\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////page 17 TPAC PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Broadway is back in historic fashion. For the first time, we are featuring a musical production designed and built right here in Music City. Studio Tenn Theatre Company’s original production of Evita, produced in collaboration with the Tennessee Performing Arts Center and starring Eden Espinosa (Rent, Wicked) and Tony Award winner Anthony Crivello (Kiss of the Spiderwoman, Evita, Les Misérables), launches our 2016-17 HCA/TriStar Health Broadway at TPAC season, September 9-18. This ground-breaking partnership with Studio Tenn represents new steps for our organizations and celebrates the region’s creative capacity to produce Broadway- caliber shows that can match or exceed those dazzling audiences in New York. Featuring a mix of Broadway veterans, award winners, and top-tier talent from Nashville, Evita promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for musical theatre lovers. Those same theatre lovers are rejoicing that Nashville is among the early stops for the 20th anniversary celebration of Rent, Jonathan Larson’s original rock musical that forever changed American theatre in 1996. This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning masterpiece continue s to speak loudly and defiantly across generations. I’m exceedingly proud of the high production and artistic value of every show this season. Each is exceptional Eden Espinosa as Evita, photo by Anthony Matula of MA2LA entertainment, from audience favorites like The Sound of Music, Rent, and Riverdance to contemporary hits like The Book of Mormon, Something Rotten!, and The CREATING A NEW AMERICAN Bodyguard, newly adapted for the stage from the hit film. In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer named Jonathan Larson opened on Broadway and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning masterpiece returns to the stage with Rent – 20th Anniversary Tour, a vibrant new touring production that plays the Tennessee Performing Arts Center’s Andrew Jackson Hall for a one-week engagement on October 18-23, 2016. Winner of the 1996 Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama – one of only six musicals to win both – Rent is a re-imagining of Puccini’s La Bohème and follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. “Ground-breaking in its debut, this unforgettable story of family and community continues to resonate today,” said Kathleen O’Brien, TPAC’s president and chief executive officer. “We’re excited to present this powerful piece of art again and allow a new generation of audiences to connect with the diverse characters, stirring lyrics, and Broadway anthems such as ‘Seasons of Love.’” With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity still speaks loudly and defiantly to audiences all over the world, reminding us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters — love.
