  • The Effects of Digital Music Distribution" (2012)
Southern Illinois University Carbondale OpenSIUC Research Papers Graduate School Spring 4-5-2012 The ffecE ts of Digital Music Distribution Rama A. Dechsakda [email protected] Follow this and additional works at: http://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/gs_rp The er search paper was a study of how digital music distribution has affected the music industry by researching different views and aspects. I believe this topic was vital to research because it give us insight on were the music industry is headed in the future. Two main research questions proposed were; “How is digital music distribution affecting the music industry?” and “In what way does the piracy industry affect the digital music industry?” The methodology used for this research was performing case studies, researching prospective and retrospective data, and analyzing sales figures and graphs. Case studies were performed on one independent artist and two major artists whom changed the digital music industry in different ways. Another pair of case studies were performed on an independent label and a major label on how changes of the digital music industry effected their business model and how piracy effected those new business models as well. I analyzed sales figures and graphs of digital music sales and physical sales to show the differences in the formats. I researched prospective data on how consumers adjusted to the digital music advancements and how piracy industry has affected them. Last I concluded all the data found during this research to show that digital music distribution is growing and could possibly be the dominant format for obtaining music, and the battle with piracy will be an ongoing process that will be hard to end anytime soon.

The cultural disconnect was that drastic. France, because of its colonies, half the team is black. There was a serious disconnect between the players and the staff. • A Qualitative Content Analysis of Kanye West's Twitter Practice
The Life Of Kanye A Qualitative Content Analysis of Kanye West’s Twitter Practice. 15.08.2016 Lund University M.Sc. in Media and Communications Studies Gloe Lucas 920721-T197 !1 ABSTRACT Celebrity Twitter use has recently been the subject of celebrity studies. Performing authenticity and intimacy as well as engaging interactively with followers are considered central characteristics of ‘micro-celebrity’ practice, which is widely considered to be extensively utilized by celebrities in their use of Twitter. Taking this framework suggested by celebrity studies as a point of departure, this thesis focuses on the case study of Kanye West, whose recent use of Twitter has been given much attention by celebrity news media due to his controversial tweets. In carrying out a content analysis of this case study’s tweets, this thesis aims to understand the way Kanye West is using Twitter, what strategies he is employing and how this links to the structural implications of celebrity. As the findings suggest, Kanye West employs two main strategies in his usage of Twitter: In his first strategy he uses Twitter as a tool to promote his celebrity commodity, increase his celebrity capital and create an elite network of fellow celebrities. The second strategy aims at creating an authentic and personal narrative that redefines and extends Kanye West’s celebrity persona. Within this second strategy, “stream-of-consciousness” writing was identified as a unique strategy employed by Kanye West in his Twitter practice. Keywords: Celebrity, Twitter, Micro-Celebrity, Authenticity, Intimacy, Performance. Number of words: 20.650 !2 Acknowledgements I hereby want to thank those that enabled and helped to create this paper.

  • The Messianic Zeal: a Case of Radical Aesthetics in Black Cultural Production
Williams: The Messianic Zeal: A Case of Radical Aesthetics in Black Cultura The Messianic Zeal: A Case of Radical Aesthetics in Black Cultural Production Daniel L. Williams Abstract This essay examines artwork by popular artists D’Angelo, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar and 2pac Shakur and compares their articulations to a larger discourse of messianic symbolism in (black) American popular culture. In this paper, messianic symbolism is a discursive chain of symbols that invoke the Black experience. Artists extend the legacy of earlier representations of black messianism by similarly representing themselves as Jews, saviors or folk heroes with a specific mission to save a world burdened by racial strife and oppression. These qualities manifest in lyrics, album covers, and other late 20th century rhetoric. VOLUME 5 ISSUE 1 104 Published by VCU Scholars Compass, 2018 1 Journal of Hip Hop Studies, Vol. 5 [2018], Iss. 1, Art. 9 Introduction Why are contemporary artists preoccupied with the messianic? In a genre known for moral shortcomings, conversations related to religion topics are less common especially considering the “secularization of the West.”1 The messianic paradigm functions beyond religion and encompasses political conviction. This study posits W.E.B. Du Bois as an ancestor of public intellectuals/artists who represent Black American historical circumstances as a messianic experience. The messianic is a common trope among scholars that suggests Jewish culture has a fundamentally different relationship to time than their gentile neighbors. Various black cultural producers to restore meaningful subjectivity to a systematically oppressed ethnic group have used the idea of a messiah. One may view this representation as a tactic of self- fashioning meant to neutralize controlling images of slavery through notions and references to divinity.2 Unlike their contemporaries (Greco-Roman, Persian), ancient Hebrews did not see time as a cyclical, endless cycle, but rather, as moving forward to an end.
