Next fall, Page 10 students and faculty alike will begin navigating the semester system. We include a description of the Outstanding requirements of both our majors under semesters further along in this newsletter. Alums 2011 We have had a few changes in our faculty since we last communicated with you. We have added an Page 11 Instructor of Anthropology, Dr. Laurel Monnig. Dr. Monnig received her Ph.D. from the University of ATH Alumni Round Illinois-Urbana-Champaign in 2008, and has done fieldwork in the Micronesia. Her position was created Up Fall 2011 to allow us to provide all incoming Nursing majors with a required introductory course in cultural anthropology. In addition, Dr. LaFleur Small was promoted to Associate Professor of Sociology with Page 12 tenure this past September, and Dr. Gaetano Guzzo, Mrs. Azadeh Jahanbegloo, and Dr. Frank Eguaroje 2011 Field School in were all promoted over the last two years from Instructor to the rank of Lecturer. Dr. Guzzo subsequently Archaeology resigned from the University after the summer of 2011, and we have just hired his replacement, Mr. Jonathan Varhola. Jonathan is a recent graduate of the WSU Applied Behavioral Science M.A. program, Page 13 and has taught several courses for us as an adjunct instructor during the past year. Dr. Anna Bellisari Dates to Remember recently informed us that she will retire at the end of June, 2012, and a national search for her ATH Graduate Stu- replacement is currently underway. Ann has been with the department since joining us full time in 1989, dent—C. Jones filling the position vacated by Dr. John Thatcher, but she actually began to regularly teach for us as an adjunct starting in 1982 while she was completing her doctorate at Ohio State. Page 14 Symposium on the In additional faculty moves, Dr. Marlese Durr spent the entire 2011 calendar year in Washington D.C. on Moorehead Circle a Franklin Fellowship, working for the U.S. Department of State. Dr. Jacqueline Bergdahl served as the WSU Faculty President in 2010-11, and in 2011-12 both she and Dr. Chigon Kim were granted Page 15 Professional Development Leaves (sabbaticals). Faculty News—A. Jahanbegloo and C. Kim I regret to tell you that we lost Dr. Matthew Melko during the summer of 2010. Matt was hired into Wright State in 1976 as the new department chair, in which position he served until 1982. Matt had many interests, but he was passionate about the development of civilizations, and he was deeply involved with the professional society known as the International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations. Page 16 In Memoriam— He served as Professor of Sociology until his retirement in 1995. He was a mentor to some and a friend to Matt Melko us all, and I distinctly recall how helpful he was to me when I succeeded him in 1982 as the department chair in my first stint in the job. Page 18 Faculty Information The following pages contain more information on what we have been doing and where the Department finds itself at the dawn of 2012. As always, we invite you to communicate – or stop in and visit – with us. We also invite you to post the page at the end of the newsletter or send us an email to tell us what you are Page 19 Send Us Your News up to. We take great pride in what our alumni are doing: the diversity of your accomplishments is indeed gratifying. FACULTY NEWS—JACQUELINE BERGDAHL I was Faculty president for the academic year 2010-2011. I learned a lot about governance in general during my two years involved in faculty governance (as Faculty President elect, then Faculty President). When I ran for the office I thought my duties would primarily revolve around getting the curriculum converted from quarters to semesters. And I did spend quite a bit of time with that issue, primarily running the degree programs and course approvals through the Faculty Senate meeting process. I also spent a lot of time with the campus master plan. I created an ad hoc com- mittee of faculty to ensure faculty representation during the master planning process. This committee met both with and separately from the University Building and Grounds committee. Considering how volatile the issues were con- cerning placement of future buildings on campus, I was very pleased when these two groups were eventually able to write a joint recommendation that was then used to refine the campus master plan. I also spent a great deal of time finalizing the Faculty Constitution. I had been involved in the Quadrennial Review Committee before coming into office and shepherded the constitution through the final phases of comment and approval while Faculty Presi- dent. The faculty governance system is a fascinating organism and I highly recommend getting involved if you want to see the big picture and have a voice in the governance of Wright State. I was granted a full year's professional development leave for the last year of quarters (2011-2012). My research languished while I was involved in faculty governance and I have been happy to revisit my research agenda. I have submitted an article that came out of ABS student David Knight's project about the characteristics of students who gamble online to the Journal of Gambling Studies. I am working on an article about Teaching and Food for submis- sion to the journal Food, Culture and Society as well as an article that looks at the impact of social class on driving.
