MEDICAL PROBLEMS AND TREATMENT CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE RED IMPORTED FIRE ANT Bastiaan M. Drees, Professor and Extension Entomologist DISCLAIMER: This fact sheet provides a review of information gathered regarding medical aspects of the red imported fire ant. As such, this fact sheet is not intended to provide treatment recommendations for fire ant stings or reactions that may develop as a result of a stinging incident. Readers are encouraged to seek health-related advice and recommendations from their medical doctors, allergists or other appropriate specialists. Imported fire ants, which include the red imported fire ant - Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), the black imported fire ant - Solenopsis richteri Forel and the hybrid between S. invicta and S. richteri, cause medical problems when sterile female worker ants from a colony sting and inject a venom that cause localized sterile blisters, whole body allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock and occasionally death. In Texas, S. invicta is the only imported fire ant, although several species of native fire ants occur in the state such as the tropical fire ant, S. geminata (Fabricius), and the desert fire ant, S. xyloni McCook, which are also capable of stinging (see FAPFS010 and 013 for identification keys). Over 40 million people live in areas infested by the red imported fire ant in the southeastern United States. An estimated 14 million people are stung annually. According to The Scripps Howard Texas Poll (March 2000), 79 percent of Texans have been stung by fire ants in the year of the survey, while 20% of Texans report not ever having been stung. -

Its presence was officially announced in mainland China in Jan 2005. To date, it has been identified in 4 provinces in mainland China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Fujian) in a total of 31 municipal districts. The total area reported to be infested by S. invicta in late 2006 was about 7,120 ha, mainly in Guangdong Province (6,332 ha). Most of the re- ported human stings are in the heavily infested area around Wuchuan City. The most com- monly reported reactions have been abnormal redness of the skin, sterile pustules, hives, pain, and/or fever. It has been predicted that most of mainland China is viable habitat for red imported fire ants, including 25 of 31 provinces. The probable northern limit of expan- sion reaches Shandong, Tianjing, south Henan, and Shanxi provinces. Traditional and new insecticides including the bait N-butyl perfluorooctane sulfonamide and the contact insecti- cide Yichaoqing have been developed and used to control S. invicta. Records of the South Australian Museum Monograph Series No. 7: 11–16. On 22 February 2001, an Australian National Insect Collection taxonomist positively identified ant specimens submitted by two members of the public in Brisbane Australia as Solenopsis invicta Buren (red imported fire ants). Widely regarded as a serious agricultural and environmental pest as well as a threat to human health, its discovery triggered an emergency response by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries. Subsequent intensive surveillance revealed two separate and well-established fire ant populations covering approximately 36 000 ha of parkland, suburban areas and industrial land. A plan to eradicate this invasive species has been developed with funding of more than AU$120 million over five years granted by the Agriculture and Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand. Costs are shared between the Federal Government and the States/ Territories. The eradication program is possibly the most ambitious and important effort ever undertaken to eradicate an invertebrate pest in Australia. RED IMPORTED FIRE ANT Solenopsis invicta The Situation: The Red Imported Fire Ant (RIFA, for short) is a major economic pest in the southeastern United States. It originates in lowland areas of South America, primarily Brazil and Argentina. Since its first documented interception in 1984 at a border station in California, periodic outbreaks have occurred in several counties. In the past these outbreaks were limited to private properties amenable to rapid eradication efforts. Commerce from infested areas in the East will continue to seed these ants in California. Damage: These ants pose an immediate threat to the area’s economy Red Imported Fire Ant because they require a quarantine of nursery products. In quarantined areas, plants cannot be shipped without labor-intensive and expensive drenching of all plants with pesticides. Their stinging behavior can be hazardous to field workers as the sting is noxious and produces a pustule on the skin that can scar if infected. Newborn livestock and poultry are vulnerable to attack. They can clog irrigation lines and short-circuit electrical systems. In natural ecosystems they interfere with and displace native wildlife. Economic Impact: The farm gate values for woody ornamental production nurseries in Orange, Los Angeles and San Diego counties in 1997 was $439 million, making it one of the major crops in these areas. This industry faces the immediate impact of quarantine regulations. There will be immediate expenses involving the application of pesticides to all plants in quarantined areas. In Texas, over $1.1 billion is spent annually for fire ant pesticides, and $872 million of that is for lawns. -
