KLA DIRECTORY 2017—See related article on page 5

The KLA is planning on publishing a new Keuka Lake Directory 2017 next summer. We are asking for your help. 1. We will need a new photo for the cover. It needs to be vertical (portrait) in orientation and epitomize Keuka Lake. If you are interested in submitting a photo for the cover, please send it to us as a .jpg file to the KLA Office & indicate it is for the Directory and not the KLAeidoscope of Keuka calendar. 2. Since the main purpose of this directory is to provide a listing of lakefront properties – both alphabetical by owner and geographical by address, we are working hard to update this information. Both Steuben & Yates County’s Real Property Offices have been very helpful. However, their info may not be wholly up to date. If you feel we should have some new owner or property info, please inform the KLA Office. 3. As for your own information, please make sure it does not contain more than 2-3 names. Otherwise, list it as the “------Family”. See current listings for examples. 4. Thank you for your help – we are looking forward to our Keuka Lake Directory 2017. All current KLA members will receive a complimentary copy. At this point, it will NOT be available on our website. The KLA e-mail address is [email protected] and our phone number is 315-694-7324.

Regarding lake level information, we appreciated your understanding when we experienced difficulty in trans- mitting lake level and water temperature to the KLA website. The situation appears to have been corrected.

2016 completed the second season of our Watercraft Steward Program, which focused on education about and the prevention of Aquatic Invasive Species transported by watercraft. Efforts this year were supported (in part) by Grant funds awarded the KLA from the State DEC. These funds allowed us to confidently have resources at key locations (May through October) that were supplemented by volunteers from the KLA Membership and the Town of Wayne (at the Wayne boat launch). In fact, the support from the Town of Wayne and the other volunteers allowed us to significantly surpass our “in kind” requirements of the Grant. This was a great example of working together. (More information on the 2016 program appear elsewhere in this newsletter). With our experiences in 2016, we are now planning for the 2017 season.

Regarding water quality, volunteers conducting the water sample collections have completed the 2016 sea- son with samples now being analyzed. We are all anxious to see the comparative results to 2015 which con- tinued to show the lake in good health. This information will be available in 2017.

As can been seen from the topics referenced above, the KLA functions primarily with volunteers who typical- ly are part of the KLA membership. Without members and membership contributions, we cannot do the job you expect us to do. Your membership is important to us and the future of Keuka Lake. Should you have a neighbor that is not a member please encourage them to join – EVERYONE ON THE LAKE ENJOYS THE LAKE.

Last but not least, should you wish to become a member of the KLA Board of Directors, let us know. Each year produces opportunities for new Directors. Just give the office a call or send an email.

Thank you and have a wonderful holiday season.

I’m very glad to be back on the KLA Board and serve as Chair of the Water Quality Committee. As you know, water quality is the most important area of concern and focus of the KLA and to the fulfillment of its mission. The committee members are Al Wahlig – Pulteney, Chip Murphy – Jerusalem, Diane Ed- wards – Barrington, Dick Osgood – Milo, Ira Goldman – Barrington, Michele Rowcliffe – Milo, Thom Love— Pulteney, Emily Staychock – Yates County Cornell Cooperative Extension, Jim Balyszak – Yates County Soil and Water Conservation District, Dr. Tim Sellers – Keuka College, Dennis Carlson—KLA President, Wayne, Bill Laffin – KLA Past President and me, Mark Morris, Vice President . The committee meets twice each year.

There are many areas that impact water quality directly or indirectly, including but not limited to: septic sys- tem management—by KWIC, water testing, aquatic invasive species, land management—e.g. steep slopes , non-aquatic species (e.g. plants and insects) and many others. This committee monitors the lake and recom- mends appropriate actions to the board. You will regularly find articles in our newsletters by our scientific experts on many of these topics.

A few highlights: the water test sampling crew completed their work in October; Dr. Sellers will analyze and report early next year; the KWIC septic inspections, led by YC Soil & Water are going well; and the water chestnut pull has been completed. Overall, the lake continues to appear to be very healthy.

Thank You to everyone who volunteered as a watercraft steward this season and to our full-time stewards and everyone else who helped out with the many other aspects of the program this year. Our efforts and successes this season are commendable. Fantastic teamwork to everyone who dedicated some of their time! Our full-time stewards logged a total of 2,088 hours and volunteers logged a total of 213 hours (more than doubling the grant requirement of 100 hours). That’s a grand total of 2,301 hours! Over all of these hours: 8,924 watercraft vessels were inspected, 20,944 people were encountered and 1,460 organisms were removed before entering or upon exiting the lake. These numbers are impressive. Be- yond numbers, our efforts could be seen at the launches as we witnessed many individuals inspecting their boats before we even approached them and many others actively participating in removing vege- tation alongside us - all happy to take part in keeping the lake healthy and beautiful. The program was a huge success this year! Excellent work everyone. Thank You again

PFD REMINDER: Please keep in mind the NYS winter law requiring wearing of a PFD:

No owner or operator of a pleasure vessel less than twenty-one feet, including rowboats, ca- noes, and kayaks shall permit its operation, between November 1st and May 1st, unless each person on board such vessel is wearing a securely fastened United States Coast Guard approved wearable Personal Flotation Device (life jacket) of an appropriate size when such vessel is underway.”

While not required by law, keep in mind that if you are fishing, skating or ice boating on the ice this winter, consider wearing a PFD (an inflatable life jacket is ideal for this purpose) and carry “ice spikes” to pull your- self out should you fall through the ice.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT REMINDER: Now that you have winterized your boat and put it away, you might want to review your inventory of safety equipment to see if anything should be replaced for the upcoming 2017 season (time to get those items onto your Christmas lists now while they are fresh in your mind). Keep in mind that if you use flares to meet the requirement for emergency distress signals, they expire after 3 years and if yours have, it is a good opportunity to consider the Sirius SOS light which is Coast Guard approved and has no expiration date. Also think about any other new safety equipment that you might have seen this summer that you should have for next summer - marine radio, depth finder, new spot lights, etc. If you would like help inspecting your required safety and navigation equipment, you can request a free Vessel Safety Check from the United States Power Squadron or the Coast Guard Auxiliary. The boat does not have to be in the water or the engine running to conduct this inspection but the battery needs to be installed so the navi- gation lights can be checked. I can do these inspections or you can request one on line at http:// wow.uscgaux.info/content.php?unit=V-DEPT&category=i-want-a-vsc

WINTER BOATING: If you continue boating activities this winter, please keep in mind a number of safety concerns: WATER TEMPERATURE - Make sure you are properly dressed and outfitted as the lake temper- atures begin to drop rapidly (please see the water temperature graph on the KLA website). It has historically dropped from the 40's down into the 30's from November through March. LAKE LEVELS - As you navigate any waters this winter season, make sure you are on the lookout for shallow areas or uncovered obstacles due to the lower lake levels. Shallow water marker buoys may not be present if they have been taken out by NYS Parks for the winter months (which then get reset in the spring). LESS ASSISTANCE OUT THERE - This time of year, since there are fewer people around, cries for help or distress may go unanswered for some time. Prepare yourself for anything to happen and assume it will be awhile before help can get to you.

BOATER SAFETY COURSES: NYS law now requires anyone born on or after May 1, 1996 to hold a Boater Safety Course Certificate in order to operate any "mechanically propelled vessel". This now goes beyond just personal watercraft. There may not be many safety courses held locally during the winter months, but NYS has now approved four on line courses that you can take from the comfort of your own home. See the NYS Parks and Recreation web page at http://parks.ny.gov/recreation/boating/boating-safety-class.aspx

BOATING WHILE IMPAIRED LAW: Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed “Tiffany Heitkamp’s” Law, legisla- tion that strengthens penalties for boating while intoxicated offenses by linking them to prior drinking while driving offenses involving a vehicle. The bill (A.1597-A/S.3785-A) requires courts to consider prior Driving While Intoxicated or Driving While Ability Impaired convictions when sentencing a person for Boating While Intoxicated or Boating While Ability Impaired.

Specifically, this measure requires that a court sentencing an individual for a BWI carrying a 30-day sentence must consider any prior DWIs or DWAIs by the same individual within a five-year period. When sentencing for a BWAI carrying a 180-day sentence, the court must consider prior DWIs or DWAIs within a 10 year peri- od. This change would require a sentencing judge to impose a higher sentence on those who repeatedly get behind the wheel in an intoxicated state, regardless of whether it is a car or a boat. Hopefully no KLA mem- ber will be impacted by this law but we did have a BWI arrest on Keuka Lake this summer for a boater who ran over a dock and up on shore. Fortunately there were no serious injuries, just significant property dam- age. HAVE A GREAT WINTER!

2017 ESTHER N. WAHLIG KEUKA LAKE WATERSHED SCHOLARSHIP

The goal of this scholarship, sponsored by the Keuka Lake Association, is to assist a graduating senior high school student who is planning to enroll in a four year program (may include a two year college with plans to transfer to a four year institution) and who is planning on pursuing a career in general environmental sciences or limnology or water quali- ty/watershed management. Eligible applicants include senior students graduating from high schools in the Keuka Lake Watershed, including Haverling Central School, Dundee Central School, Penn Yan Academy, Prattsburgh Central School, Hammondsport Central School or senior students whose parents are Keuka Lake Association members. The one-time $1000 scholarship will be awarded in one installment upon satisfactory completion of the first semes- ter and submission of a transcript sent to the Keuka Lake Association office for review by the committee. The selection committee is composed of five members appointed by the Keuka Lake Association and will meet in April of the student’s graduating year. The committee must receive application forms by April fifteenth of the grad- uating year. By June first the committee will send the selected recipient a letter and forward a copy to the guidance department of the appropriate school. Students should submit an application for the scholarship to the Keuka Lake Association by mail to P. O. Box 35, Penn Yan, NY 14527. The application must include a letter of recommendation from one of the applicant’s teachers and a 250 to 300 word essay describing the student’s interest in his or her selected field of study and how the student plans to apply that knowledge either in a future career or for enriching his/her appreciation in the environmental sciences or water quality/watershed management. An application is available on our website and it will be included in our March newsletter.

Page 8 December 2016 KLA Newsletter Critter Corner - Dave deCalesta Keuka’s Exotics Part I: Fish, and the tangled web

When we hear the words “exotic pest”, we often think of destructive plants and animals that were intro- duced from overseas and which wreak havoc on local ecosystems. Famous examples are the Dutch elm disease, a fungus introduced from Europe and spread by the elm bark beetle disease which ravaged native elms. Another is the chestnut blight, another fungus introduced from Japanese nursery stock chestnuts which de- stroyed chestnut trees, driving them to extinction in the early 1900s. And, of course, zebra mussels. Aquatic exotic plants, another ecological issue, have been competently and comprehensively covered in previous KLA newslet- ters. Keuka Lake and its watershed harbor a number of exotic animals, some of which were introduced intentionally. And some came not from overseas, but rather from other places in North America. This first installment addresses exotic fish, mussels, and . Part II addresses exotic mammals, birds, reptiles & amphibians. Exotics have had a major impact on Keuka Lake’s fishery and more is likely to come. Most impacts deal with the introductions of seven fish species (, rainbow trout, landlocked salmon, common carp, smelt, sawbel- lies, and round goby) and zebra and quagga mussels, and resulting impacts on lake trout. Lake trout originally were the only “trout” in Keuka Lake (although, technically, lakers and brook trout are actually char, a relative of true trout). They foraged on native bait fish such as sculpins, darters, and fry (baby fish) of game fish such as bass and bluegills. Then came the introductions. Brown trout, introduced from Europe, were intentionally stocked in Keuka Lake around 1980, but escapers from the Bath Fish Hatchery resulted in browns occupying Keuka Lake years earlier. Rainbow trout were intentionally stocked in 1900 and landlocked salmon were stocked in 1976 and continue to be stocked. These three salmonids are favorites among fishermen/women, and all competed with lakers for food (bait fish) and probably drove their numbers down, especially as abundance of bait fish declined. Carp, introduced in 1879, may be discounted be- cause their impact on lake trout is minimal. Enter two exotic bait fish, the rainbow smelt and alewife (sawbelly) which originated from east coast saltwater are- as. Rainbow smelt were stocked in Michigan in the early 1900s and spread from there to the great lakes, thence to Keuka Lake ~ 1960. Alewives were first recorded in Lake Ontario in the 1870s, and spread to the rest of the Great Lakes after 1931. Their abundance peaked in the 1950s as lake trout populations decreased. Keuka Lake had a major die-off of alewives around 1967. The DEC seined Waneta and Seneca Lakes for alewives and stocked about 70,000 adult alewives in Keuka Lake between 1968 and 1971. Smelt and alewife young compete with native bait fish (e.g., sculpins, darters, and fry of game fish such as bass and perch) for phytoplankton (small microscopic organisms—diatoms, protozoa, small crustaceans—that drift with water currents) and cause reduc- tions in their numbers. But lake trout (browns and rainbows too) responded positively to the large increase in for- age presented by smelt and alewives. However, it turns out that smelt and alewives carry the enzyme thiaminase which breaks down thiamin (vitamin B1) that lakers and other trout need to incorporate in the eggs they spawn for proper development of their fry. Thiamin-deficient fry exhibit early mortality syndrome (EMS) that includes loss of equilibrium, swimming in a spiral or corkscrew pattern, lethargy, failure to feed, tetany, hemorrhages, hydrocepha- lus and death. The next chapter in this convoluted mess (out with the smelt and alewives, in with exotic mussels) is the entry of zebra and quagga mussels (from Europe – Caspian and Black seas) that stowed away in the ballast of sea-going freighters. They were released into the Great Lakes via the Saint Lawrence Seaway and Welland Canal in the ear- ly 1990s and spread to Keuka Lake shortly thereafter. Most of us are familiar with the zebra striping on the zebra mussel, but its cousin, the quagga is about twice as big and apparently more numerous. Both are filter feeders and rapidly expanded in Keuka Lake. They feed on phytoplankton and removed so many that water clarity in- creased dramatically, leading to increased growth of algae and other aquatic weeds stimulated by increased amounts of sunlight penetrating the waters of Keuka Lake cleared of many of its phytoplankton. The mussels also competed with smelt and alewives (and fry of lake and other trout) for phytoplankton and their rapid increase coin- cided with the collapse of smelt and alewife populations (no cause and effect proven, just guilt by association?)— and drastic decline in abundance of forage fish for lake trout (and other game fish). In what may be the next chapter in this story, the round goby, a freshwater Eurasian fish was introduced into the St. Claire River in Michigan in 1990, reached Lake Superior by 1995, and has the potential for colonizing Keuka Lake. This fish grows to 10 inches in length and feeds on eggs and young of lake trout and other game fish as well as on zebra and quagga mussels. As such, one exotic species, the goby, may on one hand mitigate the negative impacts of another (the mussels) regarding lake trout and water quality, but on the other hand may negatively im- pact trout because the goby spreads rapidly, eats trout fry, and takes over optimal habitat, chasing off native spawning fish. The goby is not yet established in Keuka Lake, but stay tuned.

Even though Dave and his wife, Kathy, have left Keuka Lake for Tennessee, Dave has still volunteered to continue to contribute to the KLA newsletter. His knowledge is much appreciated!!! Past “Critter Corner” articles can be found on our website.

Lake home names In the 2017 directory?

With 2017 right around the corner, the Keuka Lake Association is preparing to publish the 2017 Keuka Lake Directory. It is thought the first Keuka Lake Directory was published as far back as 1935. Various organizations published updated versions throughout the years. The Keuka Lake Association, founded in 1956, took on the responsibility of updating and publishing the Keuka Lake Directory in the 1980s. In recent years, the KLA has updated and published the Keuka Lake Directory every three years. A lot changes in three years, and the KLA considers the directory to be an important refer- ence for those who live, visit, or work on Keuka Lake and the sur- 1981 rounding area. Right up through 1981 publication of the directory, cottage names were includ- ed. Sadly, this feature was dropped from future publications. In 2017, we would like to bring back this fun and unique feature. Ellen Shaw Maceko has agreed to take on this project. If your cottage/home has a name, please forward the information to [email protected]. In the subject line, please put KLA Di- rectory Cottage Name, so it will be readily noticed. If you do not have email access, please call 329.2859 or 569.2700 and ask to speak with Ellen or drop by the KLA office in Penn Yan and leave the information with Margo.
