When I first got saved, I bombarded pretty much everyone around me with questions about pretty much everything. My pastor at the time told me to just read the Bible and eventually I would find some answers. He was right, and after teaching the Bible for over 25 years, I want to help you figure out how to learn from God’s Word too, so I put together this book that answers 100 questions about God and Christianity. I love that God builds relationship with us through His Word and prayer, so I’m praying that it’s a blessing to you as you grow closer to Him. Why should we try to understand the Trinity?. 6 1 REAL FAITH 1. What are theology and monotheism? Theology literally means the “study of God”. Varying religions and philosophies have vying proposed understandings of what the truth is about God. Christianity’s view of God is monotheistic. Monotheism teaches that there is only one personal God who is separate (tran- scendent) from the universe though involved in it (immanent). As a result, many people have regarded Christianity as just one of many monotheistic religions along with Judaism and Islam. In one sense, Christianity is monotheistic, as it does believe in one God. Yet, upon further investigation, the Bible is not impressed with mere monotheism because God’s objective is not that we simply believe in one God. As James 2:19 says, “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!” The God of Christianity as revealed in the Bible is one God who exists in the Trinitarian community of Father, Son, and Spirit. No other religion shares the concept of the Trinity with Christianity. 2 TOP 100 QUESTIONS 2. What is the Trinity? The Father, Son, and Spirit are equally declared throughout Scripture to be God. The Trinity appears in creationa, at Mary’s conception of Jesus in Luke 1:35, at Jesus’ baptism in Matthew 3:16-17, and in Jesus’ Great Commissionb. Additionally, every mem- ber of the Trinity takes part in salvation with a different rolec. God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. One God. Three persons. While the word Trinity does not appear in the Bible, this One- who-is-Three concept very clearly does. As an aside, the Bible also does not include the word Bible. The word Trinity is a shorthand way of summarizing complex biblical truth. It was likely first used by the church father Tertullian (AD 155–220). To say that God exists as a Trinity does not mean that there are three Gods, or that one God merely manifests himself as either the modes of Father, Son, or Holy Spirit on various occasions. For our purposes, we will use the following definition: The Trinity is one God who eternally exists as three distinct persons— Father, Son, and Spirit—who are each fully and equally God in eternal relation with each other. To say that each member of the Trinity is a “person” does not mean that God the Father or God the Spirit became human beings. Rather, it means that each member of the Trinity thinks, acts, feels, speaks, and relates because they are persons and not impersonal forces. Further, each member of the Trinity is equally God, which means that they share all the divine attributes (e.g. eternality, omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence), which we will explore in later chapters. a Gen. 1:1-2 b Matt. 28:19 c Eph 1:4-13, 1 Pet 1:2, Titus 3:4-6, 1 Cor 12:4-6 3 REAL FAITH 3. Who is the Father? Innumerable Scriptures clearly and emphatically declare the Father to be God.a In the history of Christianity and all the cults and religions that have erred from biblical truth, there has never been any noteworthy false teaching denying the deity of God the Father, because it is so obviously clear throughout the entirety of Scrip- ture. However, there has sadly been an underemphasis on God the Father in many Christian circles because of a father wound. The father wound is an unhealed hurt from a physical or spiritual father or father figure in our life. Fathers fail us, and unless we forgive them and invite God the Father to heal our father wound, we remain burdened instead of unburdened, broken instead of healed, and made bitter instead of made better. People with an unhealed father wound can have a wrong and warped view of God. Our view of God is often a projection or rejection of our imperfect earthly dad onto God. To heal the fa- ther wound, you need to forgive the earthly physical and spiritual father(s) who have failed you. This forgiveness will remove the demonic foothold that bitterness brings. Jesus promised “I will not leave you as orphans.”b When a child gets adopted, they adapt to having a father and spend time getting to know their new father and family. To become a Christian is to get a new family (the church), a new big brother (Jesus), and a new Father (God). a John 6:27; 17:3; 1 Cor. 8:6; 2 Cor. 1:3; Eph. 1:3; 1 Pet. 1:3 b John 14:18 4 TOP 100 QUESTIONS 4. Who are the Son (Jesus) and Holy Spirit? Jesus is also repeatedly declared to be God throughout the Scriptures by both othersa and himself, without apology or cor- rection. bJesus was ultimately put to death for declaring himself to be God, a declaration that, if untrue, would have been a viola- tion of the first commandment and a blasphemous sinc. We dis- cuss Jesus’ divinity and humanity more in depth in the following sections. In addition to the Father and Son, the Holy Spirit is clearly called God throughout the Scriptures. In the Old Testament, he possesses the attributes of God, which reveals his divinity; he is creatord, eternale, omnipotent (all-powerful)f, omniscient (all- knowing)g, and omnipresent.h In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit is also clearly declared God.i Furthermore, the Holy Spirit is not merely an impersonal force but a person who can be grievedj, resistedk, and insulted.m The personhood of the Holy Spirit explains why Jesus speaks of him as a personal “he” and not an impersonal “it.”n a Matt. 28:9; John 1:1–4, 14; 5:17–18; 8:58; 10:30–38; 12:37–41; cf. However, the content of faith increased progressively throughout biblical history, beginning with the proto-evangelium (first gospel - Gen 3:15) and concluding with the all-sufficient revelation of Christ in the sixty-six inscripturated books of the Bible. When Jesus began his ministry, He immediately proclaimed the Gospel of the Kingdom to national Israel (Matt 3:2; 4:17). Jesus’ numerous references to the Kingdom of God call attention to the antecedent prophecies in the OT involving the Divine Messiah and describe a literal, earthly realm involving the land of Palestine and the nation of Israel over which the Messiah would reign (cf.

    Mark Driscoll removed from the Acts 29 church planting network he helped found Sarah Pulliam Bailey August 8, 2014, Religion News Service (RNS) Seattle megachurch pastor Mark Driscoll has been removed from a church-planting network of more than 500 churches he helped found after a pattern of “ungodly and disqualifying behavior.” Driscoll, co-founder of the Acts 29 Network, has been an influential but edgy pastor within conservative evangelical circles for several years. His own Mars Hill Church attracts some 14,000 people at 15 locations across five states each Sunday. At the same time, however, Driscoll has been controversial in evangelical circles for years. The New York Times Magazine called him “one of the most admired — and reviled — figures among evangelicals nationwide.” He has been provocative, occasionally profane and has faced allegations of plagiarism and inflating his book sales. After Acts 29 board action, all of Driscoll’s Mars Hill Church locations have been removed from the website of the network. “It is our conviction that the nature of the accusations against Mark, most of which have been confirmed by him, make it untenable and unhelpful to keep Mark and Mars Hill in our network,” the Act 29 board wrote in a letter. “In taking this action, our prayer is that it will encourage the leadership of Mars Hill to respond in a distinctive and godly manner so that the name of Christ will not continue to be dishonored.” In a longer letter obtained by blogger Warren Throckmorton, the Acts 29 board asked Driscoll to “step down from ministry for an extended time and seek help.” “Over the past three years, our board and network have been the recipients of countless shots and dozens of fires directly linked to you and what we consider ungodly and disqualifying behavior,” the board wrote.

Answer: Calvinism and Arminianism are two systems of theology that attempt to explain the relationship between God's sovereignty and man's responsibility in the matter of salvation. Calvinism is named for John Calvin, a French theologian who lived from 1509-1564. Arminianism is named for Jacobus Arminius, a Dutch theologian who lived from 1560-1609. Both systems can be summarized with five points. Calvinism holds to the total depravity of man while Arminianism holds to partial depravity. Calvinism’s doctrine of total depravity states that every aspect of humanity is corrupted by sin; therefore, human beings are unable to come to God on their own accord. Partial depravity states that every aspect of humanity is tainted by sin, but not to the extent that human beings are unable to place faith in God of their own accord. Note: classical Arminianism rejects “partial depravity” and holds a view very close to Calvinistic “total depravity” (although the extent and meaning of that depravity are debated in Arminian circles). In general, Arminians believe there is an “intermediate” state between total depravity and salvation. In this state, made possible by prevenient grace, the sinner is being drawn to Christ and has the God-given ability to choose salvation. Calvinism includes the belief that election is unconditional, while Arminianism believes in conditional election. Unconditional election is the view that God elects individuals to salvation based entirely on His will, not on anything inherently worthy in the individual. Conditional election states that God elects individuals to salvation based on His foreknowledge of who will believe in Christ unto salvation, thereby on the condition that the individual chooses God.

    The Calvinists: a Reply to Gerald Harris By Mark Lamprecht, HereIBlog.com Gerald Harris, editor of the The Christian Index, the Georgia Southern Baptist newspaper, recently published the article ―The Calvinists are here.‖1 There have been two immediate responses to Harris‘ piece including one by former Calvinist William Birch2 and an article in the Baptist Press in which some of the people mentioned by Harris answered his concerns.3 Harris‘ article seems to be pieced together without a thesis. The article seems strung together by insinuations built upon a connect-the-dots type of guilt by association. In short, there is a lot to untangle in Harris‘ article. In the following response, which has been broken into two parts, I will attempt to untangle some of Harris‘ insinuations and point out that his his dots do not actually connect to support insinuations that Calvinism is a problem. Sections of Harris‘ article will be quoted and interacted with so this article will be long, but necessary. Why is this response necessary? This response is necessary for the sake of encouraging Southern Baptists from differing theological perspectives to move beyond casting judgements based upon personal bias. The response is necessary to encourage continuing working together for the sake of the gospel while embracing one another in Christ without questioning each others motives every step of the way. Remember, love bears, believes, hopes, and endures all things (1 Cor. 13:7) and love covers a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8). I hold Mr. Harris as a brother in Christ who has served the body of Christ through the SBC for many years.

Numerous other famous athletes (and some winners of non-sporting events) have appeared on these commercials since then. The phrase is so popular that you can hear Little League coaches jokingly say after a win, “We’re going to Disney World.” Champions normally celebrate, but normally not at Disney World, which makes it funny and memorable. We are used to seeing champagne poured on heads in the locker room, parades in the city, and much more. (Rick Pitino, the coach of the NCAA champion Louisville Cardinals actually got a back tattoo this year to celebrate! I think he should have gone to Disney World instead!). Elijah just won the Superbowl at Carmel. He would make a great candidate for a Disney World commercial. But we do not see him going to Disney World, having a parade, getting a back tat, or riding off into the sunset in triumph. Chapter 19 does not begin the way we expect at all. We expect to the see Israel “turning their hearts back” to God (18:37). After all, in response to God burning up the soggy altar, they fell on their faces and confessed, “The LORD, he is God; the LORD, he is God” (39). But do we see a national revival occurring? No. We hope to find wicked King Ahab, return to the palace and remove Jezebel for her idolatrous influence in the land.

    Creation: God Makes Lecture - All right, well, we are in lecture number three, we're dealing with Creation, God Makes and I'll start with a story. When I was a little boy, I was the oldest of five kids and before the other kids were born and I was the first born, my mom would take me out of town to go up in the mountains to have fun and go exploring, oftentimes when my dad who was a construction worker was working out of town, actually sleeping in his truck just to make ends meet 'cause they were a poor, newly married couple. Anyways, my mom would take me up to the mountains and we'd go find rivers and lakes and go for hikes and visit places and she would always tell me when we were driving, she'd say, "Marquee, we need a Jeep," 'cause she had a 1960 something Chevy Chevelle. If you've ever tried to go off-roading in a two-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive older vehicle, you know exactly how frustrating that is. So I asked her "Mommy, well, if we had a Jeep, where would we go?" She said, "We could go anywhere. "We could go anywhere. "We could go up in the woods, we can go down the river." And so as a little boy, I just got infatuated with Jeeps and so then I've had two Jeeps, my first was a two door, six speed manual transmission and it was really little and I loved it 'cause I could get it down old snowmobile paths that had dried up during the summer season, I could take it through rivers, take it up to the mountains, I would go exploring.
