Only a student whose nomination has been sent by their public school system, charter school, special school or private school to the Office of the North Carolina Governor’s School may audition. Each student will receive an official audition invitation letter in January. INSTRUCTIONS: The audition consists of two parts: Solo Performance and Sight-Reading. Other important details are at http://www.ncgovschool.org/nomination/instrumental or Pages 7- 8 of the Nomination Packet. All nominees must bring their own instrument. (For percussion nominees, we will provide a xylophone, a marimba, and a set of four timpani for those who wish to play these instruments as part of their audition. Nominees are expected to bring their own sticks and mallets, snare drum and stand, and timpani stool, as applicable.) All nominees are to perform unaccompanied. All nominees will choose, practice and perform one solo from this list of instrument- specific selections, not to exceed two minutes – SEE BELOW. Nominees must play a piece from their list, not that of a different instrument. Percussion nominees must play solos on at least two of the following: snare drum, mallet percussion, and timpani. Percussionists may perform on all three. Each solo (or portion thereof) should not exceed two minutes. Percussionists auditioning on timpani should bring a tuning fork or pitch pipe and be prepared to tune without electronic devices. Cello and bassoon nominees are not necessarily required to select a solo performance piece that includes tenor clef. However, the sight-reading will include excerpts with tenor clef; students should prepare accordingly. Nominees should consult with their music teachers or band directors to choose the piece that best displays their technical and musical abilities. Nominees must bring one original and one copy of their selection to auditions. The nominee will use the original and the judge will use the copy. Nominees arriving for auditions with only the original of their selection must be prepared to play by memory. NO EXCEPTIONS CAN BE MADE. In addition to those from music teachers and/or band directors, many musical pieces are available online. Some helpful websites are: http://www.imslp.org for ‘public domain’; http://www.jwpepper.com for fee-based pieces. Classics 1: Program Notes The Sights and Sounds of Stockton: Cityscape John Wineglass and San Joaquin Delta College media students In accordance with its mission to inspire joy and build community through music—and with the aim of generating community pride and awareness through art—the Stockton Symphony teamed up with award-winning composer John Wineglass and San Joaquin Delta College media students under the direction of Adriana Brogger and Kirstyn Russell to create a project titled The Sights and Sounds of Stockton. The Delta College media students, all of whom are from the area and live in the various quadrants of our city, fanned out into the community to gather pictures and videos of their daily environment. They brought the raw footage to class and collaborated to edit the “sights” of Stockton into a feature approximately ten to twelve minutes long. Wineglass visited Stockton several times to get a feel for the area, and he worked with the students on the overall scope of the project as well as details of compilation to achieve a compelling outcome. He then composed the accompanying symphonic score for tonight’s live performance with the Stockton Symphony. This week he has also been meeting with composition students to discuss the composition process and how a composer works with visual components, and he engaged in a public forum with students and members of our community to discuss his work on this project. Winner of three Daytime Emmy Awards and recipient of four additional Emmy nominations, John Wineglass has performed on five continents, before five U.S.

  • ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: COMPOSITIONS for FLUTE BY
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: COMPOSITIONS FOR FLUTE BY AMERICAN STUDENTS OF NADIA BOULANGER Jessica Guinn Dunnavant, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Professor William Montgomery School of Music Throughout the twen tieth century, young American composers made a pilgrimage across the Atlantic Ocean to study their craft with Nadia Boulanger (1887- 1979). Many of them wrote substantial, interesting works for flute, and this dissertation focuses on performances of a selection of those compositions. Boulanger’s life is well documented, as is her reputation for helping her students find their own musical voices. In this project she serves as a lens through which three generations of American composers may be viewed. This to pic brings together a wide variety of flute music in almost every style imaginable. A selection of music to perform was made because the amount of music far exceeds the amount of available performance time. A list of Nadia Boulanger’s American students was primarily derived from the website nadiaboulanger.org and from composers listed in the two editions of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. These lists are far from comprehensive and other notable flute composers have been added. The followin g is an alphabetical list of the works that were performed: Alexander’s Monody, Amlin’s Sonata , Bassett’s Illuminations, Berlinski’s Sonata , Carter’s Scrivo in Vento , Cooper’s Sonata , Copland’s Duo, Dahl’s Variations on a Swedish Folktune, Diamond’s Sonata , Erb’s Music for Mother Bear, Finney’s Two Ballades , Glass’s Serenade, Kraft’s A Single Voice , La Montaine’s Sonata , Lewis’s Monophony I, Mekeel’s The Shape of Silence , Piston’s Sonata , Pasatieri’s Sonata , Rorem’s Mountain Song, and Thomson’s Sonata .

  • Style and Performance Considerations in Three Works Involving Flute by Joan Tower
Style and Performance Considerations in Three Works Involving Flute by Joan Tower: Snow Dreams , Valentine Trills , and A Little Gift by TAMMY EVANS YONCE (Under the Direction of Angela Jones-Reus and David Haas) ABSTRACT Joan Tower is a highly regarded contemporary composer who is known for her early serial style and subsequent organic style. Her compositional process is most frequently a collaborative one; a performer herself, she prefers to work with the musicians for whom she is writing. In addition to her Hexachords for solo flute (1972) and Flute Concerto (1989), which are her most commonly studied flute works, she has also written seventeen other chamber or solo works involving flute. This document contains a biography of the composer and an analysis of three chamber and solo works involving flute: Snow Dreams , Valentine Trills, and A Little Gift . A listing of Tower’s chamber and solo works involving flute and an interview with the composer are included as appendices. In addition to identifying formal aspects of the works, specific musical elements that are most salient to each work will be discussed. One of these elements in particular, density, will be analyzed in relation to how it creates or dispels intensity. Tower often employs the same compositional features in all three works to create this feeling of motion versus stasis, which is well illuminated through the analysis of the most salient musical elements. INDEX WORDS: Joan Tower, Snow Dreams , Valentine Trills , A Little Gift , A Gift, Flute, Chamber Music, Solo Music
