A second edition was printed in 2002 with a few minor changes. Since that printing, Wichita property owners have expressed a growing interest in listing their properties in the Register of Historic Kansas Places (RHKP) and the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and many have been added. Also, a commercial area, the Warehouse and Jobbers District, was listed in 2003 and Wichita’s four historic districts were listed in the RHKP and NRHP in 2004. In this latest edition additional research was conduct- ed to ensure accuracy. The brochure is organized alphabetically by the name of the structure. The entries are also numbered to correspond with locations on the map found at the front of the brochure. An online publication of the Discover Historic Wichita brochure is updated as properties and/or his- toric districts are added to Wichita’s inventory of list- ed properties. The current version is on the Historic Preservation Office website at http://www.wichita. gov/Residents/History/. Biographical notes of relevant architects have been added to this brochure. Wichita’s periods of economic boom and bust brought these professionals to town to take advantage of building surges.

Weik (University South Carolina) Symbolic and structural violence refer to exploitative and unjust social, economic, and political practices that privilege some and impoverish others. Effects of violence can be cumulative and materialize in varied forms including hunger, poverty, sickness, and premature death, and the link between subtle forms of structural violence and overt expressions of direct violence is undeniable. Moreover, the interplay between violence and privilege has arguably become more diffuse and normative in modern historic contexts. This session explores material and archaeological evidence of violence to explain how complex modern societies are structured by violence and privilege in unexpected and naturalized ways. Papers explore physical and emblematic barriers and assaults that enforced exclusion as well as material and symbolic tactics employed both to defend and challenge structural inequalities. NOTE Confessions in an International Age: Re-Examining Admissibility Through the Lens of Foreign Interrogations Julie Tanaka Siegel* In Colorado v. Connelly the Supreme Court held that police misconduct is necessary for an inadmissible confession. Since the Connelly decision, courts and scholars have framed the admissibility of a confession in terms of whether it successfully deters future police misconduct. As a result, the admissibility of a confession turns largely on whether U.S. police acted poorly, and only after overcoming this threshold have courts considered factors pointing to the relia- bility and voluntariness of the confession. In the international context, this translates into the routine and almost mechanic admission of confessions— even when there is clear indication that the confession is coerced or unreliable.
