The show is based on the characters of the Addams family created by Charles Addams in gag's mono-panel animations, which depict a macabre American family with an affinity for all things macabre. Although there are numerous film and television adaptations of Addams' cartoons, the musical is the first stage performance based on the characters. [1] The Addams family is also the first show produced by Elephant Theatrical Eyes. [2] After a trial in Chicago in 2009,[3] the musical opened on Broadway in April 2010. The original cast featured Nathan Lane as Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia. [4] Production closed on December 31, 2011, and a revised national tour of North America began in September 2011. The Addams family won several awards during its Broadway performance including a Drama Office Award for Outstanding Ensemble Design,[5] an External Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Set Design,[6] and the 2010 Drama Association Award for Outstanding Achievement in Musical Theatre Award (presented to Nathan Lane). [7] The show was nominated for two Tony Awards, among other nominations. [8] The British premiere of the Addams family was announced on 5 September 2016 and opened at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre in Edinburgh in April 2017 before embarking on a major UK tour. Development In 2007, producers announced that they had acquired the rights from the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation to create a musical adaptation of the Addams family on Broadway, and expected an opening during the 2009-2010 season after an out-of-town tryout. This was the first time charles addams' comic creations had been licensed to serve as the basis for a stage production. [1] The main producers of the musical were Stuart Oken and Roy Furman. [9] In addition to Oken and Furman, Vivek Tiwaly also joined the group of producers of the musical of the Addams family. [10] The Addams Foundation reportedly retained control over the content of the show and insisted that, instead of the plot from the Addams family's TV series or films, the production team devised an original musical based on in Addams animations. [11] Marshall Brickman and Rick Ellis got engaged to write the book and Andrew Lippa composed the score for the series. The theatre's unlikely founders Julian Crouch and Phelan McDermott were the original directors and designers, choreographed by Sergio Trujillo. [1] Crouch said that when brainstorming ideas for the show's overall appearance, he and McDermott turned to Uncle Fester's character for I wonder, if Fester was going to do a Broadway show, what kind of Broadway show would he do? [12] The partners described the result as an off-beat take on 19th century Gothic. [12] Some changes were made after the Chicago test. The songs Clandango, Passionate and True, At Seven, and Second Banana were replaced by When You're an Addams, Where Did We Go Wrong?, Morticia, and Just Around the Corner. The songs One Normal Night, Full Disclosure, Part 2, Crazy Than You, Move Award the Darkness, and Tango De Amor were re-written. [reference required] Broadway productions The show began previews on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on March 8, 2010, with an official premiere on April 8. [13] [14] Production was originally estimated to cost $10 million,[15] but the latest reports give the budget as $15 million. [16] The entire cast from the Chicago tryout was moved to Broadway. The creative team included directed by McDermott and Crouch, choreographed by Trujillo, lighting by Natasha Katz, puppets by Basil Twist, special effects by Gregory Meeh and orchestrations by Larry Hochman. [17] The show won both the Drama Office Award and the Critics Circle External Award for important set design but received no other major awards. [18] However, he won the Broadway.com Audience Awards for favorite new Broadway musical, favorite performance by a featured actor in a Broadway musical (Kevin Chamberlin), favorite breakthrough performance (Krysta Rodriguez), and favorite couple on stage (Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth). [19] A May 2011 article in Playbill reported that the show had so far raised over $62 million. [20] The show celebrated its 500th performance on June 16, 2011. [21] Playbill reported in May 2011 that plans for other international productions are ongoing. [20] Cassandra Peterson was in talks to take on the role of Morticia until producers decided to close the show at the end of the year. [22] Broadway production closed on December 31, 2011, after 35 previews and 722 performances. [23] National Tours A tour of the United States began in September 2011 at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre for the Performing Arts in New Orleans. [24] Tour stops included Atlanta, Miami, Boston, Hartford, St. Paul, Philadelphia, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Orlando, Florida, and San Diego. Most of these cities include those that are members of Elephant Eye Theatres and worked on the Addams family's broadway production and tour. [25] [26] The musical was also presented at the Ontario, Canada, at toronto's Center for the Arts during November 16-27, 2011. [27] [28] Douglas Sills and Sarah Gettelinger played Gomez and Morticia Adams, respectively. [29] The touring version has a new central plot conflict, new or revised or rearranged songs to replace old, fresh orchestrations and dance where where A second tour of North America, produced by Phoenix Entertainment, began in 2013, starring Jennifer Fogarty as Wednesday, KeLeen Snowgren as Morticia, Jesse Sharp as Gomez, Shaun Rice as Uncle Fester, and Sam Primak as Pugsley. After the second national tour, the Addams family was due to tour Asia. Most, if not all, of the 2nd National Tournament cast was set to perform on the Asian tour except for Sam Primatek as Pugsley, who was to be replaced by Connor Barth. Back in Chicago The Addams family returned to Chicago in a sit-down production at the Mercury Theater Chicago opening February 5, 2015, after a week of previews, and closing April 15. The production, which featured a tighter script after the National Tour and a more Chicago- oriented cast, was directed by L. Walter Stearns, a musical directed by Eugene Dizon, and choreographed by Brenda Didier; with a backdrop by Bob Knuth, lighting by Nick Belley, sound by Mike Ross, costumes by Frances Maggio and magic by Neil Tobin. The cast featured Karl Hamilton (Gomez), Rebecca Prescott (Morticia), Harter Clingman (Uncle Fester), Amanda Hartley (grandmother), Dara Cameron (Wednesday), Brennan Dougherty (Pugsley Addams), Jeff Diebold (Lurch), Jason Grimm (Mal Beineke), Cory Goodrich (Alice Beginke), and Henry McGinniss (Lucas Beginke). The show received unanimous bivalve reviews. Comic perfection in Mercury. It's a very good bet that the Addams family will haunt the mercury for the next few months (Chicago Sun-Times). [31] Much more relaxed and infinitely funnier. I enjoyed L. Walter Stearns Mercury Theatre production more than any of my previous visits with this family [including pre-Broadway tryout, Broadway, and National Tour production]. Relentless focus on laughter (Chicago Tribune). [32] An absolute delight! Best show I've seen so far this year (New City Chicago). [33] The production was honored with three 2015 Jeff Award nominations[34] and won outstanding production-music-medium size. [35] International Productions The first international production opened in March 2012 at Teatro Abril, Sao Paulo, Brazil, produced by T4F with Marisa Orth and Daniel Boaventura as the main cast. It closed in December 2012. [36] The same production began on 10 January 2013, in Vivo Rio, Rio de Janeiro. [37] [38] The Addams family had its European premiere on 29 September 2012, in Östgötateatern, Norrköping, Sweden. directed by Mathias Carlson and directed by Johan Siberg. Cast: Petra Nielsen (Morticia), Christian Zell (Gomez), Jenny Holmgren (Wednesday), Fabian Nikolajeff/Kalle Jansson (Pugsley), Jesper Barkselius (Fester), Gunnel (grandmother), Jan Unestam (Lurch), Carina Söderman (Alice), Sven Angleflod (Mal) and Linus Henriksson (Lucas)[39] The musical premiered at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney, Australia, from March 2013. The cast includes John Waters as Gomez Addams, Chloe Dallimore as Addams, Russell Dykstra as Uncle Fester, Teagan Wouters as Wednesday Addams and Ben Hudson as Lurch. [20] [40] [41] [42] The show closed on 9 June 2013. He had hoped to tour other Australian cities, but it is understood the show had struggled at the box office and those plans were cancelled. [43] The musical began its Argentine premiere at the Teatro Ópera in Buenos Aires, Argentina, starting on June 19, 2013. It was produced by T4F (Time for Fun), a Brazilian entertainment company. The cast included Gabriel Goity as Homero (Gomez), Julieta Díaz as Morticia Santiago Ríos as Tío Lucas (Uncle Fester), Gabi Goldberg as Abuela (grandmother), Alejandro Viola as Mauricio Beineke (Mal Beineke), Dolores Ocampo as Alice Beineke, Laura Esquivel as Merlina (Wednesday), Marcelo Albamonte as Largo (Lurch), and Marco Di Mónaco as Lucasine Beke. BARN THEATRE NEWS Volume 19 Issue 1 February 2015 PACEY, POLISHED, PROFESSIONAL AND SUCH GOOD FUN TOO, THE BARNSTORMERS THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE William Finn’s funny and, at times, touching music and lyrics make good companions to Rachel Sheinkin’s witty book offering an eclectic mix of characters and comedy for any group of intelligent performers to dive into. The result, from The Barnstomers, is nothing short of genius and was given even more added value when four members of the audience were press-ganged into swelling the numbers of onstage competitors to ten – blushes almost turned to fear when the unfortunate quartet even had to join in and compete, with hilarious results as the organisers made fun of them through a mix of ad-libbing and the show’s script. I would easily turn this review into an essay if I gave all nine actors the mentions and plaudits they all thoroughly deserve, so you’ll have to take it from me when I say the onstage chemistry between the whole ensemble (and it is very much an ensemble piece) is wonderfully evident in a display of great performances across the board …But I would be doing a real injustice if I didn’t at least mention the talents of Sadly I didn’t get to see the Donmar Warehouse production of the Elizabeth Skinner and Paul Longhurst as the Spelling Bee organisers, award-winning 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in 2011. Rona Lisa Peretti and V.P. Panch – as well as some very funny It was therefore, a huge relief that my first experience of this moments both together and individually, Skinner in particular also hilarious musical comedy was produced to such a high standard for brings a lovely vocal performance to her role.

  • November 19–20, 2020 32Nd Annual Festival of New Musicals 1
320nd NOVEMBER 19–20, 2020 32ND ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF NEW MUSICALS 1 FROM THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE FOR MUSICAL THEATRE’S PRESIDENT WELCOME TO OUR 32ND ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF NEW MUSICALS! I look forward to this journey every year: usually a physical journey to NYC to see old friends, meet new ones, and immerse myself in the exhilaration of NAMT’s Festival. This year, of course, will be different: I’ll travel to the world of the Festival while in Buffalo, but it will be just as eye-opening, poignant, enjoyable and provocative. I never know where the Festival will take me, but I know that during these two days I will feel a surprising and strong gamut of emotions. Not only will I be entertained and challenged, but I will also have perspectives and opinions reinforced one minute and completely altered the next. We’re delighted that you’re here to join us for these two days—truly just the beginning of the journey for these unique musical theatre pieces and their extraordinarily talented writers. I congratulate each of the writers who participated in this event and thank them for their creativity, intelligence, talent, and courage, which is the lifeblood of our artistic industry. We hope you’ll want to blaze a development path with them. Every year the Festival inspires many long-term relationships among writers, theatres, producers, directors and performers, and we expect this year will again initiate many partnerships, in new and varied ways. NAMT believes that the best way to encourage that ongoing development is to give our writers every possible opportunity to showcase their best work.

  • Where Are They Now? January 2017
WHERE ARE THEY NOW? JANUARY 2017 Well on Sunday October 30th a whole lot of them were at The Adelphi theatre helping the company to celebrate its fortieth anniversary led by JASPER BRITTON (1976-7) the genuine ‘Father of the House’ for it was he who, aged 12, walked onto the stage erected in a tent outside St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh and spoke the first words of the company’s first ever production, THE BALLAD OF SALOMON PAVEY, which went on to win a coveted Scotsman Fringe First Award and, as a result, was invited to The Young Vic the following year as part of the official Queen’s Silver Jubilee Celebrations. Later that year it was televised by ATV and published by Oxford University Press. To open the Gala Concert, that same opening scene was re-enacted at The Adelphi with Jasper playing the same role – and he was word perfect! Jasper has just completed a run at The Haymarket Theatre in THE LIBERTINE and to our delight has also accepted our invitation to become the Honorary Chairman of the new FRIENDS OF THE NYMT, which we urge you all to join. JASPER also kindly attended the hugely successful Christmas Concert at St John’s, Smith Square on December 17th, as did AMY NUTALL (1996 – 99) who sang Jason Robert Brown’ s Christmas Lullaby from SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD quite beautifully. Also kindly giving up their time to join the party were TOM CHAMBERS (1990 -97) fresh from CRAZY FOR YOU at the Watermill Theatre in Newbury, who had to rush off the stage and drive overnight to Cardiff where he was shooting CASUALTY at 7.00 the next morning, and ASHLEY DAY (1998-2002), soon to be seen in AN AMERICAN IN PARIS at The Dominion, dancing beautifully with LAYLA HARRISON (1993-4) to OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING with the NYMT’s original Curly, DOMINIC TIGHE (1993-9) re-creating the role.
