  • Notes Introductory to a Conference On
NOTES INTRODUCTORY TO A CONFERENCE ON PARAPSYCHOLOGY AND PHYSICS. by A.R.G. Owen. New Horizons Research Foundation October 1987. 1 Introduction. The science of physics takes its name from the Greek word used by Aristotle and his contemporaries to refer to nature, i.e. physis. Down the ages it came to mean nature in its most essential aspects — space, time, force and energy -- the stark skeleton of all reality; all findings in other sciences should conform to the doctrines of physics, which thus became the supreme arbiter of the rational. The development of physics (with chemistry now accepted to be one of its branches) tended to reductionalism in psychology and to the devalutation of points of view that now-a-days we regard as important, which may briefly be included under the term "holism". Just as Walter Pater asserted that all arts aspired to attain to the perfection of music, so many scientific disciplines have aspired to the condition of physics, aiming at a rigorously austere mathematical structure. Meanwhile, however, in parallel with the rise of physics and chemistry and evolutionary biology, there occurred the decline and discredit of superstitious beliefs, occultism, and finally religion itself. No one should mourn this; however the wheel might have turned slightly too far in that those apparent but authenticated exceptions to what is believed to be scientifically possible have tended to be disregarded. In the present century, if various popularizers are to be believed, physics itself, particularly in respect of the quantum theory, has shown "occult" tendencies. Therefore students of the paranormal have tended to grasp at this fact in the hope of gaining some insight into the enigmas of their own subject.

  • The History Spiritualism
THE HISTORY of SPIRITUALISM by ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE, M.D., LL.D. former President d'Honneur de la Fédération Spirite Internationale, President of the London Spiritualist Alliance, and President of the British College of Psychic Science Volume Two With Eight Plates Sir Arthur Conon Doyle CHAPTER I THE CAREER OF EUSAPIA PALLADINO The mediumship of Eusapia Palladino marks an important stage in the history of psychical research, because she was the first medium for physical phenomena to be examined by a large number of eminent men of science. The chief manifestations that occurred with her were the movement of objects without contact, the levitation of a table and other objects, the levitation of the medium, the appearance of materialized hands and faces, lights, and the playing of musical instruments without human contact. All these phenomena took place, as we have seen, at a much earlier date with the medium D. D. Home, but when Sir William Crookes invited his scientific brethren to come and examine them they declined. Now for the first time these strange facts were the subject of prolonged investigation by men of European reputation. Needless to say, these experimenters were at first sceptical in the highest degree, and so-called ‘tests’ (those often silly precautions which may defeat the very object aimed at) were the order of the day. No medium in the whole world has been more rigidly tested than this one, and since she was able to convince the vast majority of her sitters, it is clear that her mediumship was of no ordinary type.

Journal of Scientifi c Exploration, Vol. 26, No. 1, pp. 159–167, 2012 0892-3310/12 ESSAY REVIEW Bottazzi and Palladino: The 1907 Seances Mediumistic Phenomena: Observed in a Series of Sessions with Eusapia Palladino by Filippo Bottazzi, translated by Irmeli Routti and Antonio Giuditta. Princeton, NJ: ICRL Press, 2011. 201 pp. $12.95. ISBN 9781936033058. In 1908 a student of psychic phenomena stated that Italian medium Eusapia Palladino (1854–1918) had been mentioned thousands of times in the reviews of psychic topics. About her mediumship, we were told, “now there exists an entire library” (Morselli 1908, Vol. 1:132). The book commented on here is part of that library. Palladino showed mental phenomena such as communications said to come mainly from her spirit control John King, but her performances consisted mostly of physical phenomena such as movement of objects, imprints on clay, luminous effects, raps, touches, cold winds, and materializations. While she belongs to the old days of psychical research, her presence still lingers among us, as seen in defenses of the reality of her manifestations (e.g., Braude 2007), in historical overviews (e.g., Blondel 2002), and in papers that have been published in relatively recent issues of the JSE (Alvarado 2011, Giuditta 2010). As I have argued before, Palladino’s case was important for the development of psychical research in various ways (Alvarado 1993, 2011). Historically speaking, the medium’s performances were a factor that led researchers to produce methodological and conceptual developments, and the sensational character of her phenomena and the publicity around them created various images about mediumship.

AS A TOKEN OF MY RESPECT AND ESTEEM FOE HIS UNRECOGNIZED GENIUS PREFACE While much has been written in France and Italy con- cerning the remarkable woman who forms the subject of this book, but little has appeared either in England or America—with the exception of M. Flammarion's work, Mysterious Psychic Forces, and a series of articles that have appeared from time to time in the English edition of the Annals of Psychical Science, Yet the case is one of the most remarkable that has come to the attention of the scientific world for many years—since we are concerned, apparently, with movements of physical objects without contact, and even far more startling phenomena—contrary to the known laws of physics and physiology. In the following book I propose to lay before the reader a summary of all the historic evidence available, together with a detailed record of our own experiments with this medium, conducted in Naples, in November and December, 1908; a complete resume of every theory that has been ad- vanced to date—with a provisional hypothesis of my own; and then to discuss at some length the biological and psy- chological peculiarities of the case—from the point of view of one who assumes, on the strength of the existing testi- mony, that the facts are established.

EVERARD FEILDING, WHOSE ACUMEN, CRITICAL JUDGMENT, AND IMPARTIALITY MAKE HIM, IN MY ESTIMATION, AN IDEAL " PSYCHICAL RESEARCHER." 5;^8nV i —; PREFACE The present volume contains a summary of my experiences and experiments in the " physical phenomena of Spiritualism "—in that branch of psychic research which deals with the subject and the reader will notice a curious contrast between Parts I and II of the book. While Part I is almost entirely negative, Part II is equally positive; while the one destroys, the other builds up ! This is due to the fact that physical mediums, who present genuine phenomena, are rare indeed and though, at the present day, I am quite con- vinced of the reahty of such phenomena—and even that materialisation is a certain and positive fact in nature—yet I still believe as firmly as when I wrote " The Physical Phenomena of Spirit- uahsm," that "ninety-eight per cent of the pheno- mena are fraudulent.'' Very rarely can one find a medium presenting genuine manifestations—at least that has been my experience. Yet they are to be found ! Eusapia Palladino is one of these ; and I have devoted Part II to a detailed account of her American seances, hitherto unpubHshed.
