KICKERS SOCCER CLUB NEWSLETTER Issue 7 4 Spring Practices & Clinics 2015 *Spring practice sessions end the week of June 15th and Clinics end the week of June 8th* Team Practices and games are listed online on our website www.kickerssoccerclub.org. For more information on your team schedule. Clinics are offered for free to Kickers Soccer Club players. These sessions will be held during the week. We recommend attending clinics to help improve the individual player. Ball Mastery: develop footskills - skills, turns and tricks and when to use them during 1v1 situations in games. Develop comfortable first touch on the move and in each direction. Finishing (shooting): develop the techniques used when striking the ball on goal and how to finish in the box with limited time/touches during game situations. Goalkeeping: develop and enhance the techniques and actions needed to excel as a goal keeper, ball handling, shot stopping and positioning. Speed, agility and quickness (SAQ): sessions work players fast twitch muscle movement, coordination, core movement, plyometrics and balance. Generally for players aged 12-18 years. Any questions?     MARKETING OF PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER IN THE UNITED STATES THROUGH FEMINIST THEORIES by CHRISTOPHER HENDERSON (Under the Direction of James J. Zhang) ABSTRACT Despite the success of the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT), two women’s soccer leagues have quickly failed in the U.S. This doctoral dissertation examines the past and present of the marketing of professional women’s soccer in the United States emphasizing feminist themes to fulfill three objectives: (a) to critically examine the history of the marketing of women’s soccer in the United States to identify and gain a better comprehension of changes in theory and practice of marketing in women’s soccer in the U.S. over time; (b) to identify and explain the use of three feminist themes in the marketing of women’s soccer, specifically in the NWSL; and (c) to analyze the impact of these three feminist themes on the related marketing strategies used within in the NWSL in an effort to build a framework while also developing recommendations for marketing practitioners for the promotion and marketing of professional women’s soccer in the United States. The historical analysis segment revealed that the failure of the first two professional women’s soccer leagues in the United States were largely a result of poor resource allocation and an inability to connect with and retain fans, the media, and sponsors. The Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) burned through capital at an unsustainable rate and was unable to maintain the excitement of the 1999 Women’s World Cup, leading to microscopic television ratings and perennially falling attendance.

The 23 women on the USWNT and their coaches celebrating their World Cup victory in 2015 in Canada. The first Sunday of my 2016 Spring Break, I travelled from Knoxville, Tennessee to Nashville, Tennessee to see the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) play against France in the SheBelieves Cup. The game was played in the Tennessee Titan’s arena, Nissan Stadium. There were over 25,000 fans there to cheer on the USWNT, which broke the record for attendance at a U.S. Soccer event in the state of Tennessee. The stands were filled with fans chanting, banners, and flags waving in favor of a United States win. Pierce 2 The women’s national team has been popular the United States since their first game in 1985, but coming off a 2015 World Cup win in Canada the team’s popularity is soaring with old and new fans supporting them. After their World Cup victory, the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) held a parade for the team in New York City and set up a ten game victory tour around the country that featured ten different cities. The tour lasted five months in 2015 – August through December. Following this victory tour, the women’s national team held the SheBelieves Cup on their home soil.

Teams represent the following cities: Seattle, Portland, Chicago, NJ/NY, Rochester, Washington DC, and Boston. The ninth team, the Houston Dash, joined the League on December 12, 2013.
