After juliet sharman macdonald pdf Continue After Juliet is a play written by Scottish playwright Charman Macdonald. It was commissioned for the 1999 NT Shell Connections program, in which regional youth theatre groups compete for short plays by famous playwrights. The basic premise of the play, following from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet What happened to Capulet and Montague after Romeo and Juliet died?. The situation after Juliet is described as Verona. Or it could be Edinburgh, Dublin, Birmingham, New York or Liverpool. It could be 1500, 1900, 2000 or 3000. The only place where After Juliet cannot be installed is Glasgow, as one of the characters, Rona, is originally from Glasgow and away from home. McDonald's daughter Keira Knightley appeared in the production of NT Connections Youth Centre Heatham House, which reached the regional final. It continues to be performed by youth groups around the world. The plot of the play focuses on Rosalyn, Juliet's cousin and former flame Romeo. Ironically, Rosalyn was in love with Romeo, but played hard to get. Tormented by the loss of love, Rosalyn became a sullen, poisonous woman. She actively strives to be chosen as the Princess of Cats and to manage the Capulet family. Meanwhile, Capulet and Montague obeyed Prince Eskal and called for a truce. The truce quickly descends into farce as both sides continue to rage against each other. Among the upheavals of the more doomed love springs between Benvolio Montague and Rosalyn. Benvolio warns Valentin (Mercutio's twin brother) to stay away from her if he knows what's right. The climax of the play comes during the election to determine whether Rosalyn or Petruchio (Tybalt's brother) will succeed Tybalt as a prince or a cat princess. Elections have no results, and the fate of the truce remains open. The youth, stage version of the 2009 show included Valentina as Mercutio's twin sister; it added an additional storyline where Valentin is in love with Benvolio and jealous of Rosalyn. Benvolio's final scene ends with Valentin running away from the stage after his refusal. At the time I assumed that this play was responsible for the excess of Benvolio/Rosalyn Romeo and Juliet spin-offs (especially in YA) because it was the earliest work I could find that paired these two characters romantically. I'm not so convinced that right now my younger self doesn't consider the fact that the romantic options in Romeo Shakespeare and Juliet are pretty scarce, and Benvolio and Rosalyn years ago, I swore that I would eventually find a copy of After Juliet and read it. At the time I assumed that this play was responsible for the excess of Benvolio/Rosalyn Romeo and Juliet spin-offs (especially in YA) because it was the earliest work I could find that paired these two characters romantically. I'm not so convinced that right now my younger self doesn't consider the fact that romantic options in Shakespeare's Romeo and rather meagre, and and and Rosalyn are basically the only two characters who are young, unattached, and survive the play. As it turns out, rosalyn and Benvolio's relationship (which is mostly one-sided) is such a small part of this short but fascinating work. It is rather a study of Rosalin's thoughts after the tragedy and, more broadly, the thoughts of Verona as a whole. Most scenes consist of characters discussing the events of Shakespeare's play and trying to understand them - who should be blamed for all the recent deaths? Should the two families remain at peace, or is it a fruitless effort? Did Romeo and Juliet really love each other? It's certainly respectable enough- taking on Shakespeare is not an easy task, but MacDonald appropriately channels the wild (often contradictory) emotions of teenage characters and the whole text boils with the anxiety and resentment that is baked into the very foundation of Verona. Although this play wisely does not attempt to imitate Shakespearean language or meter, it is written in a format that runs the line between the poetry of Romeo and Juliet and the modern language of today. I am well aware of some of my other retellings of Shakespeare that it is quite difficult to do; After Juliet neither feels wildly anachronistic, nor as a lofty attempt to imitate Victorian English. The plot of After Juliet is quite rarefied. Frankly, it's more of an extended epilogue to Romeo and Juliet (albeit with an cast of almost exclusively new characters) than his own narrative. I didn't mind it, but it stops the game from a stronger identity of its own. I wasn't a big fan of most of the characters: Rosalyn, the clear pride and joy of the text, was remarkably underdeveloped after everything I had heard about this work (although I admit that all her lines and demeanor can certainly be backed up by a dynamic performance) and Benvolio (the only real character value in this play, which also had a significant role in Romeo and Juliet) was depressingly reduced to nothing more than her dog. However, this may well be my retelling of the bias in the game: I was so in love with Rosalyn and Benvolio Melinda Taub in Still Star-Crossed (a book, not a TV series of the same name) that they somehow became my quintessential version of the characters, and it's possible that I would post Juliet's interpretation of the characters more if I hadn't been subjected to so many other pre-release versions. Despite its brevity, After Juliet is an intriguing creation with plenty to unpack. It's a pretty grim look at post-Romeo and Juliet Verona, but it's the gloom that deserves, given the story from which it originates. Since the play is so short, the amount of useless filler it contains, a few (I know that this script was created with young teen casts in mind, so I can't help but wonder if some of the more pointless characters and conversations just exist to give more performers something to do). But the heart of history is vivid and questioned, and the ideas and characteristics set lead to something more than a quick, thoughtless continuation of a familiar work. He left me wanting more from him, but maybe it was the whole point. Four stars. ... more #En 3 points - The courage of an unlikely sequel: writing a sequel to Romeo and Juliet is by far Shakespeare's most famous work, adapted a thousand times and never equal, would seem suicidal for more than one season author - only for this already after Juliet deserves a look! replace Juliet and Romeo, whose shadow will hang over the entire room - cursed lovers #En 3 points - Courage is hardly a sequel: to write a sequel to Romeo and Juliet, of course, Shakespeare's most famous work, adapted a thousand times and never equal to the seemingly suicide of more than one experienced author - only for this already, After Juliet deserves a look! The play sheds light on the fate of some people who are left suspended at the end of the tragedy, style fluid and pleasant), he catches fish, including too many characters, some of which are straight ersatz original characters - we, however, will be grateful to Charman MacDonald for his melancholy finale on his own score, without a sharp excess or forced happy ending, reminding that the result should not be limited to just these two possibilities.
