Her winning time of 1:13:49 on Saturday at Middle Park was actually faster than her winning time on 2018 (1:14:27) and set a new Victorian Masters W45-49 record, as well as a new VRWC club record for that age group. An Australian rep at both World Walking Cup and IAAF World Champs, Kelly is still one of our top walkers at the Open level. • 28 year old Rhydian is a walker at the peak of his powers. Earlier this year, he set PBs of 39:48 (10km) and 1:20:19 (20km) and he looks poised to earn a second Olympic berth, after his successful 2016 walk in Rio. He won this championship in 2017 with 1:07:07 and won it again this year with an even faster 1:06:43 – and did not raise a puff. -

Jemima (6 th) and Rhydian (8th) led the way with top- 8 finishes, Declan and Rhydian recorded PBs and Bec, the youngest competitor in the women’s 20km, walked excellently, just like all the others. We are so proud of them all. ◦ Declan Tingay Men’s 20km Race Walk 22 17th 1:24:00 PB ◦ Kyle Swan Men’s 20km Race Walk 22 36th 1:27:55 ◦ Rhydian Cowley Men’s 20km Race Walk 30 8th 3:52.01 PB ◦ Jemima Montag Women’s 20km Race Walk 23 6th 1:30:39 ◦ Katie Hayward Women’s 20km Race Walk 21 37th 1:38:11 ◦ Rebecca Henderson Women’s 20km Race Walk 20 38th 1:38:21 Jemima, Kyle, Rhydian, Declan, Bec and Katie celebrate their successful Olympics, as the Games drew to a close last weekend (photo Amanda Montag) 1 WHAT’S COMING UP • With NSW, QLD and Victoria still in lockdown and with SA just coming out of lockdown, it is a time of great uncertainty here in Australia. -

This week the great performances continue. Here are the ones which especially caught my eye • 39 year old Kelly Ruddick won the Victorian 5000m walk championship on Friday evening with a 21 sec PB of 21:50.13. This propels her to 13th on our Australian all-time list and is yet another superb PB for Kelly. • 18 year old Jesse Osborne took silver in the men's Victorian 5000m walk championship on Friday evening with a 23 sec PB of 20:00.56. This is only 5 days after his big 20km walk in Hobart (same for Kelly above) and confirms his meteoric rise through the men's ranks. • 21 year old Regan Lamble made up for her DNF in Hobart with a top walk in China last Friday, stopped the clock in an A qualifying time of 1:34:03.This puts her right back into contention for this year's World Championships team. -

Competing for Australia in her first ever IAAF World Athletics Championship in Doha, she powered through to 10th place in the women’s 20km championship in a time of 1:36:54. The race was staged in torrid overnight conditions in the tropical heat and humidity of the desert city. Speaking after the race, the 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist said: “Thanks to the expertise around us, we were very well prepared for the conditions, so it did ease the pain a little. It was really different to any race I’ve done before, it was one about patience and holding back, rather than chasing. This was my first World Champs, so there were a lot of unknown factors, including that it was at midnight and in this heat and humidity. Looking ahead to Tokyo, which is going to be similarly hot and humid, it does instil some confidence that my body can withstand these conditions. Well done Jemima! Jemima in action in Doha and with her coach Brent Vallance WHAT’S COMING UP • For Victorians, our summer season will kick off on Saturday with the first round of the Athletics Victoria Shield League (AVSL).
