The ertification may be used as an indication of skill level in South Carolina cities that require trades certification before issuing licenses and permits. This certification should not be confused with the South Carolina Contractors Licensing Board licenses. PSI (800.733.9267) administers the examinations for the S.C. Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. The Board requires licensing by examination or waiver for contractors bidding on a commercial job in excess of $5,000. It will waive its examination requirements for holders of the aster electrician and master plumber certifications if the candidate passed examination after December 1990. For candidates who pass the A mechanical examination after September 7, 2013, the Board will also waive its requirements for packaged equipment and air conditioning systems exams. certifications also should not be confused with the S.C. Residentia Contractors License. The Commission will waive its examination requirements for electrical and plumbing licenses if a tradesman already holds an Association master certification card in the appropriate trade. The Board of Coal Mining Examiners (BCME) may require certification of persons who work in coal mines and persons whose duties and responsibilities in relation to coal mining require competency, skill or knowledge in order to perform consistently with the health and safety of persons and property. The purpose of the electrical repairman’s section is to assist an applicant who possesses one-year electrical experience in underground coal mining in obtaining an Underground Electrical Repairman certification in accordance with the regulations for the BCME’s certification requirements. Applicants may be given six months credit for electrical educational training from a college, technical school, or vocational school. In addition, each applicant shall pass examinations in first aid and gas detection. The purpose of the maintenance foreman’s section is to assist the electrical repairman who possesses three years of electrical experience in underground coal mining in obtaining a Maintenance Foreman certification. Knowledge of the material in the repairman’s and maintenance foreman’s sections is needed to prepare for the examination. -

Consultant’s Corner: Electrical Room Space Requirements Electrical room space requirements The space requirements for standby and emergency power systems do not rank at the top of an architect's design list. Consequently, service personnel can find themselves in tight quarters when these power systems are jammed into areas that meet only minimum safety requirements and don't take serviceability into account. Building service equipment must have an advocate early in the design process. It is far easier and less expensive to plan for adequate space in the design phase than to compromise on unit size and retrofit equipment to fit in cramped areas. Basic room requirements Minimum requirements set for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in the National Electric Code (NEC) is that a person must be able to complete service duties with enclosure doors open and for two people to pass one another. If maintenance must be done at the rear of the cabinet, similar access space must be available. The NEC also requires 3 to 4 feet (1m to 1.3m) of aisle space between live electrical components of 600 volts or less, depending on whether live components are on one or both sides of the aisle. This requirement hold even if components are protected by safety enclosures or screens. Installations over 600 volts require even wider aisle space, from 3 feet (1m) to as much as 12 feet (4m) for voltages above 75kV. Service rooms with 1,200 amps or more require two exits in case of fire or arcing. Because transformers vary, make sure minimum wall clearances are met as specified by the manufacturer.
