Derbyshire Times 17/4/1886 Murder near Brimington. Inquest on death of Herbert Crookes, butcher of Cutthorpe, found in the canal at Wheeldon Mill, having been robbed of all his money & then murdered. Chief Constable in attendance Evidence of PC William Henry Oliver: I have known deceased for about 8 years. In March 1883 he came to live opposite my station at Cutthorpe. He was later called by Mrs Crookes as her husband was very ill- suffered violent fits for about 6 weeks

Derbyshire Courier 5/3/1889 Theft by Thomas Vaughan. PC William Henry Oliver searched for the prisoner but failed to find him- next day he came to the police station on Marsden St & Oliver took prisoner's name & charged him with theft of 5s

Oliver does not appear to have had a job prior to joining the police force – perhaps at Church Broughton where he met his wife On retirement from police he became a county court bailiff at Buxton His police career took him to Cutthorpe, a small village on the outskirts of Chesterfield. [mainly agricultural] Promotion to sergeant took him to the town of Chesterfield; his final posting was at Bolsover. His social status perhaps improved with his promotion. None of his family worked in the police force
