September - October 2019 • Volume 12, Issue 5 Shriners International • Ziyara Shriners • Whitesboro, New York BUGLE NOTES An official publication of Ziyara Shriners Shrine Office: 315-732-5328 www.ziyarashriners.com Shrine Park Centre: 315-768-1340 PO Box 40, 8209 Halsey Road • Whitesboro Office Hours: M - Th 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. • Friday: Closed SHC Open Ambassador Born in Shanxi, China, Mahlia was severely burned in a house fire as an infant, leading to the September 15th loss of both her feet. At the Sportsman Raffle age of 3, she was adopted by her loving parents, Erienne Drawing Party and Kevin, who soon made Shrine Centre the choice to bring her to 2:00pm Shriners Hospitals for Children — Springfield for prosthetic services. September 19th Mahlia has an incredible connection with her prosthetist, Brock Candidate Night McConkey, because he is skilled in knowing which prosthetics are Shrine Centre going to be accommodating and “in fashion” for a growing girl. Each of her prosthetics caters to her lifestyle and liking. Whether it is 6:30pm patterned with butterflies, flowers, chalkboard, you name it, she has had it. To this day, Mahlia still reminisces about her favorite pair of prosthetics, which included a split toe design, allowing her to wear September 26th her favorite flip-flops. Since her first appointment, Mahlia has had one revision surgery and nearly 23 pairs of prosthetics. Stated Meeting and Ceremonial When she is not crushing sprints with her running blades at track Shrine Centre meets, Mahlia is fulfilling her competitive spirit through gymnastics, 6:30pm skiing, cheerleading or her all-time favorite sport, sled hockey. Mahlia’s care at the Springfield Shriners Hospital has allowed her to walk to the best of her ability and live her daily life with little to no November 23rd - trouble at all. She is thriving as an athlete, is a big jokester, and has December 1st a zest for life by finding enjoyment in each person she meets and experience she encounters. Mahlia is an aspiring photojournalist who FEZtival of Trees wants to travel the world. Masonic Care Community mESSaGE frOm ThE pOTENTaTE Nobles and Ladies, it has been a busy and productive summer! On June 30th, 42 nobles, ladies, and family members traveled to Nashville for the 2019 Imperial Session. Everyone had a fun time making incredible memories! We participated in the parade, toured the sites and enjoyed the fellowship during our Ziyara dinner gatherings. We concluded our week by viewing the largest 4th of July fireworks display in the United States. On July 27th, we had our Ziyara Family Picnic at the Shrine Center. We had perfect weather for the day. Over 65 Nobles, family and friends attended. The kids, young and old, enjoyed the bounce house and water balloons. We had plenty of food and fellowship. The evening ended with several families camping out with a camp fire, fireworks, and cocktails. Thank you to all who supported this event! Our most recent event was the Potentate’s Ball held on August 24th at Aqua Vino, in Utica. This was more than just a Ball to celebrate myself or Ziyara. We were there to celebrate you and all your superpowers that you bring to the Shrine. It was a wonderful evening with colorful attire, a great buffet, delicious desserts, and dancing. Steve Armstrong was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening with Mark Alvarado as the DJ. The evening continued past the scheduled time as many enjoyed the dancing and just couldn’t stop! On behalf of myself and my Lady Carolyn, we extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to all who joined us and helped us make a memorable night! We have concluded our parade season for the year. We attended the Do-Dah Days Parade in Ilion, the Honor America Days Parade in Rome and the Woodsmen Parade in Boonville. We had good showings for each of these parades and I would like to thank all who took time out of their busy personal schedules and participated. Fall is on our doorsteps and we need to turn our attention to the Sportsman Raffle.Tickets and posters are still available in the office. We have about a week left to sell tickets. Please continue to sell right up to the drawing day! The Sportsman Raffle drawings will be held on Sunday, September 15th. This is our 2nd biggest fundraiser of the year and we need your help supporting it. We have a membership candidate night scheduled for September 19th, at 6:30pm. Please bring any prospective candidates to meet the Shriners to find out more of what we are about. This is a good time to get petitions in for this Fall Ceremonial. Light refreshments will be provided. Our next Stated Meeting and Fall Ceremonial is scheduled for September 26th at 6:30pm. We hope to see the attendance grow from the last stated meeting, which was wonderfully attended. Unfortunately we have to cancel the Halloween/Super Hero party scheduled for October 26th due to scheduling conflicts. Please remember that our final and largest fundraiser of the year will be here before you know it. The FEZtival of Trees! The dates for this are November 23rd thru December 1st. Further information regarding the opportunities to help with this event will be coming soon. Enjoy the cool weather, changing leaves, pumpkin and apple everything!
