History of Tapestry In medieval times, decorative tapestries were used as wall hangings to brighten and insulate damp and chilly buildings. This delightful Art Nouveau poster was created by the Swiss-born French painter and printmaker, Theophile Steinlen (1859 - 1923). The design features a haughty black cat sitting neatly with its gaze fixed on the viewer. It is housed at the Zimmerli Art Musuem, Rutgers University, USA. This pattern was originally a study for a series of mosaics commissioned for the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. Created in rich, warm colours, this piece presents the traditional Tree of Life bearing fruit and birds, but in a flowing, Walter Crane-Swan spiraling Nouveau style.
