Following a review of the literature to provide a context for this kind of research, the paper offers demographic data about the students on both sites (n=27 at each site) and describes visits to the middle school and the university: The paper uses samples from letters to give a flavor of the richness of the project and explores issues arising from the letters and the entire experience. The paper concludes that the benefits were "enormous" for all participants, and that it is important for a teacher-educator to keep in touch with the realities of the public schools. Contains 10 references; appendixes include a data sheet for participants; a survey of reading interests, and 2 original letters from middle schoolers. URGENT! Nothing chmn Kevin Martin said at CES Wed offers much hope that the Commission will delay the July 1 deadline for deploying set-tops with sepa- rable security. NCTA wants the ban delayed until ops deploy a new downloadable security system, or until 2010 (whichever comes first). In a statement, Martin said he would have “preferred to establish a timeframe for cable operators to develop and deploy downloadable security with adequate assurance that this timeframe would actu- ally be met,” but in the absence of “real progress” on that or 2-way plug & play discussions, “I think the Commission needs to move forward with its current rules.” While the Media Bureau indicated it would grant waivers to small ops who commit to going all-digital before ‘09, those ops aren’t exactly turning cartwheels. “We highly appreciate that Chairman Martin and the FCC are sensitive to the unique concerns of smaller operators in the Media Bureau’s orders on set-top boxes. However, it is, unfortunately, unrealistic that most smaller cable companies will be able to upgrade to all-digital prior to the DTV deadline in February 2009,” said ACA pres/CEO Matt Polka. Like Comcast, ACA thinks that low-cost digital boxes should be exempt from the ban. -

Professor Louie Dean Valencia English 1102, R15 [email protected] Office Hours: @BurntCitrus on Twitter Dealy Hall 627 |Mon, 11am-12noon NotebooksForDialogue.org Rodrigues|Thurs, 1pm-2:00pm PaintingBohemia.org Class Location: FMH 308, 2:30pm Course Objectives: This is an intensive course in expository writing that aims to teach you to write effectively by using correct grammar, sound logic, and persuasive rhetoric. Though we will read and discuss writing by a variety of authors, your own writing will be the primary focus in this class. Through your writing, revision, reading, and class discussion, you will analyze the relationship between writing and thinking. To aid you in this endeavor, this course will introduce you to various research techniques, including the use of the library, the conventions and principles of documentation, the art of synthesis, and the analysis of sources. You are expected to participate actively in class, revise your work, and critique the work of your fellow students. You will receive individual guidance in discovering for yourself the ways in which our writing affects our thinking, and our thinking our writing. With the primary focus of the course being bettering students’ rhetorical and logical skills, the class will focus on bohemian and youth cultures in modernity, debating issues of gender, race, class, nationalism, consumer culture and technology. In addition to the required texts, supplementary texts will include essays, primary sources, films and scholarly articles. This course demands self-motivation, dedicated reading, critical writing, and class participation. Note: Changes may be made to this syllabus during the course of the semester. -

Punknews.org | Jim Carroll (1949-2009) In Memoriam: Jim Carroll (1949-2009) Posted by aubin on Monday, September 14, 2009 at 12:00 AM (EDT) Legendary punk poet Jim Carroll has passed away at 60. The cause was a heart attack, said Rosemary Carroll, his former wife. Carroll was well-known in the mainstream for the film, The Basketball Diaries, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and covered his youth. His poetry and music was very influential, with Patti Smith saying: I met him in 1970, and already he was pretty much universally recognized as the best poet of his generation, The work was sophisticated and elegant. He had beauty. His fans included Allen Ginsberg, Ted Berrigan and Jack Kerouac and he contribued dialogue for Andy Warhol’s films. Jim collaborated with musicians Lou Reed, Blue Öyster Cult, Boz Scaggs, Ray Manzarek of The Doors, Pearl Jam, and Rancid. One of his poems is the source of the phrase "… And Out Come the Wolves" which inspired the album of the same name and also featured his voice. Our deepest condolences to his friends, family and fans.
