PUBLICATIONS Restoring Landscapes in India for Climate and Communities - Ruchika Singh, Karishma Shelar, Rohini Chaturvedi, Marie Duraisami & Rajendra Singh Gautam In this report, WRI India uncovers diverse potential and opportunities in the Sidhi District of Madhya Pradesh to restore landscapes, by adapting the popular Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM) to ecosystem services, livelihood benefits, land tenure, gender, and social inclusion and by mapping the social landscape. COMMENTARIES Tracking India's Industrial Evolution with Electric Mobility - Neha Yadav & Pawan Mulukutla The paper highlights key observations and lists policy pathways that can guide decision makers in state and central governments, and stakeholders in the industry and academia, to chart the way ahead and identify the areas that need policy intervention in the EV sphere. We posit that policymakers can play a key role in driving competition, and thereby reap the rewards of economic development – including technological leadership, active participation in the global value chain and developing human capital and resource efficiency. WRI INDIA EVENTS Online Training: Greenhouse Gas Inventory and Inclusive Climate Action Planning for Urban Local Bodies November 2020 - February 2021 WRI India partnered with the EU International Urban Cooperation Programme (IUC- India) and ICLEI South, within the framework of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate Change and Energy (GCoM), to deliver a series of training programs between November 2020 through February 2021, for urban officials and practitioners. The workshops were designed to assist cities develop a standardized GHG inventory, formulate inclusive climate action plans, and improve performance under the Government of India’s Climate Smart Cities Assessment Framework. More than 220 urban officials from 77 cities across 18 Indian States participated in this series. True Opportunity of Restoring Land: Lessons from India 9 December 2020 WRI India organized a panel discussion on occasion of the launch of the report ‘Restoring Landscapes in India for Climate and Communities: Key Findings from Madhya Pradesh’s Sidhi District’ on 9 December 2020.The panelists included Manoj Shrivastava (Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Madhya Pradesh), Dr. Musonda Mumba (Chief, Terrestrial Ecosystems Unit, UN Environment), Jamshyd Godrej and Dr. Ashok Khosla (WRI India Board Members), Edel Monteiro (Knowledge Manager, India Climate Collaborative), Wanjira Mathai (Vice President and Director, WRI Africa), Dr. Ruchika Singh and Dr. OP Agarwal (WRI India) and Sean DeWitt (WRI). On 22 December 2020, Dr. Ruchika Singh presented to WRI India’s board members, Jamshyd Godrej, Ashok Khosla, Ravi Pandit and Pramod Deo, the findings from the report, along with updates on the MoU signed with the Department of Panchayat and Rural Development, Government of Madhya Pradesh to support implementation. Ideas to Improve TANGEDCO's Financial Situation - Subsidies, Profitability, Improvement Levers and New Tariff Design 14 December 2020 Under the Sustainable Energy Transformation in Tamil Nadu (SET-TN) initiative, WRI India along with the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) hosted a webinar, which entailed discussions on challenges, ideas and opportunities to improve financial health of Tamil Nadu Generation & Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO). The session was moderated by Sandhya Sundararagavan (Lead, energy Transition, WRI India). Speakers included S. Sankara Narayanan (Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency), Ann Josey (Prayas Energy Group), S. Venkatachalam (The Madras Chamber of Commerce & Industry), Martin Scheffler (Auroville Consulting) and Harsha Meenawat (Senior Research Specialist, WRI India). See full recording. Electric Vehicles Ready Streets and Buildings 15 December 2020 WRI India hosted this webinar to drive integrated action towards EV transition. The objective behind it was to understand next steps for ensuring an adequate provision of charging infrastructure in the built fabric of our cities. Comprising of two panel discussions, the event brought together experts and practitioners from public and private sectors, to reflect on a practical roadmap for moving from policy to implementation. Dr. OP Agarwal (CEO, WRI India) gave the opening remarks whereas the session was moderated by Chaitanya Kanuri (Manager, WRI India) and Pawan Mulukutla (Director, Electric Mobility, WRI India). Participants from WRI India included: Amit Bhatt (Executive Director, Integrated Transport, WRI India) and Madhav Pai (Executive Director, WRI India Ross Center for Sustainable Cities). Driving Road Safety and Traffic Management through Emerging Technologies 12 January 2021 WRI India hosted a virtual event on the topic of emerging technologies for road safety and traffic management. The event addressed some of the key themes on urban roads, convening engineers, traffic police, transport planners, policymakers, road safety experts and technology providers for a discussion on the need and ways to integrate relevant technology tools in road safety and traffic management governance frameworks. Opening remarks in the webinar were given by Amit Bhatt (Executive Director, Integrated Transport, WRI India) while it was moderated by Chaitanya Kanuri (Manager, WRI India). See full recording. Energy Efficiency - Approaches, Opportunities & Technology 28 January 2021 This was the third session of the ongoing MSME Training Series on Climate Change, hosted by WRI India in partnership with CII, that aims to facilitate a transition towards a low-carbon, profitable and resilient MSME sector. This series is designed and conceived by the WRI India’s Climate team. This session, featuring speakers from WRI, CII, Godrej & Boyce, Systel, Best Colour Solutions, Greenovative Energy Solutions and Aspiration Energy, trained 97 participants from the private sector on the basic concepts of energy management, energy efficiency opportunities and technology solutions for enterprises, and successful implementation models in the MSME sector. Book Talks with Dr. Amita Baviskar - Uncivil City: Ecology, Equity and the Commons in Delhi 17 February 2021 WRI India Book Talks engage with timely and compelling new books and discuss their implications on policy and action. This session was a discussion between the author Dr. Amita Baviskar (Professor, Environmental Studies and Sociology & Anthropology, Ashoka University), and Dr. Shahana Chattaraj (Director, Research Data and Innovation) and Dr. Madhu Verma (Chief Economist) from WRI India. The discussion addressed questions like: Can we, and should we, put a ‘value’ on the urban commons; what the prospects for more broad-based and inclusive urban environmental politics and mobilization are, etc. It was followed by an audience Q&A session. Developing Strategies for BESCOM to Maximize Renewable Energy Sales to Commercial & Industrial Consumers 24 February 2021 This webinar was held in continuation to WRI India’s efforts in the direction of a new, and often discounted, perspective – that of the electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOMs). It highlighted WRI India’s research on how the Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) can innovate in this clean energy transition. Moderated by Deepak Krishnan (Associate Director, WRI India) the event was attended by Shashi Shekhar (Senior Fellow, WRI India), Ashok Thanikonda (Manager, WRI India), Rasika Athawale (Advisor, Regulatory Assistance Project), Ajit Pandit (Director, IDAM) and Rakesh Jha (Director, Meghraj Capital Advisors). A Discussion on Tracking India's Electric Vehicle Industrial Revolution 2 March 2021 With the diffusion of Electric Vehicle (EV) technology in India, upcoming and established firms have begun launching new products, services and business models to increase their competitiveness. To kick-start a policy conversation, WRI India launched a strategic commentary 'Tracking India’s Industrial Evolution with Electric Mobility'. The launch was followed by a discussion wherein panellists ideated new approaches to some of the vital aspects of EV value chain – circular business models, leveraging incoming businesses from a diversity of new sectors, investing in knowledge economy, human capital, and innovation and R&D. The discussion was moderated by Madhav Pai (Executive Director, WRI India Ross Centre). Neha Yadav (Senior Project Associate, WRI India) and Pawan Mulukutla (Director, Electric Mobility, WRI India) were in attendance, as were Jayesh Ranjan (IAS, Principal Secretary to Government of Telangana), Jyothilal KR (IAS, Principal Secretary to Government of Kerala), Haimanti Poddar (Senior Energy, Climate Change & Urban Adviser, British Deputy High Commission), Vivekananda Hallekere (Co-Founder and CEO, Bounce), Dr. Tom Barnes (Senior Research Fellow, Australian Catholic University & Author of ‘Making Cars in New India’) and Randheer Singh (Senior Specialist, E-Mobility & Core team, NITI Aayog).
