This year she had the unenviable task of seeing the weeks slip away past her scheduled deadline because of the insurance debacle (see more on this below) and was unable even to send Fregistration forms out to organisers until it was resolved. When it WAS finally settled, ages past her deadline, she nevertheless managed somehow to collect all the information in, process it, check it, proof it and still get the Calendar out before Christmas a truly Herculean effort and one that thoroughly deserves our gratitude!! On the insurance issue, you will find a very detailed explanation of what happened, why it happened and what the implications are in an article by Alan Brentnall inside this edition of the magazine but there are a couple of points I would like to make on this:- 1. Despite what some people have been saying the FRA did not CHOOSE to withdraw insurance from Welsh, Scottish and Irish races, it had no option whatsoever because UK Athletics, via whom the FRA gets its insurance, decided without any consultation or discussion with the FRA that the FRA could only register races in England. This meant that therefore only English races could be insured via FRA registration. The FRA doesn’t like this situation at all (and neither do a lot of Scots, Welsh and Irish !!) but it is, at present, stuck with it.

This item is brought to Committee at the request of a Member of the Council 1.0 Site, context and proposal 1.1 The site is a parcel of land located to the rear of a relatively large detached dwelling just to the east of the High Street on the southern edge of Great Broughton. At present the site forms part of the rear garden and a small paddock to the rear of the dwelling - 151 High Street. The southern and eastern edges are bounded by dense hedgerows, with the start of rolling countryside beyond the eastern boundary. To the north is a small cul-de-sac of dwellings named Cringle Moor Chase. The rear of the southern most dwelling looks onto the site, with their rear gardens sharing a common boundary with the site and the adjacent paddock. 1.2 This application is seeking permission for a change of use of the land in question to allow the siting of two holiday lodges. These holiday lodges will be timber clad static caravans with the external appearance of cabins. They will be sited side on to 151 High Street, the northern most one being 17m to the east of this dwelling and 18m south of the boundary of Cringle Moor Chase.

    Kim Collison: I love to challenge myself I am passionate about running and off-road in particular. Fell, trail, ultra - all of them. I guess my main passion is mountains. Being out in nature and exploring comes into it too. I am quite competitive. The race element comes right to the fore for me. I love to challenge myself. Kim Collison attempts to summarise his passion for being out in the mountains. I talked to him just after he had set a new winter Bob Graham Round record this December. He went on to explain his background and how he got into his sport, whilst also giving details of that impressive winter effort. Kim Collison is not a native of Cumbria, although he has lived there for a while now. He grew up in Tring, in Hertfordshire, and ended up at Tring Running Club. His father was interested in sports and in running in particular. Kim enjoyed running from a very early age. As a young kid he was always outside playing. At Secondary School, Hemel Hempstead School, he did a bit of cross country, but says he wasn't so good at team games. ‘One year I remember not getting in the school cross country team’, he recalls, ‘and then going on and winning all the PE lesson cross countries the next year. I was that driven and competitive. I didn't stand out at County level or anything mind.’ He was in the Scouts and did a lot of hiking in the mountains. Through this he was learning navigation, being taken to the Lakes and Snowdonia.

Map Ref: SD661502 OS Explorer 0L41, ready for the usual start time of 10.30am We follow the River Dunsop along farm access tracks passing, small dams, flood barriers a nd onto Brennand Farm, after passing through the farm an uphill track takes us to Whitendale. The ascent, though initially steep, the gradient soon eases and the Whitendale Valley comes into view. We then follow an old railway and pipeline track to make ou r return journey back to Dunsop Bridge. The walk takes in magnificent views of the Bowland Fells and is very near the centre of Britain. Wednesday 17th April Strollers walk Clitheroe Sculpture Park with Barbara, Margaret and Linda (two to three miles).     RIVER QUALITY SURVEY NATIONAL RIVERS AUTHORITY NORTHUMBRIA & YORKSHIRE REGION GQA ASSESSMENT 1994 PART 1 REA CH CLASSIFICA TION FRESHWATER RIVERS AND CANALS VERSION 1: AUGUST 1995 GQA ASSESSMENT 1994 \ NORTHUMBRIA & YORKSHIRE REGION To allow the development of a National method of evaluating water quality, the rivers in all the NRA regions of England and Wales have been divided into reaches, which are numbered using a coding system based on the hydrological reference for each river basin. Each classified reach then has a chemistry sample point assigned to it and these sample points are regularly monitored for Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Dissolved oxygen (DO) and Total Ammonia. The summary statistics calculated from the results of this sampling are sent to a National Centre where the GQA Grades are calculated. A National report is produced and each region can then produce more detailed reports on the quality of their own rivers. For Northumbria and Yorkshire Region, this Regional Report has been divided into two parts. PARTI: REACH CLASSIFICATION This report contains a listing of the river reaches within the region, with their start and finish grid reference, approximate length, and the 1990 and 1994 GQA class for each reach. The reference code of the chemistry sample point used to classify the reach is also included. A sample point may classify several reaches if there are no major discharges or tributaries dividing those reaches. The sample point used to classify a reach may change and the classification is therefore calculated using the summary statistics for each sample point that has been used over the past three years.

It is largely the fruit of many pleasant hours of botanising by the author and a few others and as such reflects their particular interests. History of Plant Recording Peeblesshire is thinly populated and has had few resident botanists to record its flora. Also its upland terrain held little in the way of dramatic features or geology to attract outside botanists. Consequently the first list of the county’s flora with any pretension to completeness only became available in 1925 with the publication of the History of Peeblesshire (Eds, JW Buchan and H Paton). For this FRS Balfour and AB Jackson provided a chapter on the county’s flora which included a list of all the species known to occur. The first records were made by Dr A Pennecuik in 1715. He gave localities for 30 species and listed 8 others, most of which are still to be found. Thereafter for some 140 years the only evidence of interest is a few specimens in the national herbaria and scattered records in Lightfoot (1778), Watson (1837) and The New Statistical Account (1834-45).
