This year she had the unenviable task of seeing the weeks slip away past her scheduled deadline because of the insurance debacle (see more on this below) and was unable even to send Fregistration forms out to organisers until it was resolved. When it WAS finally settled, ages past her deadline, she nevertheless managed somehow to collect all the information in, process it, check it, proof it and still get the Calendar out before Christmas a truly Herculean effort and one that thoroughly deserves our gratitude!! On the insurance issue, you will find a very detailed explanation of what happened, why it happened and what the implications are in an article by Alan Brentnall inside this edition of the magazine but there are a couple of points I would like to make on this:- 1. Despite what some people have been saying the FRA did not CHOOSE to withdraw insurance from Welsh, Scottish and Irish races, it had no option whatsoever because UK Athletics, via whom the FRA gets its insurance, decided without any consultation or discussion with the FRA that the FRA could only register races in England. This meant that therefore only English races could be insured via FRA registration. The FRA doesn’t like this situation at all (and neither do a lot of Scots, Welsh and Irish !!) but it is, at present, stuck with it.

    Kim Collison: I love to challenge myself I am passionate about running and off-road in particular. Fell, trail, ultra - all of them. I guess my main passion is mountains. Being out in nature and exploring comes into it too. I am quite competitive. The race element comes right to the fore for me. I love to challenge myself. Kim Collison attempts to summarise his passion for being out in the mountains. I talked to him just after he had set a new winter Bob Graham Round record this December. He went on to explain his background and how he got into his sport, whilst also giving details of that impressive winter effort. Kim Collison is not a native of Cumbria, although he has lived there for a while now. He grew up in Tring, in Hertfordshire, and ended up at Tring Running Club. His father was interested in sports and in running in particular. Kim enjoyed running from a very early age. As a young kid he was always outside playing. At Secondary School, Hemel Hempstead School, he did a bit of cross country, but says he wasn't so good at team games. ‘One year I remember not getting in the school cross country team’, he recalls, ‘and then going on and winning all the PE lesson cross countries the next year. I was that driven and competitive. I didn't stand out at County level or anything mind.’ He was in the Scouts and did a lot of hiking in the mountains. Through this he was learning navigation, being taken to the Lakes and Snowdonia.

The summary statistics calculated from the results of this sampling are sent to a National Centre where the GQA Grades are calculated. A National report is produced and each region can then produce more detailed reports on the quality of their own rivers. For Northumbria and Yorkshire Region, this Regional Report has been divided into two parts. PARTI: REACH CLASSIFICATION This report contains a listing of the river reaches within the region, with their start and finish grid reference, approximate length, and the 1990 and 1994 GQA class for each reach. The reference code of the chemistry sample point used to classify the reach is also included. A sample point may classify several reaches if there are no major discharges or tributaries dividing those reaches. The sample point used to classify a reach may change and the classification is therefore calculated using the summary statistics for each sample point that has been used over the past three years.

It is largely the fruit of many pleasant hours of botanising by the author and a few others and as such reflects their particular interests. History of Plant Recording Peeblesshire is thinly populated and has had few resident botanists to record its flora. Also its upland terrain held little in the way of dramatic features or geology to attract outside botanists. Consequently the first list of the county’s flora with any pretension to completeness only became available in 1925 with the publication of the History of Peeblesshire (Eds, JW Buchan and H Paton). For this FRS Balfour and AB Jackson provided a chapter on the county’s flora which included a list of all the species known to occur. The first records were made by Dr A Pennecuik in 1715. He gave localities for 30 species and listed 8 others, most of which are still to be found. Thereafter for some 140 years the only evidence of interest is a few specimens in the national herbaria and scattered records in Lightfoot (1778), Watson (1837) and The New Statistical Account (1834-45).
