leaves the lab again and spies on Linda and Matt, becoming enraged when he sees them about to have sex. Sebastian, becoming increasingly unstable, also kills a dog being used as a lab animal in a fit of rage. The team discovers that they have been watching a recording and that Sebastian has been leaving the lab without their knowledge. Linda and Matt go to Kramer's house and confess all. After they leave, Kramer attempts to alert the Army, but Sebastian, who followed Linda and Matt to the house, kills him. The next day, Sebastian waits until the whole team is inside the lab before he The Hollow Man the phones and the elevator codes except for his own. He begins to murder team members one by one, with Janice being his first victim. Linda and the others hide in the lab, while Matt and Carter take tranquilizer guns to hunt for Sebastian using thermal imaging goggles. Sebastian mortally wounds Carter before getting into a fight with Matt. Linda saves Matt. Sebastian then kills Sarah and Frank, and locks an injured The Hollow Man and Linda in the freezer, leaving them to die. Linda constructs an electromagnet using a defibrillator to open the door, then gathers materials to assemble a flamethrower. Meanwhile, Sebastian builds a makeshift bomb that will destroy the facility after he leaves. Just as Sebastian enters the elevator, Linda fires the flamethrower at him. Sebastian The Hollow Man and the two fight. Before The Hollow Man can kill Linda, Matt strikes him with a crowbar. Sebastian recovers and approaches Matt and Linda from behind with the crowbar but Matt deflects the blow, throwing Sebastian into a nearby circuit box, electrocuting him and rendering him partially visible. Linda and Matt find the bomb, but cannot stop it. They attempt to climb a ladder in the elevator shaft to escape as the bomb explodes. Sebastian, despite his injuries, grabs Linda's ankle. He pulls her off the ladder and onto the top of the elevator. Linda disconnects the elevator cables, causing Sebastian to fall to his death down the shaft. Linda and Matt emerge from the burning lab and emergency personnel take them away in an ambulance. The Hollow Man the time of Hollow Man 's release, Bacon recounted a "bad morning" on which, among other mishaps, he read a story in the press that suggested Robert Downey, Jr. Following the multi-layered and controversial Starship TroopersVerhoeven wanted to tone down the levels of sex and violence in his next film, aiming to make a more "conventionally commercial blockbuster". The film was shot in chronological order, partially due to the fact that the laboratory set would be physically blown up near the end of the story, a sequence that was captured by 14 cameras at various angles. Hollow Man was one of very few films allowed to shoot directly in front of The Pentagon building, with Verhoeven expressing surprise that the script was approved, because of the themes of the United States Government commissioning scientific The Hollow Man into making living beings invisible. A thermal imaging camera was employed The Hollow Man scenes showing "invisible" animals most notably Isabelle the gorilla or Sebastian following his transformation and the unsuccessful attempt to restore him to visibility; the same technique was used for characters when they look through thermal goggles. Despite assumptions that Bacon would not be needed on set except when his character Sebastian is visible, Verhoeven and the crew realized after test footage was shot that he would need to be present to interact with the cast, as "the other actors were stranded in empty space, and the scenes looked stiff, inorganic and unconvincing" without him. To achieve the effects of Sebastian being invisible, Bacon was digitally removed from the footage and each scene was shot twice: once with the actors and once without, for the background to be able to be seen through Sebastian's body. The scene of an invisible Sebastian raping a woman in a neighboring apartment was shot in two versions, with the second showing her The Hollow Man as she is raped. The first was used when preview audiences reacted The Hollow Man disdain, deeming it "painful" and feeling it alienated them from Sebastian too early. Professor of film and literature at California Polytechnic State University Douglas Keesey wrote in his illustrated book on the life and films of Verhoeven that the camera often adopts Sebastian's point The Hollow Man view, "tempting us to become voyeurs along with The Hollow Man, to get off on our ability to see without being seen". At what point do you abandon him? I'm thinking when he rapes the woman would probably be the moment that people decide, 'This is not exactly my type of hero', though I must say a lot of viewers follow him further than you would expect. The site's critics consensus states: "Despite awesome special effects, Hollow Man falls short of other The Hollow Man directed by Paul Verhoeven. This flick over time degenerates into a typical horror film. While some critics criticized the plot and acting, with some claiming it contains hallmarks of slasher films [19] and misogynistic undertones, [20] most critics praised the visual effects employed on making Kevin Bacon invisible, which earned the film a nomination at the Academy Awards.

Symbolic Power and Religious Impotence in Paul Verhoeven's Spetters Abstract This article explores the religious symbolism in the Dutch film Spetters (1980), by controversial director Paul Verhoeven. An examination of the symbolic referents in the film, in particular the use of stereotypical male power symbols, shows how expectations of power dynamics are reversed in the lives of the main characters. The film's embedded message, played out in Verhoeven's later films, concerns the impotence of Christianity in the modern world. Questions concerning theodicy are not satisfactorily answered through traditional religious ideas. God, it seems, has abandoned the human race. • Bill Wrobel's DVD Collection, Review & Music Analysis
Bill Wrobel’s DVD Collection, Review & Music Analysis A man is often known by the company he keeps. I suppose this applies not only to people routinely around him but also to the specific kinds of music and dvds he purchases as a personal collection to enjoy. As John Burroughs wrote in his poem, Waiting : “My own shall come to me.” This is the law of attraction (like attracts like). Now: Food for the soul to me includes music. Music for most people is obviously a pleasure, refined or not, ridiculous or sublime. Music can calm ones nerves in the stresses of life; reminds you of the heavenly; reminds you of beauty while sometimes involved in the ugliness or drudgery of daily life; helps you feel better when life gets you down, and restores harmony and peace (if only temporarily). I happen to love Golden Age and Silver Age music (music that I grew up with), and of course this includes Romantic era classical music especially (Tchaikovsky, Delibes, Wagner, etc.). As most people who read my site already know, my top favorite film composers are Bernard Herrmann and Max Steiner. Then I like Jerry Goldsmith in most cases, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Tiomkin, John Barry, and so forth. So obviously I will buy dvds (and cds) that contain their music. I tend to buy more dvds than cds because the music was intended to be paired with the images on the screen. I enjoy both mediums but music married with film is the best or most effective expression since it was meant for that particular art medium.

  • Beau Travail
Beau Travail Dir: Claire Denis, 1999 A review by Dayna Oscherwitz, The University of Texas at Austin, USA Beau Travail, French director Claire Denis's ninth film, is perhaps her most poetic and her most enigmatic. The story of French legionnaires in the east African enclave of Djibouti, the film is inspired by Herman Melville's 1891 novella, Billy Budd, a fact made evident by similarities in plot and by the inclusion of music from Benjamin Britten's opera of the same name. Told in flashback, the film recounts the experiences of one Sergeant Galoup (Michel Subor), a former legionnaire living in Marseille, and his encounter with the mysterious Sentain (Grégoire Colin), who plays the incarnation of the Billy Budd character in the film. Caught between the two men in Denis' version is the commander of the legionnaires post, Forrestier (Denis Lavant). It is Forrestier who provides the source of much of the tension between Galoup and Sentain in the film, as Galoup feels himself to be replaced in the commander's graces by the young, handsome Sentain. Melville's Billy Budd is the story of a young seaman, embodying good, who is falsely accused of mutiny by a jealous superior. Struck dumb by the accusation, Billy Budd strikes his accuser and accidentally kills him. Left with no choice but to convict Billy Budd, despite his own belief in Billy Budd's innocence, the captain of the ship finds him guilty and has Billy hanged. A tale of the struggle between good and evil, Melville's version has a strongly Christian subtext, and the character of Billy Budd, who sacrifices himself in the struggle against evil, becomes a Christ-like figure.

  • The Final Conflict
[...and HOLLOW MAN] Music by Jerry Goldsmith Film Score Rundown by Bill Wrobel The following is a cue rundown analysis of Jerry Goldsmith’s masterful, memorable score to the third of the Omen Trilogy released in 1981, The Final Conflict. I consider it one of Goldsmith’s best works, up there is the stature of landmark scores such as Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Night Crossing. Within the religious framework of the Omen storyline, I would consider the score as being glorious at points, mystical, and otherworldly. Last evening (Saturday, December 14, 2002) my wife and I went to AMC Theatres to see the latest installment of the franchise, Star Trek: Nemesis, the fifth Trek score composed by Jerry Goldsmith. I was hoping for a new, refreshing variation of the Goldsmithian musical Star Trek universe. While the score had its moments (the “Final Flight” cue), overall I was not too very impressed with the music. This is understandable since the movie itself was far from inspiring! I think the best Goldsmith score in recent years would be Hollow Man (2000), and before that, and to a greater extent, The Shadow (1994). However, Goldsmith’s best period of output was in the mid-Seventies thru mid or late Eighties. His 1973 score to Papillon is a real gem! 1979 was a banner year with the release of not only Star Trek and The Great Train Robbery, but also the critically acclaimed Alien. Final Conflict was the next “big” film. His 1982 score to Poltergeist was exceptional, but I much preferred that year his score to the Disney drama, Night Crossing (a film score rundown of this is included within this site, as well as Star Trek).
