With the emergence of a start-up technology community, a flourishing arts and cultural scene, and the regeneration of its town centre, the future is bright. The town has enjoyed a rich history. It was once the countryside retreat of archbishops and their households, a stop-off on the road from Lambeth Palace to Canterbury, and has hosted the likes of Henry III, VI and VIII, as well as Elizabeth I. It is also home to the country’s oldest market, Surrey Street Market, which has been trading since 1276. Croydon has benefitted from its proximity to both London and the South Coast for many years, allowing those who live and work here to get in to the capital and out to surrounding towns and villages easily via well-established rail, bus and tram routes. 27 million people travel through East Croydon’s rail network each year, reaching London Gatwick airport in 16 minutes; central London in 18 minutes, and Wimbledon in under half an hour on the tram, making it a well-connected town.
