Dabney, Melina Kristine (BA/MA Film Studies) Re-mixing Old Character Tropes on Screen: Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, and the New Femininity Thesis directed by Professor Melinda Barlow While there is a substantial amount of scholarship on the depiction of African American women in film and television, this thesis exposes the new formations of African American femininity on screen. African American women have consistently resisted, challenged, submitted to, and remixed racial myths and sexual stereotypes existing in American cinema and television programming. Mainstream film and television practices significantly contribute to the reinforcement of old stereotypes in contemporary black women characters. However, based on the efforts of African American producers like Shonda Rhimes, who has attempted to insert more realistic renderings of African American women in her recent television shows, black women’s representation is undergoing yet another shift in contemporary media.

TASHA SMITH BIO Tasha Smith is a multifaceted actress whose work brings style and intensity to the subjects she plays on the big and small screens. H-Film CFP: Urban Netherworlds: Noir and Neo-Noir NY and LA in Film (Abstracts 5/15/16) Discussion published by Cynthia Miller on Monday, April 4, 2016 Call for Contributors Urban Netherworlds: Noir and Neo-Noir New York and Los Angeles in Film (under contract) Film noir is one of the most intensely studied cinematic genres, yet Mark Shiel remarks that while numerous studies have helped define the genre in thematic, stylistic, and technical terms, “they have engaged very little with the local geography of film noirs, whether set in Los Angeles, New York, or other cities.” Yet it is hard to think of another genre where the identity of a particular city or neighborhood or even street carries equal diegetic weight. The symbiotic screen relationship between New York and Los Angeles in noir and neo-noir is reflected in the work of actors such as Robert De Niro, Roy Scheider, Al Pacino, and directors such as William Friedkin, Sidney Lumet, Martin Scorsese, John Cassavettes, and Roman Polanski. Kathryn Bigelow puts Jamie Lee Curtis at risk in New York Blue( Steel) and then does the same thing to Angela Bassett in Los Angeles (Strange Days). In Brian De Palma’s Body Double Melanie Griffith is menaced by a Hollywood killer with a penchant for disguises and power tools; in Jane Campion’sIn the Cut Meg Ryan is stalked by a murderer who may be a member of the NYPD. She was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and moved to New Jersey when she was in her 50’s (in the 1980’s). She is an ani- mal lover and had many birds, “mutts,” a Boston terrier, and a Jardine parrot named “Squeaky,” who was her favorite. She worked as a Rate Clerk for Conrail for 43 years. After retirement, she vol- unteered at Woodford Cedar Run for about 15 years and would take baby squirrels home to care for them. Beverly’s favorite color is blue and her favorite food is fried shrimp with coleslaw. She has spent a lot of time trav- eling with her friends and family. Other then traveling, some of her favorite activities include Bingo, going outside, watching birds and admiring flowers/nature. Beverly’s favorite place to travel to is Las Vegas, she would love to be there now! One of her favorite teams is the Phillies baseball team. AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA CINEMA AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA The history of the African-American Cinema is a harsh timeline of racism, repression and struggle contrasted with film scenes of boundless joy, hope and artistic spirit. Until recently, the study of the "separate cinema" (a phrase used by historians John Kisch and Edward Mapp to describe the segregation of the mainstream, Hollywood film community) was limited, if not totally ignored, by writers and researchers. The uphill battle by black filmmakers and performers, to achieve acceptance and respect, was an ugly blot on the pages of film history. Upon winning his Best Actor Oscar for LILLIES OF THE FIELD (1963), Sidney Poitier accepted, on behalf of the countless unsung African-American artists, by acknowledging the "long journey to this moment." This emotional, heartbreaking and inspiring journey is vividly illustrated by the latest acquisition to the Belknap Collection for the Performing Arts - THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA COLLECTION. The valuable research material, housed in this collection, includes over 300 pressbooks (illustrated campaign and advertising catalogs sent to theatre owners), press kits (media packages including biographies, promotional essays and illustrations), programs and over 1000 photographs and slides. The journey begins with the blatant racism of D.W. Griffith's THE BIRTH OF A NATION (1915), a film respected as an epic milestone, but reviled as the blueprint for black film stereotypes that would appear throughout the 20th century. Researchers will follow African-American films through an extended period of stereotypical casting (SONG OF THE SOUTH, 1946) and will be dazzled by the glorious "All-Negro" musicals such as STORMY WEATHER (1943), ST.LOUIS BLUES (1958) and PORGY AND BESS (1959).
