ess than two weeks from the opening session LEADING LISTS 10 Lof Keeneland's 12-day September yearling sale, bloodstock agent Donato Lanni is in preparation mode. "You try to get a good couple of days of sleep and a good meal before—it's like getting ready for a hockey game," Lanni quipped. "But, seriously, you have to be ready mentally and physically. You have to be focused and cut any non-horse activi- ties out of your life." Lanni has a reputation for buying athletes even if the pedigree happens to be unfashionable. "The catalog page tells you how much of a premium you're going to have to give," he said. "If it's a young mare or a fashionable stallion, that's all premium on top of the individual. I like Books 3, 4, and 5 best because you can find athletes in those books and don't have to give a lot of mon- ey. A lot of those horses have just come in from the fields, as opposed to the Book 1 horses that don't have one hair out of place." BH
