BINGLEY enjoys a considerable share of the worsted manufacl1lre, and is a healthy market town, built of stone, and seated on the crown and declivities of an eminence, between two picturesque valleys, being bounded on one side by the river Aire, and on the other hy the Leeds and Liverpool canal. It is on the high road between Bradford and Keighley, 4 mileij E.S.E. of the latter, 6 miles N. W. by N. of the former, and 16 miles W. by N. of Leeds; in the Upper Division of Skyrack Wapentake, and in Keighley Union. The Leeds and Bradford Extension Railway was opened from Shipley to Bingley and Keighley, in March, 1847. (See page 313.) The township of Bingley­ tcitlt-Micklethwaite contains 9890 acres, and had only 4100 inhabitants in 1801; but in 1831, they had increased to 8036, and in 18-H, to 10,159 souls. It includes many neat villas and ~mall ~cattered hamlets, and the villages of COTTINGLEY, 1~ mileS. by E.; HATNWORTH, 2 miles W.; and CULLING WORTH, 3 miles S.W. of the town. Bingley parish comprises aho the township of East and West Morton. The market is held every Tue~day, and the annual fairs on Jan. 25th, for horned cattle, and Aug. 25th, 26th, a.nd 27th, for horses and merchandise. Petty Sessions are held at the Brown Cow Inn, on the last Tuesday of every month; and the Court Baron wa~ held monthly, at the King's Head, for the recoyery of debts not exceeding £5, till 1847, when County Courts were established at Bradford, Keighley, &c., for this part of . The Chureh (All Saints) ilia viearage, valued at £233, in the gift of the Crown. The Independents, Baptists, anrl Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists, have chapels here; and at Cro~s­ flats, is an old Quakers' burial ground. The Grammar &hool ilil of ancient foundation, and has an endowment of nt.!arly £270 per annum. It is free, for the classic~, to all sons of parishioners. At Priesthorpe, are Almshouses for five poor widowM, left by Sarah Rhodes, in 1784, with an annuity of £3 for each inmate. The poor have several bene­ factions, amounting to more than £80 per annum. Here is a Mechanics' Imtitute, with a library of about 500 volumes. An Act for ImprOTJing the Town was obtained in 1847, with the power of erecting Gas Works. Mr. D. W. S!rnrp at present supplies gas from his factory, at Ss. per 1000 feet. The Water 111orks, which have long been inadequate to the wants of the town, are abont to be enlarged by W. B. Ferrand, Esq., M.P., (for Knares bro',) who resides in the parish, and i8 the largest proprietor of the soil.
