Having left Switzerland in 2013, I decided to return again last January for some skiing in Flumserberg. While on the slopes Bachar and Stephan scored 50 against 4H so we lost 3 IMPs. I received the call I had been hoping for – I was needed in St Moritz! Board 17 was a dull push - 3N had nine top tricks with all the suits stopped. I always enjoy to the St Moritz tournament. The combination On 18 Fernando pushed to 4H but had he contented himself with 3H the final contract would have of skiing in the morning, a single session in the late afternoon, been the same. I took the normal 11 tricks and was surprised to win 10 IMPs when NS at the other and dinner around 8 PM suits me well. Staying in the beautiful table stopped in 2H. Kulm hotel was an added bonus. Our auction: I did not turn in noteworthy results in the mixed or open pairs, but there›s always another event! I was especially looking 1c 1H forward to the Swiss, where I›d be paired with my old partner Adam Wildawsky 4H Fernando Piedra and with Stephan Magnusson and Bachar Abouchanab, two of our teammates from the Swiss national team. At the other table: Eleven teams entered the event, with strong players from all over Europe. After two days the field was 1N 2d divided into A and B finals. We were lying second and joined the Ward, Wrang, and Auken teams in 2H Final A, organized as a four-team knockout with two 14-board matches. Fernando conjured an extra overtrick out of nowhere to win an IMP on 19. We were in 3N, our As the winner of the Swiss stage, the Ward team had their choice of semi-final opponent and they opponents at the other table in 4S, both normal, cold contracts. Our auction was: picked the Wrang team, leaving us to face Sabine Auken, Roy Welland, Sebastian Reim, and Ullrich Jahr. While this was a strong team it was a lucky draw for us because we had done well against them 1S 1N in the Swiss, leaving us with a good carryover. We were down 12-24 after the first half but outscored 3N our opponents 26-5 in the second half to win without the need for our carryover. 3d making 4 on 20 was another dull push. We were to face Ward in the final: Kiki Ward-Platt, François Combescure, Cedric Lorenzini, Jérôme Rombaut. The latter three are members of the 2017 French national team that lost narrowly in the On board 21 Fernando and I missed a grand slam off only Qxx of trump. We were lucky to lose just Bermuda Bowl final in Lyon in August. Ward had tied their semi-final match and won a two-board two IMPs. NS at the other table were arguably even luckier – they›d have been down in 6N with 3-0 playoff, so we were better rested! We had defeated Ward by 2 IMPs in the Swiss, so we took a 0.6 clubs and a misguess. They picked up 2 IMPs though. IMP carryover into the final. I figured that this would at least ensure that the match was not a tie, a good thing since I had a train to catch. We took a six IMP lead into the second half, plus our 0.6 IMP carryover. Fernando and I faced off against Combescure & Rombaut for the first half of the final. I was North. I sat East for the final set. On the first deal, Fernando made an aggressive invite and I was delighted to accept.
