  • Promoting the Spa Tourism Industry: Focus on Coastal Resorts in Kenya
Athens Journal of Tourism - Volume 1, Issue 1 – Pages 53-64 Promoting the Spa Tourism Industry: Focus on Coastal Resorts in Kenya By Roselyne N. Okech The connection between health and tourism is not a new phenomenon since people began to travel to spa towns in the 1800s and has grown substantially worldwide. Health retreats and spas are a rapidly growing sector of the tourism industry where there has been new interest in "new age" remedies and traditional remedial therapies. There is a distinct lack of published research on spa tourism issues in Kenya. Hence, the focus of such research could help identify the potential of spa tourism among domestic and international travellers, who visit Kenya and in particular Mombasa as a tourism destination. This paper aims to provide a profile of the spa resort sector in Kenya based on an in-depth analysis of promotional materials produced by each of the resorts within the population and discussions with managers of the spa resorts. The research aimed at providing a starting point for understanding the Kenyan spa resort market by establishing a preliminary profile and categorisation of the sector, particularly from a supply perspective. This research also seeks to provide some guidance for managing the prospective growth of the spa resort market and guide the marketing endeavours of existing spa resorts. Qualitative research was used to undertake an analysis of promotional materials produced by Kenyan spa resorts as well as in-depth interviews with the spa managers and direct observation. This was with the aim to establish reliable industry benchmarks for key infrastructure and generate greater awareness of the spa industry in Kenya to promote growth in visitation numbers.

Indeed, the spa is a rich repository of historical, cultural, and behavioral information that is at once unique to its specific location and shared by other spas around the world. We created Health and Wellness Tourism: A Focus on the Global Spa Industry to delve further into the definition of what constitutes a spa, and showcase different perspectives on the history and evolution of spa tourism.

  • Hotels the State of the European Hotel Spa Sector
Hotels The state of the European hotel spa sector Received: 21 April 2005 Kristin Thorsteinsdottir is a research analyst at HVS International, specialists in hotel valuation and consultancy. She joined the company in September 2004 having completed an MSc in international hotel and tourism management at Oxford Brookes University. Abstract Spas have a long tradition in Europe, where they were traditionally visited to obtain medical benefits. In recent years hoteliers have realised the various benefits that a spa facility can bring in terms of hotel revenue. This has led to a significant increase in the opening of both hotel spas and destination spas, and a number of developments are still under way. But this remains a fragmented and unregulated sector where little is known about the overall performance of spa establishments. The European spa tradition faces ever harder competition from Asian-based spa companies which have acquired a strong foothold in the European hotel spa and destination spa market. The purpose of this paper is to shed light on recent developments and the issues facing the European spa hotel sector. Keywords: hotel spa, destination spa, ISPA, industry data, spa developments INTRODUCTION Spa — the name of the Belgian town where the benefits of bathing in hot springs were first discovered — now embraces a variety of establishments and treatments that are increasingly becoming a standard feature at hotels and resorts. An interest in health and well-being, combined with an increase in disposable income, have resulted in strong demand for spas in recent years. A report recently commissioned by the US-based International SPA Association (ISPA)1 concludes that the spa industry has become a major player within the leisure and hospitality industry, keeping Kristin Thorsteinsdottir pace with, and even surpassing, other leisure activities in revenues HVS International 14 Hallam Street and weathering the challenges of a weak economy.

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health Article Challenges of Spa Tourism in Andalusia: Experts’ Proposed Solutions Rosa Anaya-Aguilar , German Gemar * and Carmen Anaya-Aguilar Department of Economics and Business Administration, University of Malaga, Campus El Ejido, s/n, 29071 Malaga, Spain; [email protected] (R.A.-A.); [email protected] (C.A.-A.) * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: Water is the common thread and attraction factor of the tourism facilities called “spas”, which are part of health and beauty services. Spa use is currently experiencing a boom that reflects changes in populations, such as an increase in economic wellbeing and a desire to reunite with nature. This research’s objectives were to understand spa tourism’s structural and operational dimensions and to assess this sector’s current situation by using the Delphi method with a panel of 22 experts. The results show that these experts believe that, in Andalusia, spas energize the area as a tourism destination through their natural resources and conservation of key elements. However, spa development policies are scarce, including a lack of autonomous community laws regarding these facilities. • Capitalizing on Emerging Tourism Trends: an Exploratory Examination of Jamaica’S Wellness Tourism Sector Within an Innovation Systems Framework
OC12106 Capitalizing on Emerging Tourism Trends: An Exploratory Examination of Jamaica’s Wellness Tourism Sector within an Innovation Systems Framework Dawn H. Pearcy, Ph.D. – Eastern Michigan University Jacquelyn Lester – Wayne State University ABSTRACT Jamaica is a Caribbean Island nation that relies heavily on tourism to generate a significant portion of its revenues. In the country’s goal of achieving developed nation status, it is currently considering a number of ways to diversify its tourism product, increase employment and contribute to the success of its economy. To that end, Jamaica endeavors to grow its wellness tourism sector, which is currently in the emerging stage. This paper examines aspects of the Jamaican wellness tourism sector within an innovation systems framework as advanced by Mattsson, et al. (2005). The motivation for exploring this framework is that Jamaica’s move from its traditional offering of “sun, sea, and sand” vacations to also include offerings that appeal to travelers seeking health and wellness experiences will require innovation in many areas including, but not limited to, planning, collaboration, implementation, and marketing. The framework explored in this study defines key components of innovation systems and key roles that can be played by various stakeholders. These include the attractor, the scene, the scene- maker, the scene-taker, and the collaborative network. This paper will explore each role with a particular emphasis on the key roles of environmental and social sustainability as well as the involvement of key stakeholders. KEYWORDS : wellness tourism, innovation systems, Jamaica, sustainability INTRODUCTION Tourism is the world’s largest industry and is experiencing a growth rate of 4-5 percent annually (Caribbean Export Development Agency [CEDA] 2008).
