Postal 2072, Balboa, Republica de Panama Abstract. Patterns of parasitism in insular avian communities can provide insight into processes that maintain host±parasite associations. On one hand, replicable relationships within evolutionarily independent communities of the same host and parasite taxa would indicate that these interactions are stable over time. On the other hand, unique ecological conditions on each island, sporadic colonizations and extinctions, plus new genetic variation would lead to island-speci®c host±parasite relationships. We examined the distribution of three parasitic taxa among avian host species on three islands in the Lesser Antilles: St. Lucia, Martinique, and Dominica. Blood protozoa of the genus Haemoproteus were found in 34% of host individuals examined. A signi®cant species effect, but no signi®cant island effect, was observed, suggesting an ecologically stable and replicable host±parasite asso- ciation. Cysts of the tissue-dwelling protozoan genus Sarcocystis were observed in 4% (9% on Dominica) of host individuals and were signi®cantly associated with ground foraging. Epithelial lesions characteristic of avian papilloma virus were recorded in 4% of host individuals on Martinique only. The pattern of infection with papilloma virus or Sarcocystis (signi®cant island effect) indicated that host species on a particular island are linked in transmission webs of these parasites. Such island-speci®c associations suggest a role for either history or unique local ecology in host±parasite associations. There was a statistically signi®cant interaction between island and species effects in the prevalence of Haemoproteus. This may stem from the independent evolution of host± parasite interactions in the different island populations. We were able to assess the extent of genetic divergence of the host species by analysis of mitochondrial ATPase 6,8 sequences. There was little genetic divergence between island populations of the host species. There- fore, the variation in Haemoproteus prevalence is not likely to be related to genetic dif- ferentiation of the host populations. Birds infected with Haemoproteus exhibited elevated leukocyte levels indicative of immunological control of the parasite. After statistically controlling for the intensity of Haemoproteus infection and host species, leukocyte levels varied signi®cantly among is- lands on which the host resided. This is consistent with the idea that insular avian com- munities are linked by transmission webs of parasites having broad host speci®city. Lowther, Field Museum Brood parasitism is an awkward term to describe an interaction between two species in which, as in predator-prey relationships, one species gains at the expense of the other. Brood parasites "prey" upon parental care. Victimized species usually have reduced breeding success, partly because of the additional cost of caring for alien eggs and young, and partly because of the behavior of brood parasites (both adults and young) which may directly and adversely affect the survival of the victim's own eggs or young. About 1% of all bird species, among 7 families, are brood parasites. The 5 species of brood parasitic “cowbirds” are currently all treated as members of the genus Molothrus. Host selection is an active process. Not all species co-occurring with brood parasites are equally likely to be selected nor are they of equal quality as hosts. Rather, to varying degrees, brood parasites are specialized for certain categories of hosts. Brood parasites may rely on a single host species to rear their young or may distribute their eggs among many species, seemingly without regard to any characteristics of potential hosts. Lists of species are not the best means to describe interactions between a brood parasitic species and its hosts. Such lists do not necessarily reflect the taxonomy used by the brood parasites themselves nor do they accurately reflect the complex interactions within bird communities (see Ortega 1998: 183-184). Host lists do, however, offer some insight into the process of host selection and do emphasize the wide variety of features than can impact on host selection.

A fun group and the most productive tour we have had to date! We observed 582 bird taxa in 17 days of birding, which beat our record last year of 555 by a bunch. As we fine-tune our birding route and learn more about Colombian birds things just seem to get better and better. This year we saw 33 endemics and loads of interesting subspecies and near-endemics. Highlights included a female Blue- billed Curassow, Kelp Gull(s) at Los Camerones (only the second time it has been recorded in Colombia), Dwarf and Pavonine cuckoos (the latter a lifer for Trevor!), a splendid Crested Owl, Sapphire- bellied Hummingbird (nice comparisons with Sapphire-throated), Double-banded Graytail in the coffee finca below Reinita Cielo Azul lodge, the always elusive Santa Marta Bush-Tyrant and antpitta, Turquoise Dacnis, and singing Yellow-bellied Siskin. It is really hard to pick just one from so many! I want to thank all of you again for a really enjoyable trip. Perhaps, the twenty minutes spent marveling at a family group of Spectacled Owls no more than 60 feet away should top the list. The pair, with their fledged young bird at their side, allowed lengthy studies and superb photographic opportunities. These owls were voted the runaway winner of the “favorite bird of the tour” competition. And yet, was it even the most memorable bird sighting of the day? On that same day, we tallied a rare “motmot slam”—four species of motmots in the same day. From the impressive Rufous Motmot dominating the Lodge feeders at dawn to the wonderful pair of Broad-billed Motmots that posed along the Las Minas Road right over our heads, to the furtive Tody Motmot that eventually allowed great scope views, and to the Lesson’s Motmot late in the day with its electric-blue crown glowing in the afternoon sun, we enjoyed incredible views of all four species. In how many locales can one tally four species of motmots in a day? And what about the thirty minutes spent watching a fruiting Ficus tree along the Las Minas Road earlier that same day? It seemed like every color in the rainbow was represented by the birds visiting the tree that morning.

Acomodations ranged from waterless basics in Celendin to luxury Spa’s in Cajamarca and a lot of good craic was had along the way. Thanks for the Noble Snipe! Tom and I, along with a fun bunch of like-minded birders, escaped the throes of winter and explored the southern reaches of Costa Rica on this Part 1 tour. Although the forecast was of persistent rain, we were treated with pleasant weather for much of this tour. It was blustery and drizzly at the high elevations of Cerro de la Muerte but it stopped long enough for us to enjoy a splendid side trip to the habitat of one of the most quintessential highland species in Costa Rica, the Resplendent Quetzal! Not only did we see several of these gaudy show-stoppers, we were treated to a bonus Ochraceous Pewee, Flame-throated Warbler, and several other high-elevation specialties. We ventured on to lunch at the beautiful Paraiso Quetzal Lodge where highland hummingbirds zoomed around us, a Wrenthrush briefly came out of hiding, an Ochraceous Wren deftly dodged through some vine tangles, and we had encounters (of the close kind) with Black-billed Nightingale-Thrush and Large-footed Finch.

B.O.C. 2015 135(1) The avifauna of El Angolo Hunting Reserve, north-west Peru: natural history notes by Javier Barrio, Diego García-Olaechea & Alexander More Received 10 December 2012; final revision accepted 17 January 2015 Summary.—The Tumbesian Endemic Bird Area (EBA) extends from north-west Ecuador to western Peru and supports many restricted-range bird species. The most important protected area in the region is the Northwest Biosphere Reserve in Peru, which includes El Angolo Hunting Reserve (AHR). We visited AHR many times between 1990 and 2012. Among bird species recorded were 41 endemic to the Tumbesian EBA and six endemic subspecies that may merit species status, while 11 are threatened and eight are Near Threatened. We present ecological or distributional data for 29 species. The Tumbesian region Endemic Bird Area (EBA) extends from Esmeraldas province, in north-west Ecuador, south to northern Lima, on the central Peruvian coast (Stattersfield et al. 1998). It covers c.130,000 km2 and supports one of the highest totals of restricted-range bird species: 55 according to Stattersfield et al. (1998), or 56 following Best & Kessler (1995), the third largest number of endemic birds at any EBA globally. Within the EBA, in extreme north-west Peru, the Northwest Biosphere Reserve (NWBR) covers more than c.200,000 ha, with at least 96% forest cover (cf. Fig 38 in Best & Kessler 1995: 113, where all solid black on the left forms part of the NWBR). This statement is still valid today (Google Earth). The NWBR covers the Cerros de Amotape massif, a 130 km-long cordillera, 25–30 km wide at elevations of 250–1,600 m, running parallel to the main Andean chain (Palacios 1994).

This year marked the third run of this tour, and I gotta say, it just keeps getting better and better! And that's as it should be, as we learn from past tours, find new sites to visit, generally learn what works and what doesn't, and tweak the itinerary accordingly. One tweak we made this year was to stop at the wonderful Bosque del Tolomuco on our first day, a stop that helped us nail down a couple of target hummingbirds, and added a few other goodies to boot. It is definitely a change we will incorporate into future runs of this trip. Things started out well on our first couple of short outings from the Bougainvillea. On the first afternoon stroll, we picked up a pair of the very local Prevost's Ground-Sparrows, while a trio of Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls were the highlight of another foray early the next morning. After a delicious breakfast, we were off for the south, on what was mainly a travel day. But what a travel day! After a quick stop near Cartago for Sedge Wrens, which performed amazingly well, we spent the rest of the morning in the highlands, birding the entrance road to Paraiso Quetzal.
