DOCTOR WHO AND THE CREATION OF A NON-GENDERED HERO ARCHETYPE Alessandra J. Pelusi 85 Pages December 2014 This thesis investigates the ways in which the television program Doctor Who forges a new, non-gendered, hero archetype from the amalgamation of its main characters. In order to demonstrate how this is achieved, I begin with reviewing some of the significant and relevant characters that contribute to this. I then examine the ways in which female and male characters are represented in Doctor Who, including who they are, their relationship with the Doctor, and what major narrative roles they play. I follow this with a discussion of the significance of the companion, including their status as equal to the Doctor. From there, I explore the ways in which the program utilizes existing archetypes by subverting them and disrupting the status quo.

The Doctor is the title character in the long-running BBC science fiction televisionseries Doctor Who, and has also featured in two cinema feature films and one made-for-television film, as well as a vast range of spin-off novels, audio dramas and comic strips connected to the series. Within the show, "the Doctor" is the alias assumed by a centuries-old alien who travels through space and time in hisTARDIS, frequently with companions. To date, twelve actors have headlined the series as the Doctor, with the transition from actor to actor explained within the narrative of the show through the plot deviceof "regeneration", a biological function of his race allowing them to completely change their cellular structure and appearance so as to recover from a fatal injury. Several other actors have played the character on stage and film, in audio dramas, and in occasional special episodes of the series. The character's enduring popularity led the Daily Telegraph to dub him "Britain's favourite alien".[1] The incumbent Doctor is the Twelfth Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, who took over the role from Matt Smith in the 2013 Christmas special "The Time of the Doctor". View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by NECTAR 1 The Girls Who Waited? Female Companions and Gender in Doctor Who Lorna Jowett Abstract: Science fiction has the potential to offer something new in terms of gender representation. This doesn’t mean it always delivers on this potential. Amid the hype surrounding the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, the longest running science fiction series on television, a slightly critical edge is discernable in the media coverage concerning the casting of the twelfth Doctor and issues of representation in the series. This paper examines Doctor Who in the broader context of TV drama and changes to the TV industry, analysing the series’ gender representation, especially in the 2005 reboot, and focusing largely on the female ‘companions’. Keywords: gender representation, television, feminism, BBC. When I put together an earlier version of this paper two years ago, I discovered a surprising gap in the academic study of Doctor Who around gender. Gender in science fiction has often been studied, after all, and Star Trek, another science fiction television series starting in the 1960s (original run 1966-69) and continued via spin-offs and reboots, has long been analysed in terms of gender. So why not Doctor Who? Admittedly, Doctor Who’s creators have no clear philosophy about trying to represent a more equal society, as with the utopian Trek. The lack of scholarship on gender in Doctor Who may also be part of a lack of scholarship generally on the series—academic study of it is just gaining momentum, and only started to accumulate seriously in the last five years.

From Cybermen to the TARDIS: How the Robots of Doctor Who Portray a Nuanced View of Humans and Technology GWENDELYN S. NISBETT AND NEWLY PAUL Critics and fans have praised the 2000s reboot of the science fiction classic Doctor Who for its increasing use of social commentary and politically relevant narratives. The show features the adventures of the Doctor and his companions, who have historically been humans, other aliens, and occasionally robots. They travel through time and space on a spaceship called the TARDIS (which is shaped like a 1960s British police box). The show is meant for younger audiences, but the episodes involve political and social commentary on a range of issues, such as racism, sexism, war, degradation of the environment, and colonialism. The Doctor is an alien from Gallifrey and can (and does) regenerate into new versions of the Doctor. Scholars have commented extensively about the show in the context of gender and race, political messaging, transmedia storytelling, and fandom. In this project, we examine the portrayal of robots and labor, a topic that is underexplored in relation to this show. Doctor Who makes for an interesting pop culture case study because, though the show has a huge global fan base, its heart remains in children’s programming. The series originated in 1963 on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) as a show for children that incorporates lessons related to courage, ingenuity, kindness, and other such qualities, which it continues to do to this day. Doctor Who is also interesting because the Doctor has a history of machines as companions: K-9 the GWENDELYN S.

It is located in a binary star system [2] million light years from Earth. In the revived series onwards Gallifrey was originally referred to as having been destroyed in the Time Warwhich was fought between the Time Lords and the Daleks. It was depicted in a flashback in " The Sound of Drums " [1] and appeared prominently in " The End of Time " — It is never definitively stated when the appearances of Gallifrey take place. As the planet is often reached by means of time travel, its relative present could conceivably exist almost anywhere in the Earth 's past or future as well as anywhere in the conceivable universe.
