That’s why all our students, especially freshmen, are being asked to attend a variety of events and activities during the first six weeks of the semester. The Connection Point program continues to be an effective initiative to engage our first-semester freshman students with exciting out-of-classroom involvement activities. Fall 2018 marked the beginning of the program’s sixth year! Large numbers of upper-class students also attended many of the events. Signature programs included our annual University Convocation and President’s Picnic, Dinner and a Movie, Fraternity and Sorority Life Open House, and Night of Comedy featuring a finalist from the hit television show America’s Got Talent. More than 80 percent of our first-semester freshmen participated in the program during Fall 2018, demonstrating its continued success. Connection Point for Spring 2019 will kick off on Jan. 17 at the men’s basketball game vs. the University of Texas–San Antonio for the annual Mardi Gras game. Upcoming events include free movies, sporting events, a free concert for students, Meet-n-Greet hosted by the Student Government Association, and much more! Gholz, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2011 In recent years, the city of Detroit’s economic struggles, including its cultural expressions, have become focal points for discussing the health of the American dream. However, this discussion has rarely strayed from the use of hackneyed factory metaphors, worn-out success-and-failure stories, and an ever-narrowing cast of characters. The result is that the common sense understanding of Detroit’s musical and cultural legacy tends to end in 1972 with the departure of Motown Records from the city to Los Angeles, if not even earlier in the aftermath of the riot / uprising of 1967. In “‘Where The Mix Is Perfect’: Voices From The Post-Motown Soundscape,” I provide an oral history of Detroit’s post-Motown aural history and in the process make available a new urban imaginary for judging the city’s wellbeing.

  • Anderson East Encore
D N SACKS A CO. Anderson East Encore photo credit: Joshua Black Wilkins There are musicians who call themselves road warriors, and then there’s Anderson East. An unflinching, inimitable talent armed with a potent and husky voice, the gritty-blues and-soul-toasting singer has spent the past two years pounding the pavement in the wake of his breakout debut album, 2015’s Delilah. It was only fitting then that whatever came next for East would bleed with an intimate and urgent sense of immediacy. “We wanted to present every song as a true performance,” the musician says of the stunning and diverse 11 tracks that comprise Encore, the Alabama native’s forthcoming new album due January 12 via Low Country Sound/Elektra Records. The album’s title is derived from East’s steadfast belief: that every song on his new album must be worthy of closing out one of his notoriously epic live shows. “It was very much about trying to feel live and loose,” East says of the writing and recording of Encore as well as its genre-blurring material that blends the boundary-pushing singer’s equal-parts love of country-blues (“King For A Day”), soul (“Surrender”), pop (“All On My Mind”) and beatific balladry (“Cabinet Door”). Derived from recording sessions over the past year at Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A with his longtime producer, Dave Cobb, East’s latest LP gives credence to his billing as one of contemporary music’s most compelling young artists. Says the singer- songwriter of the sense of accomplishment that surrounds Encore: “You just know when it’s right.” 119 west 57th street, penthouse north, new york, ny 10019 t 212.741.1000 www.sacksco.com D N SACKS A CO.
