Michał Leliński Animated Animals as Conceptual Blends Prace Językoznawcze 15/4, 35-46 2013 UWM PRACE JĘZYKOZNAWCZE ZESZYT XV/4 2013 35-45 Michał Leliński Olsztyn Animated Animals as Conceptual Blends Zwierzęta animowane jako amalgamaty pojęciowe The present article analyses a number of cartoon animal characters using the theory of conceptual blending to demonstrate how Varying degrees of complexity in their naming, structure and oVerall design are aimed at the target audience. Słowa kluczowe: językoznawstwo kognitywne, teoria amalgamatów, metafora Key words: cognitiVe linguistic, blending theory, metaphor The concept of Conceptual Blending is the brainchild of Giles Fauconnier and Mark Turner, who previously worked on the Mental Space Theory and the meaning construction from the perspective of metaphor in literary language respectively. They combined their efforts in 1996 in order to explain certain observations they had regarding both of their work. (Fauconnier and Turner 1996) Fauconnier and Turner developed an integration network theory, which consists of inputs that can be mapped together. This mapping might be reminiscent of the two-domain model known from Conceptual Metaphor Theory, however, this variation is more dynamic and is based on Mental Spaces, that are temporary structures that develop during the process of their creation. The two (or more) inputs must establish a generic space, which then will provide us with meaning that will be shared by all of them. Finally, there is a fourth and final structure called blended space or blend, which consists of counter-part connectors transferring to the blend, a process which is called selective projection, because only a few elements are ‘projected’ into the final space, ones which are required for the purpose of comprehension.

  • Bamcinématek Presents Sneak Previews from IFC Films
BAMcinématek announces full lineup for Chuck Amuck, celebrating the centennial of legendary American cartoonist Chuck Jones, Nov 23—26 Features extremely rare screenings of Looney Tunes shorts in 35mm—29 cartoons in all, many including Brooklyn’s own Bugs Bunny The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor of BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/Nov 14, 2012—From Friday, November 23 through Monday, November 26, BAMcinématek presents Chuck Amuck, a four-day tribute to legendary American cartoonist Chuck Jones. This series celebrates Jones’ centennial with a generous selection of rapidly paced, visually ingenious Looney Tunes shorts, with three programs screening all 29 cartoons in their original 35mm format—an extremely rare treat (a Jones showcase of this breadth has not screened in New York in at least a decade). Chuck Amuck also features as a handful of films that display the influence of Jones’ anarchic spirit on live-action directors. With a career spanning over 300 films, Chuck Jones was the genius behind many of Bugs and Daffy’s most beloved romps—Brooklyn’s own Flatbush accented Bugs was born on July 27, 1940 under Ebbets Field—and a staggering number of Warner Brothers’ most immortal characters, including Wile E. Coyote, Road Runner, Marvin the Martian, and Pepé Le Pew. The complete list of three programs, in order of presentation: Shorts Program 1, (Fri, Nov 23 at 2, 6:50pm): Wearing of the Grin (1951) - Porky Pig in his final starring role Ready Set Zoom! (1955) - Road Runner taunts Wile E. Coyote (who else?) Robin Hood Daffy (1958) - Daffy desperately tries to prove himself to Friar Tuck (Porky Pig) Duck Dodgers (1953) - the sharp Flash Gordon parody and thinly veiled Cold War satire Fastest with the Mostest (1960) - Wile E.
