When the Body Hides the Ancestry: Phylogeny of Morphologically Modified Epizoic Earwigs Based on Molecular Evidence Petr Kocarek1*, Vaclav John2, Pavel Hulva2,3 1 Department of Biology and Ecology, Faculty of Science, University of Ostrava, Ostrava, Czech Republic, 2 Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague, Prague, Czech Republic, 3 Life Science Research Centre, Faculty of Science, University of Ostrava, Ostrava, Czech Republic Abstract Here, we present a study regarding the phylogenetic positions of two enigmatic earwig lineages whose unique phenotypic traits evolved in connection with ectoparasitic relationships with mammals. Extant earwigs (Dermaptera) have traditionally been divided into three suborders: the Hemimerina, Arixeniina, and Forficulina. While the Forficulina are typical, well-known, free-living earwigs, the Hemimerina and Arixeniina are unusual epizoic groups living on molossid bats (Arixeniina) or murid rodents (Hemimerina). The monophyly of both epizoic lineages is well established, but their relationship to the remainder of the Dermaptera is controversial because of their extremely modified morphology with paedomorphic features. We present phylogenetic analyses that include molecular data (18S and 28S ribosomal DNA and histone-3) for both Arixeniina and Hemimerina for the first time. This data set enabled us to apply a rigorous cladistics approach and to test competing hypotheses that were previously scattered in the literature. Our results demonstrate that Arixeniidae and Hemimeridae belong in the dermapteran suborder Neodermaptera, infraorder Epidermaptera, and superfamily Forficuloidea. The results support the sister group relationships of Arixeniidae+Chelisochidae and Hemimeridae+Forficulidae. This study demonstrates the potential for rapid and substantial macroevolutionary changes at the morphological level as related to adaptive evolution, in this case linked to the utilization of a novel trophic niche based on an epizoic life strategy. -

INSECTS OF MICRONESIA Dermaptera By A. BRINDLE MANCHESTER MUSEUM, THE UNIVERSITY, MANCHESTER, ENGLAND. INTRODUCTION The most recent attempt to bring together all records of Dermaptera from the Pacific area is that of Hincks (1938, Fed. Malay States Mus., J. 18: 299-318), who included all records from the Pacific area from the Bismarck Archipelago and the Solomon Islands, south to New Caledonia, Australia, and New Zealand, north to Micronesia, and eastwards to include all the islands of the Pacific ocean as far east as the Galapagos Islands. In that paper 2 species, Nesogaster aculeatus (Bormans) and Chelisoches morio (Fabricius) are recorded from Micronesia. The Dermaptera collected by Pro fessor Esaki's Micronesian Expeditions in 1936-1939 were studied by Menozzi (1941, Mushi 13:73-80), and these included a further 6 species. The only subsequent papers including records of Dermaptera from Micronesia, of which the present author is aware, are those of Rehn (1946, Acad.Nat.Sci.Philad., Proc. 98:219-239); (1949, Ent.Soc.Am.,Trans. 74:165-171); and (1949, Ent. Soc.Am.,Trans. 75:109-111). The total of species from Micronesia recorded in all these publications is 12, of which 1, Labia dubronyi Hebard, is thought to be an error. Through the kindness of Dr. J. Linsley Gressitt, the present author has had the opportunity to examine a collection of 1581 specimens of Dermaptera from Micronesia, and including specimens from the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, the Field Natural History Museum, the Pacific Science Board, and the United States National Museum. The total of species represented in the collection is 24, of which 6 are new and are described, together with 2 new subspecies. -

The species was originally described from Amami-Oshima, Nansei Islands, Japan, which is located in the Oriental Region. Its distribution in Korea was confirmed by collections from Gwangneung Forest, which is located in the middle of South Korea. This is also first record of the pantropical genus Spongovostox Burr, 1911a from the Palearctic Region. Along with Labia minor Linnaeus, 1758 and Paralabellula curvicauda (Motschulsky, 1863), which had been reported from Korea previously, notes on the species are provided. And a key, descriptions, photos, and illustrations are given for their identification. Sheffield State of Nature Report
Foreword Despite a childhood in the West Midlands and a career now based in the West Country, I’ve always had a special connection to the city of Sheffield. My father’s side of the family were all born and bred in Britain’s city of steel, you see, and I have clear recollection of countless trips up to Shiregreen to visit my Nan and Aunty. Reporting on the wildlife for The One Show and Inside Out has enabled me to travel all over the UK, but it is the filming trips up to South Yorkshire that I particularly enjoy. In essence it’s like dropping in on an old friend. An impressive statistic I recently learnt about my dad’s city is that it has more trees per person than any other urban conurbation in Europe. But to understand why this city has such green credentials you need to look beyond the trees. With an estimated two million trees Sheffield also houses or borders an impressive array of habitats in addition to the woodland, ranging from clean rivers to internationally important moorlands and urban parks to ancient hay meadows. This Sheffield State of Nature 2018 report is about marking a moment in time. In the year 2018, it’s crucial for us to know what we’ve actually got. In essence, how are our local habitats and species faring in modern Britain? Inevitably the report will be an uncomfortable read in places, as it both records the decline or even loss of certain species and charts the continued degradation or fragmentation of key habitats. -
New Data About Insects of Orders Dermaptera and Orthoptera in Lithuania

According to the Fauna Europaea database (Heller, 2013), four species of these insects have been reported from Lithuania so far. This report contains information about one new species of earwigs in Lithuania: Chelidura guentheri (Galvagni, 1994) (Forficulidae) (Fig. 1–2) and new data about Labia minor (Linnaeus, 1758) (Spongiphoridae) (Fig. 3). Moreover, new distribution data about interesting species of Orthoptera, Myrmecophilus acervorum (Panzer, 1799) (Myrmecophilidae), is presented in this report. Material and Methods The material was collected during the insect field investigation by the authors in 2018. The insects were collected using the window, Barber and light traps. Specimens were identified using the key (Kočárek et al., 2005). The material is deposited in the collection of Nature Research Centre (Vilnius, Lithuania).
