Ich erfuhr erstmals im August 2013 vom Hyperloop-Konzept, als dieses der breiten Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt wurde. Seither habe ich die Entwicklungen rund um dieses neue Verkehrsmittel rege verfolgt. Die Idee eines komplett neuen Verkehrssystems und die dahinterstehende Technologie finde ich besonders reizvoll. Bestehende offene Fragen zur tatsächlichen Machbarkeit, der Sinnhaftigkeit und der Finanzierbarkeit des Systems haben mich dazu bewogen mich mit dem Themenkomplex im Rahmen meiner Diplomarbeit genauer auseinanderzusetzen. Zusammenfassung In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird zuerst die historische Entwicklung des Schienenhochgeschwindigkeitsverkehrs und der Magnetschwebebahn erörtert. In Folge wird das Hyperloop-Konzept vorgestellt, aktuelle Entwicklungen erörtert und mögliche Anwendungsfälle analysiert. Das Hyperloop-Konzept wurde erstmals im Jahr 2013 vorgestellt und ist ein Verkehrssystem, bei dem Kapseln in einer geschlossenen Röhre (mit einem niedrigeren Luftdruck) transportiert werden. Obwohl die grundsätzliche technologische Machbarkeit des Konzepts nicht bezweifelt wird, gibt es noch einige offene Fragen bezüglich der konkreten Umsetzung. Besonders die geringe Systemkapazität und die zu niedrigen Kostenannahmen werden kritisiert. Mittlerweile arbeitet eine Vielzahl an Unternehmen an einer Umsetzung des Hyperloop- Konzepts und es werden zahlreiche mögliche Hyperloop-Strecken diskutiert. Prinzipiell scheint eine Umsetzung von Hyperloop-Strecken derzeit nur als reine Punkt-zu-Punkt-Verbindungen sinnvoll. Eine mögliche erste Hyperloop-Strecke würde wichtige Erkenntnisse über die tatsächlichen Bau- und Betriebskosten bringen. Dies würde eine fundierte Bewertung der Wirtschaftlichkeit wesentlich vereinfachen. Abstract This thesis begins with an overview of the historical evolution of high-speed rail systems and Maglev trains. The paper subsequently focuses on the Hyperloop concept and analyses possible applications of this new transport system. The Hyperloop was first introduced in 2013 and is a proposed mode of passenger and/or freight transportation. The system consists of a sealed tube through which a pod may travel nearly free of air resistance. Although there are no doubts concerning the technological feasibility, there is criticism regarding the concrete implementation of the Hyperloop. Critics especially question the small system capacity and estimate that the actual costs would be substantially higher than the initial cost assumptions. Numerous companies are currently working on implementing the Hyperloop concept and different Hyperloop-routes are being discussed. An implementation of the Hyperloop only makes sense as a pure point to point connection. Several benefits of this facility are described including that the facility is suitable as a full- scale artificial-gravity space-settlement ground analogue for humans, animals, and plants for indefinite durations. The design is applicable as an analogue for on-orbit settlements as well as those on moons, asteroids, and Mars. The design creates an extremely long-arm centrifuge using a multi-car hypergravity vehicle travelling on one or more concentric circular tracks. This design supports the simultaneous generation of multiple-gravity levels to explore the feasibility and value of and requirements for such space-settlement designs. The design synergizes a variety of existing technologies including centrifuges, tilting trains, roller coasters, and optionally magnetic levitation. The design can be incrementally implemented such that the facility can be operational for a small fraction of the cost and time required for a full implementation. BIRD) When a magnetic source is simultaneously oscillated and translationally moved above a linear conductive passive guideway such as aluminum, eddy-currents are in- duced that give rise to a time-varying opposing field in the air-gap. This time-varying opposing field interacts with the source field, creating simultaneously suspension, propulsion or braking and lateral forces that are required for a Maglev system. In this thesis, a two-dimensional (2-D) analytic based steady-state eddy-current model has been derived for the case when an arbitrary magnetic source is oscillated and moved in two directions above a conductive guideway using a spatial Fourier transform technique. The problem is formulated using both the magnetic vector potential, A, and scalar potential, φ. Using this novel A-φ approach the magnetic source needs to be incorporated only into the boundary conditions of the guideway and only the magnitude of the source field along the guideway surface is required in order to compute the forces and power loss.

Because the Hyperloop is different from conventional transportation, various considerations are required in the vehicle-design stage. Particularly, pre-investigation of the vehicle dynamic characteristics is essential because of the close relationship among the vehicle design parameters, such as size, weight, and suspensions. Accordingly, a 1/10 scale Hyperloop vehicle system model, enabling the analysis of dynamic motions in the vertical and lateral directions, was developed. The reduced-scale model is composed of bogies operated by Stewart platforms, secondary suspension units, and a car body. To realize the bogie motion, an operation algorithm reflecting the external disturbance, SC-EDS levitation, and interaction between the bogie and car body, was applied to the Stewart platform. Flexible rubber springs were used in the secondary suspension unit to enable dynamic characteristic analysis of the vertical and lateral motion. Results of the verification tests were compared with simu- lation results to examine the fitness of the developed model.

This report describes what maglev is, how it works, and will prove that maglev can be successfully constructed and provide many fully operational advantages. The different types of maglev technology were analyzed. Several case studies were examined to understand the different maglev projects whether operational, still in construction, or proposed. This report presents a plan to construct a maglev network using Maglev 2000 vehicles in the United States. A maglev system provides energy, environmental, economic, and quality of life benefits. An energy and cost analysis was performed to determine whether maglev provides value worth pursuing. Maglev has both a lower energy requirement and lower energy costs than other modes of transportation. Maglev trains have about one-third of the energy requirement and about one- third of energy cost of Amtrak trains. Compared to other maglev projects, the U.S. Maglev Network would be cheaper by a weighted average construction cost of $36 million per mile. Maglev could also be applied to convert the Honolulu Rail project in Hawaii from an elevated steel wheel on steel rail system into a maglev system. Due to the many benefits that Maglev offers and the proof that maglev can be implemented successfully, maglev could be the future of transportation not just in the United States but in the world.
