  • Covering Colinton, Longstone & Slateford]
Edinburgh’s Great War Roll of Honour Colinton District Great War Roll of Honour: Restricted [Covering Colinton, Longstone & Slateford] This portion of the Edinburgh Great War Roll of Honour is part of a much larger work that will be published over a period of time. It should also be noted that this particular roll is also a restricted one of Great War casualties giving basic details of each casualty: Name, Rank, Battalion/Ship/Squadron, Regiment/Service, Number. Special awards. Cause and date of death. Age. Place commemorated or buried. Birthplace. District of Edinburgh’s Great War Roll of Honour name is recorded in. The reason this roll is presently restricted is that we would like to invite and give the greater community the opportunity to fill out the story of each casualty, even helping identify casualties that appear on local memorials that cannot be clearly identified or have some details missing. These latter casualties appear in red with some having question marks in the area that needs to be clarified. It is also worth noting at this point that the names of some casualties appear on more than one district. The larger Roll of Honour [RoH] will also include information about those who served and survived and again the hope is that the wider community will come forward and share the story of their ancestors’ who served in the Great War, whether a casualty or survivor. The larger RoH will contain information such as: Name. Rank, Battalion/Ship/Squadron, Regiment/Service. Born when and where? Parent’s names and address.

Transport and Environment Committee 10.00am, Thursday, 7 December 2017 Slateford Road/Shandon Place Junction – Traffic Signal Priorities Item number 7.1 Report number Executive/routine Executive Wards 9 - Fountainbridge/Craiglockhart Council Commitments CC18, CC19 Executive Summary A petition was considered by the Transport and Environment Committee on 10 August 2017. The petition requested that the traffic signal priorities are reviewed at the junction of Slateford Road and Shandon Place. This report responds to the Committee request with: • the results of the group site visit; • a breakdown of collision history; and • potential options to reduce driver confusion at the junction. A preferred option has been identified which entails altering junction staging, simplifying signal heads and having an all stop pedestrian stage to reduce driver confusion. The viability of this option will be subject to detailed design. Report Slateford Road/Shandon Place Junction – Traffic Signal Priorities 1. Recommendations 1.1 It is recommended that the Transport and Environment Committee: 1.1.1 notes that the review of the site at Slateford Road/Shandon Place junction has been undertaken to observe traffic compliance with signals; 1.1.2 notes that the junction is not a priority for full refurbishment at present, according to the City of Edinburgh Council (the ‘Council’) agreed maintenance criteria; and 1.1.3 agrees that Option 3 (altering junction staging, simplifying signal heads and having an all stop pedestrian stage) should be progressed, subject to the successful outcome of detailed design. 2. Background 2.1 On 10 August 2017, the Transport and Environment Committee considered a petition of 150 signatories - "Redesign the traffic light priorities at Junction of Slateford Road and Shandon Place".

  • Hidden Treasures of the Water of Leith
No 56 Autumn 2012 Hidden Treasures of the Water of Leith The Water of Leith has a fascinating heritage and this summer we launched a special exhibition and family fun day to celebrate the unique archaeology, geology and industrial heritage of the river. Ulriika and Abi, who have joined us for the summer, spent months researching the history of the river from its source in the Pentland Hills down to Slateford. They created 10 information posters on the following subjects: The River’s Geology, A Tribal Land (early settlements along the river), Ancient Discoveries (celebrating the archaeology of the river), Historic Wonders (the special features, monuments and bridges of the river), and Mill Heritage, which included a collection of all the items made in the mills. Finally the history of the villages of Balerno, Currie, Juniper Green, Colinton and Slateford was revealed. The exhibition was opened on 22nd July along with a special fun day, which formed part of the British Festival of Archaeology. Around 100 visitors enjoyed the day and were treated to many fun ‘historical’ activities. We created a Bronze Age camp in the Dells complete with fire lighting from flint, an authentic shelter, hunting games and creating nettle string. Visitors could try their hand at Archaeology on a dig, metal detecting, and fossil hunting near Bogs Bridge. At the Centre visitors tried their hands at ancient crafts, grinding grain into flour and could dress up in Bronze-Aged costumes courtesy of Historic Scotland. We had expertise from Edinburgh Geological Society and Archaeology Scotland, and lots of help from our volunteers and staff who all helped to make it a really special day.

  • NEWSLETTER No 73 Summer 2019
NEWSLETTER No 73 Summer 2019 Our 30th Year proves to be the busiest on record as volunteer hours top 10,700 2018/19 was a landmark year for the Trust as we celebrated our ‘Pearl Anniversary’ but it has also proven to be remarkable for a number of other reasons. Each year we collect information about the groups who visit us and the work our volunteers do and on calculating last year’s statistics a wonderful pattern emerged. We were smashing all our targets! Learning is at the core of what we do and our Outdoor Learning Officer, Ruth (supported by the staff team) delivered sessions to 125 classes of children from schools across the city. Over 2700 pupils in total, a 16% increase on 2017/18. During the year we had a number of interesting projects which engaged large numbers of children including working with Forthview, St Josephs and Balgreen primary schools on special outdoor fundays. We also extended our work on field studies, with 20 High Schools now using our services Our Volunteer Team are a remarkable bunch. At the Visitor Centre they clocked up a huge 3493 hours, the equivalent of nearly 2 full time members of staff. Out on the river, during tasks and on patrols, they clocked up a record breaking 3791 hours, 41% more than last year. This increase is largely due to having Sandra on board to help Charlotte deliver more tasks, a record 123 in total. Youth and Community Group tasks also took a big leap forward rising by 37% to 89 tasks, achieving around 3500 hours.

  • School Nursing Service in Lothian
School Nursing Service in Lothian A Guide for Education, Social and Health Care Professionals Introducing the new School Nursing Service in Lothian We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the new school nursing role in Lothian. This leaflet is a guide to the new role for the school nursing team and the kind of services that will be provided. Why is there a new role for the School Nurse? Society is changing and so are the needs of children and young people. The Scottish Government (SG) has refocused the roles of School Nurses and Health Visitors in Scotland to ensure the workforce is prepared to meet the needs of today’s children. A Chief Executive Letter in 2013 from SG defined that School Nurses will focus on the 5-19 year old age group and Health Visitors on 0-5 years (or until a child goes to school). Previously there had been joint training and qualification in Public Health Nursing which was more generic in purpose. The new School Nursing role also relates to the Scottish Government’s Nursing 2030 vision which supports nurses to build working relationships with children and young people who will benefit from specialist support so they can work together to tackle problems at an early stage and prevent future health issues. Two pathfinders (Tayside & Dumfries & Galloway) tested the new model and this was positively evaluated leading to the new pathway being launched from 2018 across Scotland. School Nursing Role April 2018 2 This new model of School Nursing also supports the wider agenda to make Scotland the best place to grow up.
