25 years of Eastenders – but who is the best loved character? Submitted by: 10 Yetis PR and Marketing Wednesday, 17 February 2010 More than 2,300 members of the public were asked to vote for the Eastenders character they’d most like to share a takeaway with – with Alfie Moon, played by actor Shane Ritchie, topping the list of most loved characters. Janine Butcher is the most hated character from the last 25 years, with three quarters of the public admitting they disliked her. Friday marks the 25th anniversary of popular British soap Eastenders, with a half hour live special episode. To commemorate the occasion, the UK’s leading takeaway website www.Just-Eat.co.uk (http://www.just-eat.co.uk) asked 2,310 members of the public to list the character they’d most like to ‘have a takeaway with’, in the style of the age old ‘who would you invite to a dinner party’ question. When asked the multi-answer question, “Which Eastenders characters from the last 25 years would you most like to share a takeaway meal with?’, Shane Richie’s Alfie Moon, who first appeared in 2002 topped the poll with 42% of votes. The study was entirely hypothetical, and as such included characters which may no longer be alive. Wellard, primarily owned by Robbie Jackson and Gus Smith was introduced to the show in 1994, and ranked as the 5th most popular character to share a takeaway with. 1.Alfie Moon – 42% 2.Kat Slater – 36% 3.Nigel Bates – 34% 4.Grant Mitchell – 33% 5.Wellard the Dog – 30% 6.Peggy Mitchell – 29% 7.Arthur Fowler – 26% 8.Dot Cotton – 25% 9.Ethyl Skinner – 22% 10.Pat Butcher – 20% The poll also asked respondents to list the characters they loved to hate, with Janine Butcher, who has been portrayed by Rebecca Michael, Alexia Demetriou and most recently Charlie Brooks topping the list of the soaps most hated, with nearly three quarters of the public saying listing her as their least favourite character.

  • 20 February 2015
20 FEBRUARY 2015 30 years to the day EastEnders was first broadcast, one of EastEnders true icons, Kathy Beale returned to the show in a LIVE scene in last night’s episode in the UK, which will air in Australia on the 4th March on UKTV at 6.15pm. Last seen in 2000 before returning to South Africa, viewers believed that Kathy was killed in a car crash. However when Kathy comes home to Walford later this year, viewers will learn where Kathy has been and why she has stayed away so long… Played by Gillian Taylforth, Kathy appeared in the very first episode of EastEnders on the 19th February 1985. As one of the original cast, Gillian soon found herself at the heart of some of the soaps most memorable episodes, creating a character that has never been forgotten in EastEnders history. Storylines included her relationship and subsequent turbulent marriage to Phil Mitchell and the rape of Kathy by Wilmott Brown. Kathy’s return has been shrouded in secrecy. To keep her return under wraps the scenes were shot live on location to prevent her being seen prior to her episode transmitting. Talking about her return to EastEnders, Gillian said “When Dominic approached me with his plan, I was so shocked I got into my car and burst into tears! ‘Kathy’ has always been so close to my heart and it’s absolutely wonderful to be returning to the show and reprising the role” Dominic Treadwell-Collins, Executive Producer said “I have always made my feelings on Kathy Beale and Gillian Taylforth very clear – she is part of EastEnders history, mother to Ian and Ben and one of the most important and iconic television characters on British television.

  • Dear Facilitator
Dear facilitator, Welcome back to Drillosophy: a new educational video series combining contemporary music culture with social science to help young people think more critically about their world. It aims to be fun, authentic and — most importantly — transformative for its audience. Drillosophy has been borne-out of two things. First is an urgent recognition that COVID-19 and the lockdown of Spring/Summer 2020 has placed a growing strain on educators’ ability to teach, connect with and care for teenagers stuck at home. This is especially true for professionals working with young people from low-income or cramped households, those who do not have access to a laptop, and those who are already disillusioned with, or feel excluded from, school life. Second is our broader, long-term motivation to leverage cutting-edge digital technology, a deep-rooted understanding of youth culture and applied social science to affect change in the British education system. Drillosophy resources are neither exhaustive or the finished product. But we hope they will empower you to have a meaningful, co-investigative dialogue with young people — during this difficult time, and beyond. We are aware that, at present, episodes, resources and their references are male-dominated. We are actively trying to catch and hold the attention of the hardest-to-reach boys and young men for legitimate reasons (e.g. their disproportionate rates of exclusion from school and incarceration). But we are working on making our work more gender-inclusive. Please watch this space. Contact us on [email protected] if you have any questions, feedback or means of supporting us.

  • 22 Eastenders and the Manufacture of Celebrity Anthony
EastEnders and the Manufacture of Celebrity Anthony McNicholas Communication and Media Research Institute University of Westminster Keywords: BBC, celebrity, publicity, professionalism, private lives, tabloid press Abstract When EastEnders launched in February 1985 it represented a new approach by the BBC to programme making in many ways. One of these was publicity. Traditionally, the BBC put little effort into programme promotion but for EastEnders a much more professional approach was adopted and more resources employed. In part the publicity was based on the real life histories of the actors involved, many of whom had been cast because they had similar backgrounds to the characters they played. However, the full-blooded entry of the BBC, the UK’s largest cultural producer into the business of publicity was to have unforeseen consequences, as the tabloid press, following a logic of its own created the kind of feeding frenzy around the actors’ private lives with which we are so familiar today. The launch of EastEnders, it is argued, represents therefore a significant moment in recent British cultural history as the private lives of relatively minor characters, as much as their on screen personas became public property. Introduction Social phenomena such as celebrity culture are not uniform across the globe though they may be present very widely. They are inflected differently, and ‘have numerous points of origin, numerous points of change’ (Turner 2004, 12) in the various places where they occur depending on the nature of the society out of which they both come and inform. In the UK, we ‘celebrate’ if that is the word, certain individuals or classes of people in our own distinct way.
