Co-sponsored by the Office for the Arts at Harvard and Harvard's Department of Music, this three-day event- October 12-14, 2006-will explore Bernstein's work as a composer and his ties to various musical and educational communities in greater Boston. It will also exam­ ine lesser-known facets of his life through panel discussions, master classes, exhibitions, performances and film screenings. The festival's panel discussions will include eminent scholars and critics, Bernstein family mem­ bers, childhood friends, former colleagues, and performers with a connection to his music. I’m not surprised that people s t i l l c l i n g t o t h e s e d i v i s i o n s . S o m e w h o love classical masterpieces may need to feel reassured by their sophistication, looking down on popular culture as dis- posable and inferior. Meanwhile, pop music fans can dismiss classical music lovers as elitist snobs, out of touch with reality and hopelessly “square.” Fortunately, music isn’t so black and white, and such classifications, especially of new music, are becoming ever more anachronistic. With the benefit of time, much of our country’s greatest music, once thought to be merely “popular,” is now taking its rightful place in the category of “American Classics.” I was educated in an environment that was dismissive of much of our great American music. Wanting to be regarded as a “serious” musician, I found myself going along with the thinking of the times, propagated by our most rigid conservatory student in the 1970’s, I grew work that studiously avoided melody or key academic composers and scholars of up convinced that Aaron Copland was a signature. the 1950’s -1970’s.     A Culture of Recording: Christopher Raeburn and the Decca Record Company Sally Elizabeth Drew A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities Department of Music This work was supported by the Arts & Humanities Research Council September 2018 1 2 Abstract This thesis examines the working culture of the Decca Record Company, and how group interaction and individual agency have made an impact on the production of music recordings. Founded in London in 1929, Decca built a global reputation as a pioneer of sound recording with access to the world’s leading musicians. With its roots in manufacturing and experimental wartime engineering, the company developed a peerless classical music catalogue that showcased technological innovation alongside artistic accomplishment. This investigation focuses specifically on the contribution of the recording producer at Decca in creating this legacy, as can be illustrated by the career of Christopher Raeburn, the company’s most prolific producer and specialist in opera and vocal repertoire. It is the first study to examine Raeburn’s archive, and is supported with unpublished memoirs, private papers and recorded interviews with colleagues, collaborators and artists. Using these sources, the thesis considers the history and functions of the staff producer within Decca’s wider operational structure in parallel with the personal aspirations of the individual in exerting control, choice and authority on the process and product of recording. Having been recruited to Decca by John Culshaw in 1957, Raeburn’s fifty-year career spanned seminal moments of the company’s artistic and commercial lifecycle: from assisting in exploiting the dramatic potential of stereo technology in Culshaw’s Ring during the 1960s to his serving as audio producer for the 1990 The Three Tenors Concert international phenomenon.

Frederick Thurston was a prominent British clarinet performer and teacher in the first half of the 20th century. Due to the brevity of his life and the impact of two world wars, Thurston’s legacy is often overlooked among clarinetists in the United States. Thurston’s playing inspired 19 composers to write 22 solo and chamber works for him, none of which he personally commissioned. The purpose of this document is to provide a comprehensive biography of Thurston’s career as clarinet performer and teacher with a complete bibliography of compositions written for him. With biographical knowledge and access to the few extant recordings of Thurston’s playing, clarinetists may gain a fuller understanding of Thurston’s ideal clarinet sound and musical ideas. These resources are necessary in order to recognize the qualities about his playing that inspired composers to write for him and to perform these works with the composers’ inspiration in mind. Despite the vast list of works written for and dedicated to Thurston, clarinet players in the United States are not familiar with many of these works, and available resources do not include a complete listing.

    A Study in Violin Pedagogy: Teaching Techniques from Selected Works by Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Bartók, and Delerue Layne Vanderbeek This article is an outline and analysis of a few specific methods of composition used by the composers Sergei Rachmaninoff, Sergei Prokofiev, Béla Bartók, and Georges Delerue for the purpose of reproducing the styles and techniques for an intermediate level violinist. This will be accomplished by gathering information concerning each composer and their style and then reproducing that style in an original composition at the intermediate level. Each composer will be dealt with in a section divided into several parts: relevant biographical and historical information, stylistic analysis, and methods employed to incorporate these stylistic characteristics into the intermediate level composition. The biographical and historical information will consist of pertinent historic, social, and political events that influenced compositional style and growth of each composer. Stylistic analysis will be based upon general historical information and analysis of the specific composition in consideration. Scalar resources, chord and harmony use, texture and rhythm will be discussed and illustrated. The incorporation of these stylistic elements into an intermediate level composition will be a direct conclusion to the previous section. The information gained in the stylistic analysis will be utilized in original intermediate compositions, and it will be illustrated how this is accomplished and how these twentieth-century techniques are being employed and incorporated. Within the section titled “Methods of Stylistic Incorporation,” portions of the intermediate compositions will be used to demonstrate aspects of the composers' styles that were included. Each complete intermediate composition will be placed at the end of each section to demonstrate the results of the analysis.

    The KF is excited to announce the winners of the 2015 Marcella Sembrich International Voice Competition: 1st prize – Jakub Jozef Orlinski, counter-tenor; 2nd prize – Piotr Buszewski, tenor; 3rd prize – Katharine Dain, soprano; Honorable Mention – Marcelina Beucher, soprano; Out of 92 applicants, 37 contestants took part in the preliminary round of the competition on Saturday, November 7th, with 9 progressing into the final round on Sunday, November 8th at Ida K. Lang Recital Hall at Hunter College. This year's competition was evaluated by an exceptional jury: Charles Kellis (Juilliard, Prof. emeritus) served as Chairman of the Jury, joined by Damon Bristo (Vice President and Artist Manager at Columbia Artists Management Inc.), Markus Beam (Artist Manager at IMG Artists) and Dr. Malgorzata Kellis who served as a Creative Director and Polish song expert. About the KF's Marcella Sembrich Competition: Marcella Sembrich-Kochanska, soprano (1858-1935) was one of Poland's greatest opera stars. She appeared during the first season of the Metropolitan Opera in 1883, and would go on to sing in over 450 performances at the Met. Her portrait can be found at the Metropolitan Opera House, amongst the likes of Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, and Giuseppe Verdi. The KF's Marcella Sembrich Memorial Voice Competition honors the memory of this great Polish artist, with the aim of popularizing Polish song in the United States, and discovering new talents (aged 18-35) in the operatic world. This year the competition has turned out to be very successful, considering that the number of contestants have greatly increased and that we have now also attracted a number of International contestants from Japan, China, South Korea, France, Canada, Puerto Rico and Poland.

Warner & Erato certainly have plenty to offer us, taking up a page and half of the ‘priorities’ with new recordings from Nigel Kennedy, Philippe Jaroussky, Emmanuel Pahud, David Aaron Carpenter and others, alongside some superbly compiled boxsets including a Massenet Opera Collection, performances from Joseph Keilberth (in the ICON series), and two interesting looking Debussy collections: ‘Centenary Discoveries’ and ‘His First Performers’. Rachel Podger revisits Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for Channel Classics (already garnering strong reviews), Hyperion offer us five new titles including Schubert from Marc-Andre Hamelin and Berlioz from Lawrence Power and Andrew Manze (see ‘Disc of the Month’ below), plus we have strong releases from Sandrine Piau (Alpha), the Belcea Quartet joined by Piotr Anderszewski (also Alpha), Magdalena Kozena (Supraphon), Osmo Vanska (BIS), Boris Giltberg (Naxos) and Paul McCreesh (Signum).

Assignments and Examinations:!In-class performances: You will be expected to perform a minimum of 3 times (5 for upper division) during each quarter, each performance taking place on a different day.
