Photo means “light” and synthesis means “to put together”. Photosynthesis means to put together with light. Photosynthesis is a process in which green plants use energy from the sun to transform water, carbon dioxide, and minerals into oxygen. Photosynthesis gives us most of the oxygen we need in order to breathe. We, in turn, exhale carbon dioxide that is needed by plants. Photosynthesis: Photosynthesis: Take a break and create a model of the “Photosynthesis Factory”. Chlorophyll: What is chlorophyll? Plants require light as a form of energy to develop and grow. The way this energy transfer happens is by using chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the green pigment in plants that is used to trap energy from the sun. Each green part of a plant has chlorophyll. Chlorophyll helps plants absorb light and convert it into sugar through photosynthesis. It serves a key purpose in the food chain, not only by making food for plants, but by creating energy in plants for animals and humans to eat. Take a break and do a Chlorophyll rubbing. Plant Parts: Take a break and observe a Flower. PLANT LIFE CYCLE Take a break and actually plant some seeds so you can observe the plant life cycle. Assemble your Seed Observation Journal. PLANT LIFE CYCLE #1 Fill in your sequencing sheet: 1. Plants start out as seeds. A seed is planted in the soil. When it gets what it needs (water, sunlight, minerals from the soil) it will germinate. PLANT LIFE CYCLE: #2 Fill in your sequencing sheet: 2. From the seed, a tiny new plant, called a seedling, grows. You will notice roots, a curled stem and very small leaves. PLANT LIFE CYCLE: #3 YOUNG ADULT 3. Then roots grow down into the soil and the stem uncurls upward. leaves get bigger. PLANT LIFE CYCLE: #4 ADULT 4. Finally, more leaves grow and blossoms form on the plant. It is now mature. PLANT LIFE CYCLE – POLLINATION PLANT LIFE CYCLE: PARTS OF A FLOWER PLANT LIFE CYCLE: What do the flower parts do? Petals – attract pollinators with their shape, color and smell Stigma– receives the pollen from a visiting pollinator (female parts) Anther – pollen from these will stick to visiting pollinators so it can be carried to other flowers (male parts, together called stamen) Filament – holds the anther in place so the pollinator can get to the pollen (male parts, together called stamen) Sepal – protects the flower when it’s in the bud Ovary/Ovules – where the new plant is formed(female parts) Style – the stalk that supports the stigma PLANT LIFE CYCLE: PARTS OF A FLOWER PLANT LIFE CYCLE: PARTS OF A FLOWER Take a break and view some real photos of parts of a flower. Take a break and make a fold and learn about the parts of a flower. PLANTS AND THE ENVIRONMENT Check out what each plant part does to help the environment…. Leaves, twigs, branches… Leaves, twigs and branches are good at absorbing sound and block erosion-causing rainfall. They also provide shade and reduce the wind speed. Roots, leaves and trunks… Roots, leaves and trunks provide habitat for birds, animals and insects. Roots… Roots stabilize the soil and prevent erosion. Plants… Plants release oxygen after photosynthesis. Animals and people need oxygen to breathe. Fruit and Leaves… Fruit and leaves provide food for animals and people.     1st GRADE SEEDS AND SEED DISPERSAL Summary: This lab is all about seeds. First, students take apart a swollen lima bean seed and find the seed coat, food storage area, and the plant embryo. Second, the students sort a bag of seeds into groups and notice that all seeds look different but have the same three seed parts. Finally, students sort seeds that are dispersed in different ways. Students identify seeds that are dispersed by wind, hitchiking, animals carrying and burying, and animals eating and pooping. Intended Learning Outcomes for 1st Grade: Objective 1: Framing questions. One seed classification bag per group, this should include 5-6 seeds of about 15 different seed types. Use old seeds from seed packets or spices or seeds or nuts you may have in your kitchen.

Leaves are green because they contain green pigment (chlorophyll). Without chlorophyll photosynthesis cannot occur. If we assume these statements are true, then what do we think if we see a white leaf? We may assume that a white leaf does not contain chlorophyll, and that therefore it cannot make food. So then ... How does a white leaf survive? Students may raise this question when they see a plant such as this variegated variety of bhendi (Talipariti tiliaceum), an ornamental shrub which has some green leaves, some leaves with asymmetric green and white areas, and some leaves which are completely white. A variegated bhendi (Talipariti tiliaceum) shrub - about 2.5 metres high. 1 An activity which is sometimes done in school in order “to prove that chlorophyll is required for photosynthesis” is to take a variegated leaf, remove its green pigment by dissolving it in alcohol, and then show that only the areas which were formerly green test positive for starch. However, this is a rather tedious procedure, and it actually does not prove that chlorophyll is required for photosynthesis, or even that photosynthesis is occurring. It merely indicates that only the green areas contain starch. It may even lead students to ask a question like, “Then why does a potato - which is not green - also contain starch?” Is the potato also doing photosynthesis? We can question whether starch is an indicator of photosynthesis.

    Finally Fall: Seed Dispersal: Part 2 In Seed Dispersal Part 2, find out three ways that seeds are dispersed from the initial seed producing plant: wind, water, and gravity. Seed Dispersal Part 1 focused on the movement of seeds from the parent plant to different areas of the environment and that gravity alone, wildlife and humans are often involved. Plants disperse their seeds throughout an ecosystem and this limits competition of necessary resources like sunlight as they grow and mature. Seed Dispersal by Wind Seed dispersal by wind is a very common mechanism. Use the space below to make predictions about how wind is involved in seed dispersal. Do you know any plant species where wind disperses their seeds? ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Wind is the main source of seed dispersal for many native plants. Have you ever seen a little yellow dandelion? Have you ever looked at that same flower and noticed that it has turned fluffy and white? The fluff you may have seen were the seeds of the dandelion! Generally, when flowers are at the end of their life cycle they will go to seed, which means the plant will use its energy to focus on reproduction. In the case of a dandelion, seeds are so light and fluffy, they are easily transported by the wind as it blows. Other factors can help the wind pick up the seeds. For example, if an animal walks into the dandelion that has gone to seed, the seeds may be released from the stalk of the plant. Seeds then can be transported by the wind even more effortlessly, having gotten a jump start on the process thanks to that animal.

    Corpse Flower Amorphophallus titanum What makes the corpse flower so special? The corpse flower is huge—it has the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world. An inflorescence is a cluster of multiple flowers that sometimes looks like a single flower. The flowers are located at the base of the spadix inside the spathe. There are hundreds of flowers in one inflorescence. How does it grow? The corpse flower stores energy in a huge underground stem called a “corm.” Each spadix year, the corm will produce either a leaf to increase the energy stores through photosynthesis or an inflorescence to produce seeds for reproduction. Since inflorescence such a large bloom requires lots of energy, it can take several years to several decades to store enough energy to bloom. The dramatic blooming process begins with the unfurling of the spathe and spathe revealing of the spadix. Once the bloom is fully open, it emits a rotting meat odor. It may remain in bloom for 24 to 48 hours, and then it will collapse quickly. What’s that smell? The corpse flower gets its name from the putrid scent it emits while in bloom. Some describe it as a combination of garlic, fish, diapers, and rotting meat. The stench serves to attract pollinators, such as carrion beetles and flies. Where in the world does the corpse flower come from? This plant is native to the tropical rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia, and was first known to science in 1878. In their natural habitat, corpse flower plants can grow up to 12 feet tall. Can I grow one at home? Amorphophallus titanum requires very special conditions, which most home owners cannot achieve, including warm day and night temperatures, high humidity, and lots of space.
