A YEAR IN PHOTOGRAPHY MAGNUM ARCHIVE A YEAR IN PHOTOGRAPHY MAGNUM ARCHIVE PRESTEL MAGNUM PHOTOS MUNICH | LONDON | NEW YORK NEW YORK | PARIS | LONDON | TOKYO In researching A Year In Photography, I took a deep dive into an elegant sea of forms. Allow yourself to navigate through visible and invisible lines. Details will be discovered by a curious eye. Let yourself be attracted by an element or a moment in time. Find a connection, subtle or obvious, iconic or enigmatic. Take this intimate and personal voyage with the photographers of Magnum. Marie-Christine Biebuyck Magnum Photos I learned photography by looking at pictures. In the mid-1990s, when I was just eighteen years old, I landed a one-year internship at the Magnum Photos offi ce in London. One of my jobs was as a fi ling clerk in the vast photo archive that fi lled most of the offi ce. Every day for 365 days I would open up envelopes returning from clients, look at the images and captions, and fi gure out which of the thousands of boxes and folders to fi le them in. By the end of my year, I felt like I intimately knew every corner of this archive spanning over fi fty years of iconic photography. I’d become familiar enough with the vastly different vision and styles of the various photographers that I could identify most images on sight. Every day brought surprises. There were decades-old images that even the most senior staff could not remember having seen before, and upon discovery were handed around the offi ce for everyone to savor.

Engraved by Francois Miller in Vienna’. RIGAS VELESTINLIS RIGAS AND KORA´S The total lack of reliable biographical information regarding the formative years of Rigas has been compensated by local legend and tradition. He was born in Velestino, Thessaly (1757?), where he received his basic education. His quest for further education took him to Constantinople (1774?) where he was introduced into Phanariot circles. He became a clerk to the noble family of Ypsilantis (1785) and later went to Walla- chia, perhaps having been admitted to Masonic circles. His contact with the Phanariot world, his time spent close to Ka- tartzis, a leading Greek proponent of the Enlightenment, and his knowledge of foreign languages, which enabled him to fol- low European intellectual developments, all served to broaden his horizons.
