@spartandaily Wednesday, May 10, 2017 A&E 3 Ice cream vendor brings sweet relief to students

BY CAROLINA IBARRA Staff Writer

As we inch our way closer to the end of the semester, the days are getting hotter. A warm breeze and the blazing sun begin to hint at the upcoming summer months. For students at San Jose State, the sound of ice cream vendors’ ringing bells could be a sign of sweet relief in the form of frozen treats. Silvia Zapien, a local ice cream vendor or “paletera,” strolls through campus to take shelter underneath the cool tree shade on hot days. Along the way, she runs into students hoping to take a treat on the go. “It’s really convenient during hot days,” said accounting sophomore Anh Tran. “When I walk out of class I can buy an ice cream and enjoy the day.” Rushing students that happen to fi nd her hiding away from the striking sun get to walk away with ice cream. “I’m just passing through here,” Zapien said. “But it’s too hot on the streets right now. My feet get tired and they start to hurt so I stop by here to take a break.” Although she enjoys interacting with local San Jose communities, working under the heat is exhausting. Zapien has only been selling ice cream since last fall, but she makes her way through the San Jose streets to fi nancially support her family. She’s originally from Colima, a coastal state in Mexico, but she lives in San Jose now. The breaks Zapien takes under the refuge of SJSU’s shady tree areas are a welcome relief from the sun and a welcome campus visit for students reminiscing about their childhood. “It’s like back in India,” said electrical engineering graduate student Shambhavi Govind. “We had a lot of ice cream sellers like this so she actually makes us feel like home.” The familiar sight of seeing an ice cream vendor stroll CAROLINA IBARRA | SPARTAN DAILY Silvia Zapien, a local ice cream vendor, heads back to downtown San Jose to sell ice cream to locals after a long day at through campus is a welcomed sight for Govind and work at San Jose State.
