Botvinnik's Secret Games Botvinnik's Secret Games Jan Timman MikhaiL Botvinnik was the uItimate boy scout of chess - aIways prepared! Indeed, his advance preparation for his key matches was feared by the greatest. It even invoLved the radio bIaring whi Le he was pLaying training games as weLL as having nicotine-puffing opponents bLow smoke in his eyes during practice games, in order to accIimatise himseLf for the reaL thing. Of course, this was before the days of modern poLiticaL correctness when smoking in pubLic is regarded by the powers- that-be as a heinous crime and is, unLike ticking the highway cLean with your tongue, noh, generat[y banned by taw on heaIth and safety grounds. Botvinnik's training games were a wetI guarded secret onty shared by a few trusty coLteagues, such as the Grandmasters Ragozin, Averbakh and Furman. ttre Soviet state was d monument to paranoia at the best of times, but suspicion mul-tipLied when wortd titLes hinged on secrecy, and these games have Lain hidden for decades after they were pLayed. Botvinnik was Wortd Champion three times, from 1948- 1957, 1958 -1964 and 1961 -1963. His finaL championship victory against Tat in the 1961 revenge match counts as one of the highest scoring rating performances in the history of chess. It was of course based on the most meticuIous preparation, not Ieast in the psychoIogicaL sphere of seeking to find and ptay positions which were not to TaIrs taste. Grandmaster Jan Timman is one of the most popular and colounfut ptayers on the modern scene. A finatist in the FIDE-tllorLd Chess Federation-tllorLd Chess Championship in 1993, Timman has been the second dominating force in Dutch chess after worLd champion Dr Max Euwe. Here Timman presents every Botvinnik training game which could be found and subjects the most important to typicaLLy cIose anaLyticaL and exptanatory scrutiny. ISBN 1-åq3å? -l'?6 - I [[llnlililtlll.

  • The Superstar Effect: Evidence from Chess
The Queen’s Gambit: Explaining the Superstar Effect Using Evidence from Chess * Eren Bilen† Alexander Matros‡ September 24, 2021 Abstract. Superstars exist in classrooms and workplaces. Superstars can either intimidate others by making their peers put in less effort, or they can encourage others by inspiring everybody to “step up” their game. In this study, we analyze direct and indirect effects of a superstar on their peers using evidence from chess. We find that the direct superstar effect is always negative. The indirect superstar effect depends on the intensity of the superstar: if the skill gap between the superstar and the rest is small (large), there is a positive (negative) peer effect. Their names are certainly well-known in chess circles and even non-chessplayers may be aware of who they are. However only a very few people know their careers in detail and what exactly they achieved. We know about some facets of their style but in my opinion not as deeply as their chess deserves. We all know that Timman played a world championship fi nal match against Karpov – and that Portisch was a world championship candidate many times. But we still do not know about the richness of their play and the quality of their achievements in any great detail.

Komodo is a chess program that is dierent from the rest. Its search makes greater use of extensions than any other top engine, which allows Komodo to often see deeper than any other engine, even if it is displaying a slightly lower search depth. The evaluation diers from its main rivals because it represents a blend of both automated tuning and the judgment of grandmaster and computer expert Larry Kaufman. Fully automated evaluations are subject to rather large sample error, and applying some chess judgment appears to be benecial, both in results and in the reasonableness of reported evaluations.

  • Nutrition and Chess
A fish before the game? On nutrition, doping and chess Author: Karel van Delft This article is published in Dutch at the site of the Max Euwe Centrum d.d. May 16, 2010. See http://www.maxeuwe.nl/columns/voeding.html The article is a chapter of the book ‘Developing Chess Talent’. See also www.chesstalent.com Publication of this article is free if you send a copy to [email protected] and mention the site www.chesstalent.com During one of the Spartakiads, the team championships of the former Soviet Union, the Moscow chess team was served exquisite meals. An official remarked with some emphasis that these meals would make the players feel excellent, which would strongly motivate if not oblige them to perform excellently. „My wife cooks superb meals at home, and yet I cannot win all my games‟, was World Champion Vasily Smyslov‟s sharp reaction. A dietician once advised grandmaster Boris Gulko to eat carrots. Gulko did not really fancy carrots and passed over the woman‟s suggestion with the words „There‟s not enough green pigment in them‟. The physical condition of people, and therefore also of chess players, is influenced by nutrition – food as well as drink. Remarkably, there has hardly been any research into the influence of nutrition on chess performance. Why should top chess players be interested in nutrition or doping? A fish Hardly any top player in the Netherlands pays any special attention to nutrition. The same goes for the Dutch chess federation KNSB. The team of En Passant from the Dutch town of Bunschoten partake of a fried fish before each home match.

Veliky Novgorod (Russian: Вели́ кий Но́вгород, IPA: [vʲɪˈlʲikʲɪj ˈnovɡərət]), also known as Novgorod the Great, or Novgorod Veliky, or just Novgorod, is one of the most important historic cities in Russia, which serves as the administrative center of Novgorod Oblast. The population of Novgorod: 220,000. UNESCO recognized Novgorod as a World Heritage Site in 1992. Crucial were Fischer’s sensational victory in the Interzonal Tournament in Palma de Mallorca and his subsequent defeats of Mark Taimanov, Bent Larsen and Tigran Petrosian in the Candidates Matches, now half a century ago. I have analysed all 43 games from these contests and selected 17 games from the period leading up to Palma. I have also described Fischer’s uncertainty, which he only managed to overcome when he started playing in the Interzonal Tournament. In the period of eighteen months described in this book, the unstop- pable American scored 65 wins and 26 draws and suffered only four defeats. Added to this, he also achieved an incredible 40½ out of 44 score in two blitz tournaments. For the game analyses, I have used the computer program Stockfish 12. It will be noticed that Fischer didn’t play as perfectly as it was thought for a long time, but I would like to give two short comments here: 1.

As I had expected, it was a difficult task. When you’ve had a long career in chess, and played many thousands of games, there will be hundreds among them on which you can look back with satisfaction. Siegbert Tarrasch published his book Dreihundert Schachpartien in 1895, when he was 33 years old. In such a case, with so many games, the selection process is much ‘looser’. In 1998, Anatoly Karpov also published a selection of 300 games from a period of three decades. Thus, he, too, had more freedom to show all his special victories to the public. I myself published Timman’s Selected Games with Cadogan in 1995, which was brought out by New In Chess under the title Chess the Adventurous Way. It features 80 games from the period 1983-1994. Curiously, I have only included 10 games from that selection in this book. This illustrates the difficulties I experienced with my new selection.
