Australia Men’s wins Azlan Shah Cup defeated 3-2 via a golden goal to lift the 20th Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh on Monday night. It was Australia’s sixth title since the inception of the tournament in 1983.

In the first five minutes both teams were cautious. But Pakistan looked more comfortable while in possession. Although Australia were awarded a penalty corner in the 7th minute, Pakistan’s keeper Imran Shah pulled off a spectacular save to deny Christopher Ciriello. However it was Australia that drew first blood in the 11th minute when Christopher Ciriello converted a penalty corner. Although Imran Shah got a foot to it, the sheer power beat the Pakistani custodian.

Pakistan almost drew level in the 20th minute when Mohd Rizwan Senior had a clean strike on goal from the top of the semi circle. But Australian keeper George Bazeley not only saved the initial shot but did well to deny the rebound as well.

It was a off their second penalty corner that Pakistan equalized in the 31st minute. Waseem Ahmad trapped the ball before squaring it to Sohail Abbas who scored with a powerful flick. Though it was Pakistan that held the lion share of possession in the early stages of the second half, their failure to convert a penalty corner in the 38th minute allowed Australia the confidence to attack.

And Glenn Turner scored in the 44th minute as his attempt from the edge of the semi circle gave Imran no chance whatsoever as Australia led 2-1. Shakeel then went on one of his solo runs in the 62nd minute, leaving defenders in his wake and laid a pass onto Muhd Waqas who shot was saved by Bazeley but Rehan Butt squeezed the ball over the line and Pakistan were on level terms.

In the 74th minute Australia was awarded a penalty corner but Imran was the hero for the Pakistanis, saving Ciriello’s attempt on the

goal line. And two minutes later, Imran saved a point blank shot from Glenn Turner to deny the Aussies.

In the final minute of the first half of extra time, Australia got another penalty corner but failed to score. Pakistan were given a chance to seal it following a penalty corner awarded in the 79th minute, but Imran shot wide as Sohail was not on the pitch. Ciriello needed no second invitation as he sent the ball into the net in the 83rd minute to give Australia the title.
