THE ART STUDENTS LEAGUE PRESENTS Faces of the League Portraits from the Permanent Collection Peggy Bacon Laurent Charcoal on paper, 16 ¾” x 13 ¾” Margaret Frances "Peggy" Bacon (b. 1895-d. 1987), an American artist specializing in illustration, painting, and writing. Born in Ridgefield, Connecticut, she began drawing as a toddler (around eighteen months), and by the age of 10 she was writing and illustrating her own books. Bacon studied at the Art Students League from 1915-1920, where her artistic talents truly blossomed under the tutelage of her teacher John Sloan. Artists Reginald Marsh and Alexander Brook (whom she would go on to marry) were part of her artistic circle during her time at the League. Bacon was famous for her humorous caricatures and ironic etchings and drawings of celebrities of the 1920s and 1930s. She both wrote and illustrated many books, and provided artworks for many other people’s publications, in addition to regularly exhibiting her drawings, paintings, prints, and pastels. In addition to her work as a graphic designer, Bacon was a highly accomplished teacher for over thirty years. Her works appeared in numerous magazine publications including Vanity Fair, Mademoiselle, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Dial, the Yale Review, and the New Yorker. Her vast output of work included etchings, lithographs, and her favorite printmaking technique, drypoint. Bacon’s illustrations have been included in more than 64 children books, including The Lionhearted Kitten. Bacon’s prints are in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art, all in New York. -

The exhibition Is presented by the Art Students League through the courtesy of the Trustees of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The pictures were selected and hung by a Committee of the League. Leading museums throughout the country have lent works to the League for this Diamond Jubilee exhibition. Included will be The Concert S,inger by Thomas Eakins from the Philadelphia Museum of Art; The_ Young Woman in White by Rbbert Henri from the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DkC»} Emma and her Children by George Bellows from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; Hogs Killing a Rattlesnake by John Steuart Curry from the Art Institute of Chicago; Otis Skinner by George Luks from the Phillips Gallery, Washington, D.C.; and Trio by Walt Kuhn from the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Paul Jenkins (1923-2012)
PAUL JENKINS (1923-2012) Paul Jenkins was an American abstract painter who lived between New York and Paris. After studying at the Art Students League, he became part of the Abstract Expressionist movement with Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock. Paul Jenkins also worked with many French artists, as well as Japanese artists in the Gutai group. BIOGRAPHY THE PAINTER PAUL JENKINS’ SUCCESS IN THE THE PAINTER PAUL JENKINS’ EARLY LIFE AND UNITED STATES ARTISTIC TRAINING Paul Jenkins’ first solo exhibition in the United States was Paul Jenkins was born on 12 July 1923 in Kansas City, held at the Zoe Dusanne Gallery in Seattle in 1955. PAUL JENKINS PAINTINGS AND WORKS ON PAPER 1984-2010 Phenomena Oracle Reckoning 2007 acrylic on canvas 240 x 377 cm 94.50 x 148.40 inches ©2018 Estate of Paul Jenkins JUNE 13 — AUGUST 4, 2018 “Independent, intuitive, technically gifted, Paul Jenkins [1923-2012] embodies many of the strengths of the New York School.” [Jonathan Goodman, Thresholds of Color, 2014] Known for his method of pouring paint onto canvas and paper and a contemporary of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell, Abstract Expressionist painter Paul Jenkins achieves luminosities and jewel-like colour in his sweeping works on primed canvas and paper. The Redfern Gallery presents an in-depth curated exhibition of works on canvas and paper from 1984—2010, including two monumental paintings, and a special selection of works in watercolour and ink on paper, many on view for the first time. The artist’s mastery of colour and form is fully evidenced in the three major-scale canvases: Phenomena When Odin Fell 1992, Phenomena Oracle Reckoning 2007 (shown above) and Phenomena Out of Sight 2010. Phenomena Oracle Reckoning and Phenomena Out of Sight, painted when the artist was 84 and 87 years of age respectively, have never been shown outside the artist’s studio and are high water marks in his prodigious achievements of the late years. The works on paper provide a selected view of the last two decades of his lifelong commitment to working in watercolour as well as in ink. Often overlooked in the body of the artist’s oeuvre with its dominance of radiant colour, the black and white works on paper provide an intimate view both in scale and in scope of this sustaining aspect of his art. -

Inscription: lower center right: Y.Kuniyoshi 23 Corcoran Collection (Gift of George Biddle) 2014.136.94 ENTRY Yasuo Kuniyoshi’s early paintings, prints, and drawings feature odd, humorous, and even disconcerting subjects: frightened-looking babies with animals and anthropomorphic vegetation, for example. [1] When he tackled more conventional motifs, such as still lifes, landscapes, or nudes, he depicted them in a quasi- surrealistic style, from dizzying perspectives, or in odd arrangements with curious props. Cows in Pasture, ostensibly a straightforward view of a coastal New England dairy farm, is a prime example of Kuniyoshi’s subtle “strangeness,” as a critic characterized the artist’s early work. [2] Kuniyoshi’s favorite early subject was the cow; the artist estimated he painted some 60 cow pictures during the mid-1920s. [3] His preoccupation with the animal and the gravity with which he treated it earned him the label of satirist, a charge he would later counter: I wasn’t trying to be funny but everyone thought I was. Robert Laurent, Edith Halpert This scene depicts the sitting room in Robert and Mimi Laurent’s Ogunquit, Maine, farmhouse. Their two sons are shown: John playing the banjo with his back to the viewer and Paul playing the accordion on the loveseat. Behind the boys are three of Robert’s treasured folk portraits, two of which are included in this exhibition. The paintings on the wall exemplify Robert’s taste for the simple, abstract, and sometimes stark lines and masses of folk painting and sculpture, while the loveseat and chair reflect Mimi’s love of curvilinear Victorian forms. The artist of Making Music, Bernard Karfiol, was a close friend of Robert Laurent’s. Brooklyn-born Karfiol had lived in Paris where he became acquainted with collectors Leo and Gertrude Stein, the American painter Samuel Halpert, and even the self-taught artist Henri Rousseau. Back in the United States, though, he did not meet with success until Hamilton Easter Field saw his work in the 1913 Armory Show and became a patron. Karfiol’s specialty was 1 painting; much of it was inspired by the Maine landscape, and he is also known for his figure paintings of children and nudes. -

It is the aim of the catalogue to give only the essential information about paintings in oil by American artists. The paintings are listed alphabeti cally by artist; measurements are given in inches, height preceding width; signatures and some inscriptions have been transcribed. All paintings acquired through December 1956 have been included. An asterisk on an entry indicates a subject received in exchange for an earlier acquisition. A detailed catalogue of American paintings, now in preparation, will be issued in due course.
