Instead, they celebrate other events on the day. South Dakota's official holiday on this date is Native American Day while people in Berkeley, California, celebrate Indigenous People's Day. Alaska and Oregon do not recognize Columbus Day at all. Hawaii calls it Discoverers Day, which commemorates the Polynesian discoverers of Hawaii, though not as a legal holiday. The first governor to foresee the political astuteness of balancing the holiday scales was California's governor at the time, Ronald Reagan. He proposed adding a holiday in September called American Indian Day. In 1989 the South Dakota legislature unanimously passed legislation to proclaim 1990 as the “Year of Reconciliation” for Native Americans and to change Columbus Day to Native American Day. Since 1990 the second Monday in October has been celebrated as Native American Day in South Dakota. www.opednews.com HOW IS NATIVE AMERICAN DAY OBSERVED? In South Dakota people celebrate Native American Day through learning from educational resources that focus on the traditions, culture and background of Native Americans. It is a day to celebrate the heritage of Native Americans and for both native and non-native cultures to unite so the many aspects of native culture can be shared. About 9 years ago you used to see me around the Library on a regular basis. However, now I am a sub and help out when someone needs to be gone. I am a lifetime resident of Pierre. I did take a 2 year hiatus when I went to school at Northern State as it was called back then. I have worked full time for the state for more years than I care to remember, but have enjoyed my job. My husband is the Site Manager for Enviro Tech, and I have one son and daughter-in-law who have five children – 2 of which are twin boys about 1 ½ years old, and then a 7, 9 and 12 year old. As every grandparent says – they are the most special part of life. My pastimes include volunteering for the PAWS Animal Rescue Shelter, where I am on the Board of Directors. Volunteering is very rewarding when you see a dog or cat that has been rescued from a life that was not the best and goes to a new home where we know they will be loved and taken care of. You do become attached to some of them, and at times wish you could take them home with you, but reality sets in and they are adopted to another family that will love them like you do. Fortunately I have my own 4-legged rescue dog who greets me every time I come home with wiggles and a toy in his mouth. When time allows, taking a cruise to a new place is high on my list of favorite things to do or just take the camper and the ATV out to the Black Hills and spend a weekend exploring the back trails of the Hills and seeing wildlife and areas that are not seen by many. Working at the Library, I enjoy meeting and talking with the patrons that are friends as well as making new friends. The staff at the Library are great to work with and all are so helpful with questions posed to them, both from co-workers, and patrons who need help with a computer, finding a book and for those wanting to become a new library patron – they are all welcoming. The Director, Robin, has been a great addition to Rawlins Library and many nice changes have taken place in the Library during my tenure there. My favorite genre of book is a mystery or a thriller. I can’t say that I have one favorite author as there are about 10 of them I try to keep up on all their books. Coming to Rawlins is always a pleasant trip and I hope that you all enjoy it as much as I do. Happy Reading, Melita 9 10 .
